My various notes were taken over a stretch of about 55 years, so I can only guess as to where that one came from: From the Fremont county death records that were sent to Des Moines for permanent recording...If had been from a newspaper notice, it is pretty certain that the parents would have been shown...If it were from an obituary of a parent, I'd have known who the parents were...If this death had been recorded in a cemetery book, I would not have kept it...That only leaves Des Moines.--Walter

Oct. 27, 1877.--"CRYSTAL WEDDING. Mrs. and Mrs. E. F. Thorpe. Celebrate the Fifteenth Anniversary of their Wedlock.".--Invitations during the past week had been sent out to many of the warm and personal friends of Councilman Thorp and his good lady inviting their presence at their home on the evening of the 19th of October, the occasion being the fifteenth anniversay of their union, or, as it is commonly called, their crystal wedding. The storm, which has been raging, you might say, for the past week, and been hoped would abate before the announced evening; but as the evening drew on, the clouds showed no disposition to break, and the rain came down in torrents, and so it was that an event that many had looked forward to with so much pleasure and special enjoyment, had to be dispensed with, as far as the reception was concerned, much to regret of Mr. and Mrs. Thorpe, as well as hundreds of their warn and personal friends in this city. Mr. Thorpe may well be classed among the pioneers of this county, having arrived in East Nebraska City in the year 1857, residing there until 1868, when he came to this city. In 1862, finding it was not good for man to live alone, he took to himself a partner and at once became a Benedict. His bride, nee Miss Nickolson, was the acknowledged belle of Marshaltown, Iowa, her father being one of the then prominent men of that town. Life since then, during the past fiteeen years, has been as but one continuous day of sunshine with the happy couple, no dark clouds of unhappiness or misfortune ever crossing the threshold of their happy home....

Horrible Death of Mrs. Wait. The Roof of a Dug-out Falls in and Kills Her Instantly."--The sad intelligence reached us this evening of an accident that happened near Sidney, Iowa last Friday night, and which resulted in death. The FACTS OF THE CASE as near as we can get hold of them are as follows: Last Friday night, between the hours of 8 and 9 o'clock, an honest and industrious farmer by the name of Wait, who reside some Three miles north of Sidney, was sitting in his dug-out reading his bible, his wife and youngest child lying on the bed, which was situated near the entrance, the roof of the dug-out fell in, one of the rafters that sustained the arth roof striking Mrs. Wait on the neck KILLING HER INSTANTLY. The castrophe came so sudden that it was a few moments before Mr. Wait could collect his thoughts, and relight the lamp which had been extenguised. Alas! as the flickering light commenced to throw its beams around, what a sight of desolution and death met that poor husband's gaze as his eye wandered aroung that room. There on the bed laid HIS WIFE DEAD, who but a few seconds before was alive and happy. No glimmer of light could be seen from the outside, the entrance being entrely blocked by dirt and boards. After proving to himself that his wife was beyond all earthly help, he tried to make egress out, but found it impossible, in fact he and the children were literally BURIED ALIVE and amongst the dead. With superhuman effort, strengthened by the thought of his children, he at last made a hole large enough so that one of his boys could get through and go for assistance. In about an hours busy hands were at work, and shortly the prisoners as well as the dead were receiving proper attention from kind and loving hands. Mrs. Wait leaves six little chidlren to mourn her loss.

May 7, 1896.--OBITUARY.--It is with heart-felt sorrow that we chronicle the death of Mrs. Matilda Snodgrass, which occurred Sunday morning the 3rd inst., from complication of diseases. Matilda Smith was born in Barthlomew county, Ind., January 24, 1835, and was married to N. E. Snodgrass March 27, 1856. From this union seven children were born, four of which are living. Mrs. Snodgrass united with the Christian church in 1857 and we trust lived according to the teaching of the sciptures, for the death of a christian is gain. After a funeral sermon preached by Rev. Uptegrove, the remains were laid to rest in the Grand View cemetery, near Knox. "Oh the sickel is death's emblem And the flowers on it rest! Emblem of the end of mortals, Earth to earth, and dust to dust."

It raised a few flags taht made me curious because of a possible relationship to my family. My Greatgrandmother was Lillian Barrett. She was born in Kansas in 1880. A letter from my grandmother said that her family was from the east; not specifying where that was. As well as that she and her husband George Hays were married in Sidney in 1898, and had one child in 1899, and would have been living at that time. They settled in Farragut after their marriage. I was just curious if she could have been one of the children or grand children listed in the obituary. Thanks for any help that you might have. The early part of my family is not well recorded. Thanks!!!

Actually, birth records began officially in Iowa in July 1880 and not too many of them were reported even then. The 1880 census is the next thing to look for and the 1885 and 1895 state census (if they were still in Iowa) will tell the age and what county the person was born in.
