"Back After Many Years".-- Pierson Smith, known to his old friends as "Ish" Smith, is back in Sidney this week for his first visit since leaving his boyhood home thirty-five years ago. He was born and raised on a farm two miles northwest of Sidney, leaving to go west when he was a young man. A few weeks ago Mr. Smith received an invitation from his oldest brother, Harley Smith, who was also a Sidney boy, and who now is captain of a passenger boat, to be his guest on a trip to England. Accepting the invitation, Mr. Smith was on his way to join his brother at Newport News when he received a message that the boat was sailing several days earlier than scheduled and he was unable to reach it in time to sail. Receiving the mesage at Council Bluffs, Mr. Smith decided to visit his boyhood home before returning to his home in Oakland, California. He has been agreeably surprised to find so many old friends are living in Sidney. Mr. Smith a retired railroad man.

Surnames: Sitton, Landrith Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ok.2ADE/4280 Message Board Post: THE FREMONT COUNTY HERALD. May 3, 1917. "JOHN H. SITTON DIED SATURDAY. Long Time Resident of Fremont County Passed Away After Brief Illness".-- John H. Sittton died at his residence four miles northwest of Sidney last Saturday at the age of 59 years 2 months and 21 days. The cause of his death was la grippe and other complications. He was sick only a short time, little more than a week, but medical science and all that his family and hosts of friends could no for him was without avail and he passed to that great bourne from which no traveler returns. John H. Sitton was born in Scott county, Illinois, February 7, 1858. He spent his boyhood and early manhood days there, excepting for a few years spent in Texas. He was married in 1881 to Mary O. Landrith. To this union were born 11 children: nine of whom -- six sons and three daughters -- survive him, as does also the wife and mother. The sons are: Jesse now living in Sidney, Nebraska; Fred of White Sulphur Springs, Montana; Ora, Ray, Albert and Donald, all living in this county. The daughters are Myrtle, Eva and Alice, all still in the home. He brought his family to Fremont county, Iowa, in 1889, and has had a continuous residence here since that time. He was the son of a Baptist minister, and leaves, besides his immediate family, two brothers -- James Sitton of Jacksonville, Illinois, and Will Sitton of Roodhouse,IIlinois. The deceased spent the last 15 or 20 years of his life in Sidney, following his trade as a baker. He was honest and industrious, and demanded the respect and confidence of all who knew him. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias Lodge and also of the Pythian Sisters, in which relation he was true and faithful to his obligations. He was quiet and unassuming in his dispositions and counted his friends by the number of his acquaintances. His motto in life was the golden rule: "All things whatsoever ye would that men should to unto you, do ye even so unto them." The funeral services were held at the Lacy Grove school house, near his home, at 3 o'clock p.m. on Monday, conducted by Rev. J. P. Thomas of the Baptist church of Sidney. The interment was in the Lacy Grove cemetery in that neighbood. The members of the Juanita lodge, Knights of Pythias, of Sidney, had charge of the funeral services. There was a large attendance of members of the lodge and of others, despite the inclement weather and the heavy roads. The school house was filled to overflowing by the friends who desired to pay their last respects to the dead. Vernon Johnson conducted the ritualistic ceremony of the order of the grave. The members of the lodge gave freely of their services during the illness of Mr. Sitton, and looked carefully after his wants and those of the family in their bereavement. It was truly a work of love and friendship, and demonstrated in most vivid manner the beautiful principles of the order. N.B.: D. D. Darby named John Sitton as a resident of Lacy Grove in 1895 - 1896. I'll soon be posting more information on his family under the SEARCH words of "Darbys Outline" on this site. After entering that SEARCH, scroll down to the Sitton family of Lacy Grove.--W.F.

Ezra Pokett, was the third of seven children born to Paul Pokett (1814) and Mary L. (Beckstead) Pokett, in Nauvoo, Hancock Co., IL on November 8, 1847. He was married twice. Ezra married his first wife, Beaulah Gear, in Iowa in 1875 who died in 1881. His second wife was Amy Townsend whom he married Nov. 1, 1885 in Lyons County, Iowa. Ezra and Amy had seven children, five of whom were still living in 1900. The children listed on that Census are: Hazel b: Dec. 10, 1888 in Iowa Cecil b: Jul 1891 in Minnesota Grace b: Apr 1893 in Minnesota Vernie b: Feb 1895 in Minnesota married Arthur Skyberg in 1917 Malissa b: Mar 1898 in Minnesota They had another child, Gladys, who probably wasn’t born when that Census was taken. Ezra was a Union soldier in the Civil War. Ezra was in the 4th Independent Battery Iowa Light Artillary; Captain Van Sant's Mounted Riflemen, Company "F", 5th Missouri State Militia Cavalry. He enlisted at Rock Port, Missouri on March 13, 1862 at the age of 15 years. That unit organized at St. Joseph, Missouri, March and April, 1862. It was attached to District of Central Missouri, Dept. of Missouri, to February, 1863. He deserted on May 13, 1863, however, these charges were afterwards removed and he was discharged on May 13, 1863. On July 9, 1863 he re-enlisted in the 4th Independent Battery Iowa Light Artillery where he served as a Private. He was given a discharge on July 14, 1865 while in confinement at Fort Jefferson, Florida. That date is when his unit mustered out. His name was spelled Pokett on the US Veterans Schedule, but the site I looked at has his name spelled Poquette. The website: http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.htm Ezra died July 29, 1931 at the Minneapolis Soldier’s Home at the age of 83 years 8 months. The Minnesota legislature authorized the establishment of the Minnesota Soldiers' Home in 1887, as a "reward to the brave and deserving." http://www.mvh.state.mn.us/historytf.html He was buried on August 1, 1931 at Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis, site id B24-10-16. On other Pokett's, I received a photo of Simon Pokett and of Myrtle Mary Pokett that one of my relatives found in her mother's things. See attached phot of Simon and Mert. I've come to a standstill tracing Paul Pokett (b 1814) back through Canada and his line to France. If anyone has any idea's on that, I could use the advice. Paul's wife Mary Beckstead has been relatively easy to trace. I have lots of stuff on other Pokett family members if anyone is interested.

"Adaline O'Laughlin" Adaline Witty was born in Adams County, Illinois, on March 17, 1848, and died at the age of 73 years, 7 months and 10 days. She came to Fremont County with her parents when five years old and settled on a farm three and one-half miles southwest (sic; probably should read "southeast") of Sidney, now owned by George Goodin. She received her education in Sidney and at the age of 15 years she united with the Baptist church. On November 27, 1864, she was married to William Harrison Wade and to this union were born eight children, five sons and three daughters. The sons have all preceded their mother to the great beyond. The three daughters are living: Mrs. Sophrona Butts of Des Moines (the "Thank You" note in the next paper is signed by Mrs. Joel Cartmill, Mrs. G. W. Daniels and Mrs. Harry Butts); Mrs. Ollie Daniels of Westboro, MIssouri; and Mrs. Melissa Cartmill of Sidney. The mother was left alone some forty years ago to struggle thru life with her children. After the death of her first husband, she was twice married, the last of which was to A. O'Laughlin. She was finally left all alone and came to the home of her daughter, Mrs. Joel Cartmill, to make her home some 22 years ago. She spent a part of four years with her son, W. J. Wade, in Nebraska City. After his death a few years ago, she stayed at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Joel Cartmill, until last Friday when it was thought advisable to place her in the hospital in Clarinda for treatment as her daughter's health finally broke down from the strain of caring for her mother. Mrs. Cartmill gave her mother the best of care until poor health forced her to abandon what she considered a duty and only gave up when forced to do so. Besides the daughters, Mrs. O'Laughlin leaves one brother, William Witty of Des Moines, one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Wade of Mehan, Oklahoma, seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren. The body of the deceased arrived here from Clarinda on November 11 and funeral services were held from the Methodist church, conducted by Rev. J.A. Howard. Interment was made in the Sidney cemetery. Relatives from a distance who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Beach of Unadilla, Nebraska, Mrs. C. W. Daniels of Westboro, Missouri and Mrs. Charles Ulmer of Coin, Iowa. ------- And of her husband, Archibald O'Laughlin: After the civil war he did not return to his wife and children; instead seems to have married a couple of other women. One was Adaline Wade.

(From Wednesday's Daily): "The Kidnapping Case".-- We alluded yesterday to a somewhat interesting and exciting examination before Justice D. C. Thomas, in regard to the forcible abduction of a boy named Joseph Farwell, about 10 years of age, from this state into Iowa. The boy was the son of the wife of Dominic Shearer, and was living in Mr. Shearer's family. About a month ago the boy's mother died--thus leaving the orphan without any guardian and without any relatives in this state, his father having died while a soldier in the Union army. The grandparents of the boy reside in Iowa, and his uncle John Sheridan, found him on our streets (and not at the Catholic school as the "Chronicle" says,) and took him home to his grandparents. When John Sheridan came to our city on Monday morning, he was arrested for kidnapping and had a preliminary examination yesterday. The boy was drawing a pension of $6.00 a month, and this seems to cut quite a figure in the whole case. After a full examination of all facts the prisoner was discharged and the boy still remains with his grandparents in Iowa.. The case was vigorously prosecuted by E. R. Richardson, Esq, and ably defended by Bierbower, Stevenson and Hayward. Constable Canada had a hand in, too, and rulled some of "the chesnuts out of the fire" for himself. (2).--THE NEBRASKA CITY NEWS. January 25, 1873.-- Joseph Fawell's grandfather, Mr. Sheridan, has been appointed his guardian by the probate Judge of Fremont county, Iowa. Family members were JOHN<1833>& wife EMMA, children Gilbert <1859>, Belle, May, John, Sant, Albert and Earl. Other son OSCAR was also living in Sidney with wife GEORGIE IRONS FURBUSH. My ancestor, LUCINDA P FURBUSH BUTTS died April 17, 1891 while living in Sidney with her Furbush relatives. She was widowed in 1880. Gilbert was also shown with Lucinda's family an IL census. Unsure of the relationship of parents (born in MA) of John and/or Lucinda. Can you help?
