Just a reminder--for you can find some details in postings about it here on Rootsweb by SEARCHing "Acord"-- that they were living here under Fremont's first governmental organization, which was known as Neatawah Territory, an attached portion of Buchanan county, Missouri. (Neatawah Territory was in turn a part of what was called The Nishnabotna Country, a strip of country along the Missouri river.) In 1841, Fremont county was part of Nishnabotna township, Holt county, Missouri. In 1845, Fremont county became a part of Nishnabotna township, Atchison county, Missouri. In 1849, the Atchison County Court ordered that all records pertaining to Fremont county, Iowa, should be turned over to that county.......And don't forget that the top half of Fremont county was Potawatomie Indian Country from 1837 to 1846. You can also find information about ACORD by getting on Google and typing in their SEARCH space "Jacob Acord" (keep the quotation marks for your Search). Under a posting for "Yowell", you can find pictures of all the Jacob Acord family, as well as biographical information.--W.F.

June 4, 1896. -- "In this paper will be found the announcement of Prof. D. D. Darby asking of the Republican party the nomination for the office of clerk of the district court. "Prof. Darby is a lifelong Republican, is well known to many of the citizens of Fremont county, more especially in the eastern part of the county. He is an upright honorable gentleman, refined, courteous, well educated and thoroughly competent to fill the office he asks for. "He was born Sept. 1, 1859 in Green township, Fremont county, Iowa. Early education: district school; attended Amity College in College Springs, Iowa; later graduating at the Maryville Business College, Maryville, Mo. "Spent three years in Montana during which time he did some educational work and read law in Helena. The year of '86 he entered the Western Normal College, Shenandoah, Iowa, and remained there about two years, graduating in penmanship under Prof. Kensley. The year of '92 he was principal of the penmanship department of Tarkio College, Tarkio, Mo. Since that time he has taught school principally in Fremont county." SECOND: Just before this date, during the winter term of district school at Lacy Grove which started in late 1895, D. D. Darby was employed as the teacher. Darby was retained for the spring term at Lacy Grove which ran into May 1896. While living in the neighborhood, Darby contributed a column entitled "Lacy Grove News" to the Fremont County Sun. He named a number of families in connection with his weekly reports to that paper. I have never seen a historical sketch of Lacy Grove, or a biographical listing of its residents. However, by recognizing Darby's listing as a partial roster of residents of Lacy Grove during 1895 and 1896, one may have a look at that neighborhood during these months. Each time a family name was mentioned, a note was made along with the date of the Sun issue in which it was found. Following this, from time to time I will add another posting. Each will concern one of the families which Darby mentioned in his "Lacy Grove News" column in the Sun. There appears to be about three dozen family names -- plus several district schools--which Darby included in his contributions. This will make up "Darby's List" of people and places from the Lacy Grove neighborhood as he knew it.--W.F.

"FARWELL CHILDREN INJURED IN CRASH. Car Overturns Twice on Highway Just West of Farragut".-- Out of danger following treatment with lockjaw serun, the five children of Clyde Farwell, a farmer living just west of Farragut,. were recovering at their home today from injuries received in an automobile accident, Tuesday. The five youngsters, Norma Jean, Jack, Maurice, Bob and Rex, were in a car driven by the eldest, Norma Jean, when it was struck and overturned twice at an intersection near the Stanley Hopkins farm, west of Farragut. Harold Peterson of Tabor, was driving the other vehicle. Both cars were completely wrecked. Most seriously injured were Jack whose head was cut and required several stitches, and baby Rex, whose arm was cut to the bone. Clyde Farwell is the son of J. B.Farwell of Walnut township. N.B.: This accident occurred one-fourth mile south of where we lived in Prairie township, and at the Hopkins - Story intersection on the short cut between Sidney and Farragut, as it was known then. Previously, it had been the old state highway called "South Tier"....Bill Story and his housekeeper, Katie Nicolas, had been sitting outside under a shade tree and saw the two cars collide at the intersection just east of Bill's lot. I (the "Maurice" in this account) was knocked unconscious, and had fallen onto the floor in the back seat. When I "came to", it was sometime before I was aware of all of the excitement going on around, and decided I would climb out of whereever I was, and see what was going on. "There comes another one out of that car!" was yelled by someone, as I climbed out of one of the windows on the passenger side. (The Ford was laying on its side.) "Now, will someone please check that car again and see if there are anymore kids in it?" Just how long I had been in there, I don't know, but Jack had already been taken to Dr. Baldwin's office in Riverton, I remember. Walt Matthews, who lived just north us, took me home, and had his boys carry me around in their toy wagon.--W.F.

"TRAGIC DEATH OF MRS. LEE ROSCOE SHOCKS COMMUNITY. High Mass To Be Read At St. Mary's Wednesday For Farm Woman Who Died As Result of Burns".-- Funeral services will be held tomorrow morning at 9:00 o'clock at St. Mary's church for Mrs. Lee Roscoe, prominent farm woman, whose tragic death by burning occurred Monday afternoon at 1:00 o'clock. The terrible accident took place at the farm home Monday morning at 6:00 o'clock. Both Mrs. Roscoe and her husband had gone to the washhouse to do the regular weekly laudnry, and because of trouble with the Utility meter, attached to the washing machine, Mr. Roscoe was working with it in an effort to get it started. Three weeks earlier they had been bothered with the motor and sent it in for repairs. When Mr.Roscoe started the motor it suddenly backfired, shooting a spray of gasoline between his legs and directly on to Mrs. Roscoe's clothing. She was standilng approximately seven feet away, but when the gasoline struck, her clothing ignited instantly, enveloping her in flames. Mr. Roscoe immediately rushed to his wife's aid, making heroic efforts to extinguish the fire and sustaining serious burns on his face and hands. Men at work in the yard came to the stricken couple's aid immediately, put out the fire, and brought Mrs. Roscoe to the Hand Hospital. The severity of the burns made her recovery hopeless from the outset, but fortunately, she suffered little pain after the first hour or so. Father E. A. Donahue was called to administer extreme unction shortly before she passed away. She was conscious to the end and faced death with remarkable courage. "I have never seen a more valiant spirit," Father Donahue stated, "or more heroic resignation". Mrs. Roscoe was the former Miss Blanche Shunick, eldest daughter of the late John Shunick. She was born and reared on the farm where she was killed, staying on it after her marriage to Lee Roscoe, a successful farmer and devoted husband. Five children survive their mother, Helen, John, Mildred, Harriet and Mary Catherine. The sympathy of the entire community goes to them and to their father in the loss of the mother and wife, who had bent all of her energies towards making a happy home for them. Father Donahue will read a high mass at 9:00 o'clock. Music will be furnished by the St.Mary's choir, with Miss Mary Dempsey at the organ. Interment will be made in the family lot at Rose Hill.
