Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ok.2ADE/526.1.1 Message Board Post: I saw your post and thought it would be faster to send an email. Yes, I'm always interested in anything that can help me extend my line. I have found slightly more information since I posted... Thomas Dudley Thornton was born 23 Sep 1827 in Covington, Campbell County, Kentucky. He died 30 Jun 1909 in Sidney, Fremont County, Iowa. He had married Julia A. Huston 17 Mar 1852, across the river in Cincinnati, Ohio. Thomas D.'s parents were Thomas P. Thornton and Frances Hambrick. The whole family had moved to Fremont County, Iowa in 1854. Benjamin Franklin Thornton, son of Thomas and Frances, died there that year. Thomas and Frances followed him in death in 1856. All three are buried together in Sidney Cemetary. I just wish I had something prior to 1850 on Thomas P, or that atleast talked more about where he was before arriving in Covington. I do know that Frances' father, Jilson Hambrick was born in Fauquier County, Virginia; however, since Thomas married her in Covington, there is currently no evidence that the families knew each other in Virginia, though the possibility is always there. Thomas P. was born in Virginia in 1801. I have no idea how THomas P came to be in Kentucky. I don't know if he came alone, or with his parents. So far I have no idea who his parents are. From what data I do have, there are a few recurring names, which may or may not be clues. Thomas, obviously, and also Tiberius. Lillie is also recurring, as in Lillie Rae and Lillie Marie. There is also an uncanny habit of using initials instead of names. Thomas P. went by T.P., THomas D. went by T.D., my grandfather was F.O.....ect. Early on I had seen some of the data on the Virginia Thorntons, which included data going back to York, but at the time I wasn't even sure if I was attached to the Virginia Thorntons, and I have since lost that data. I would appreciate anything you could give me that deals with the Thorntons coming down from William in England, and including atleast as far down as the beginning of the 1800's. If there is nothing specific, there might atleast be leads that I can follow up, that might lead to the identities of Thomas' parents.

    1. Dora Poggemeyer
    2. Hi ! Pam, Wanted to touch base with you on your entry of Dora POGGEMEYER. You have to admit this is an uncommon name and since I also have a Dora Poggemeyer in my data base, I wonder if there is some connection here. My Dora Lee TUCKER was first married to George M. GILSON abt. 1895. George, the son of 1814 John & Edna (HUNTER) Gilson died in 1897 and Dora married Henry Poggemeyer. I see your Dora was born before my Dora and George were married, so I don't know how they would be connected. However, with this unusual surname, I wonder if you might have a knowledge of Dora Tucker and her marriages. When she was married to George Gilson, they resided in Hamburg, Fremont County, Iowa. 2. Hi ! Fran, Thank you for your response and I appreciate the effort from the 1880 census. The ones listed would be too young for my Isaac & Della Mariah. Their ages should be around 45. In any case I know they had resided in Rawlings, Kansas after 1880. Della Maria IRWIN is listed in Fremont Co. Iowa in 1880. She married Rev. Conner about 1881 and moved to Kansas. I presume Isaac Conner died and Mariah returned to Fremont County by 1900. I am not sure where Isaac Conner was in 1880, since I did not find him in Fremont County, Iowa. E. Long In last week's Reporter we gave a short account of the death of Mrs. W. E. Long, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. H. Lant of Red Oak. Funeral services were held at Red Oak Christian Church in Red Oak and burial was made in the Hamburg cemetery. The following obituary is taken from the Red Oak Express: "Mary Catherine Martin was born in Atchison county, Mo., March 10, 1869, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Martin. Her mother died when she a was very small girl, leaving her father and three children. After the father's remarriage, the three children lived with relatives and in the years following became separated to the extent that in May of this year a sister, Mrs. Eda Lee, now living in Hollywood, Calif., came to Red Oak where a reunion of the three children took place at the W. H. Lant home, Mrs. Long and her brother, George Martin, of Silver Creek, Nebr., had not seen nor did they know the whereabouts of Mrs. Lee for over fifty years. The reuniting of the two sisters and brother came about as a result of Mrs. Lee writing a letter to her long lost sister, addressed to Hamburg, in her maiden name of Mary Martin where Mrs. Lee knew they were raised as little children. "Miss Mary Catherine Martin was married at Rock Port, in 1866, to William Ellsworth Long. Mr. Long died at Hamburg, August 17, 1922. In March, 1926, Mrs. Long came to Red Oak to make her home with her daughter, Mrs. W. H. Lant. "Before coming to Red Oak, Mrs. Long had lived most of her life at Hamburg, and at Westboro, Mo., although she had lived for a time in Des Moines. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. W. H. Lant, of Red Oak; Mrs. C. E. Butler and Miss Katherine Long, of Chicago, all of whom were present at the funeral. One daughter, Jessie, died in infancy. She is also survived by her sister and brother, Mrs. Eda Lee, Hollywood, Calf., and George Martin, Silver Creek, Nebr., and a half brother and half sister, Henry Martin and Mrs. Charles Hays, living at Watson. Mrs. Long had been a member of the Christian church since a young woman and was always very active in all departments of church work."

Surnames: Wilson, Hartman(n), Mendenhall, Bartlett, Sumner, Caldwell, Gregory Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ok.2ADE/1941 Message Board Post: Since I’ve started helping people with the Freedom of Information Act info in early November, I have been virtually swamped with requests. I’ve had over 1,100 requests for it, just about 200 really, really nice responsive letters and emails in response (which is a nice surprise, most people just get the info and move on), about 350 requests for additional help via email and snail mail and another 87+ who let me know they’ve found the info they’ve been looking for with the additional help. Also, a total of 9 people sent me vile, nasty, swearing emails about how I shouldn’t be helping people like this on rootsweb. But they’re obviously a sorry lot so I don’t pay them any mind. *** So, I’m happy to report that for the $7.00 for paper, copying, staples, large envelope and postage costs, it’s well worth it! The Freedom of Information Act is a tool that is available to everyone. The request is free but it can be very confusing. You have to know where to send it, you have to have the right request form, a properly worded letter, you have to know what type of information they need to get you what you are looking for. You cannot just send in a generic "find this" request. I found a way to use FOIA in genealogy to request records that actually moves your search along. In my every day legal work I use the FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) to acquire records from all areas. I will send you the forms (both State and Federal), sample request letters, what you need to send in terms of specifics, if you have them, or if not, some suggestions on where and how to find them. I have compiled a list of each State’s statutes and codes that you will need to reformat the request form for your particular State or the State you are sending the request to. I have included some specific searching directions and examples that may help you. For those of us who have been unable to get to an out-of-town location or to afford a researcher it's great. My email contact is or genealogyprincess@hotmail.com not the email listed on this posting. Or simply follow the directions below! I will be happy to help anyone with any additional information or reformatting the forms for other states, other data requests, etc. Any other requests for help, I will send a form. I have to request $6.58 for paper, copying, staples, large envelope and postage costs. This package of information is 26+ pages (and growing) -- and I had no idea this would be responded to in such huge numbers (!!). So, if you*re interested, send $7.00 in cash or check [Kathy Lawler] to Genealogy Princess, 20757 Camden Square, #210, Lathrup Village, MI 48076 or use my Paypal address [checking] for $7.00 to kathlee13@yahoo.com or genealogyprincess@hotmail.com. Either way, don’t forget your address!! I will send you the information the very day I receive your address and funds. Lastly, additional information, new ways I can come up with to use FOIA will be sent to you free of charge and I*ll also be happy to answer any questions you may have. Lastly, I have a larger bunch of information in my "FOIA IN GENEALOGY WORKS! on Ebay. Check that out! Thanks! Kathleen Lawler
