September 3, 1908. "AN ANCIENT LANDMARK REMOVED".-- One of the oldest log houses in Fremont county was torn down on the Ruben Calvert farm north of Sidney last week. The house was first built by M. A. Webster, a grandfather of Webster Bros., who reside here, and on land now owned by Frank Martin. The house was sold about 40 or 46 years ago to Silas Burt, who moved it to his farm and used it a good many years as a corn crib. Mr. Burt finally sold the house to Ruben Calvert; it was then moved to the Calvert farm where it has done duty as a corn crib for a good many years. Mr. Wiliams who now occupies the Calvert farm found it necessary to tear down the old house last week while making some needed improvements, and says that most of the logs are in good condition yet. He thinks he will again rebuild it and use it for a corn crib.

September 3, 1908. -- "SAD DEATH OF L. E. McGARGILL".-- While swimming in the Nishna river about four miles north of Randolph on last Saturday, L. E. McGargill suddenly cried out for help and sunk before help could reach him. His body was found in about 12 feet of water and the physician examining his body, pronounced his death due to heart failure, no water being found in his lungs. Apparently he was dead before he sunk in the water. Together with a party of friends he had gone to the river for the purpose of fishing, and while they were preparing a lunch he went into the water to show them how deep it was. After swimming around awhile, as stated, he suddenly called for help and must have died instantly. He was the son of Edw. McGargill, and with his brother, William McGargill were the only sons of that family. He was in his 38th year; was married and is survived by his wife and five young children, who will sadly mourn the loss of a kind and indulgent husband and father. Lou McGargill was one of the kindest hearted of men and his friends are numbered by his acquaintances. He will be sadly missed in the community of his home. His funeral occurred at Imogene on Monday, August 31, and the services conducted by Rev. Father Hayes, in the St. Patrick's church in Imogene, after which interment was made in the Catholic cemtery.

C.Harris, who upon learning the nature of his errand told him that he need not go to the trouble of hunting for a minister, that the court house was well supplied with them and County Clerk Harrison or Recorder Moore could either perform the ceremony for him. The result was that the bridal party at once proceeded to the home of E.H. Harrison where Andy Marion Kearns, and Everena Wright were soon joined in the holy bonds of matrimony. Surnames: Long, Parkhurst, Knight Classification: Death Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ok.2ADE/4352 Message Board Post: THE FREMONT COUNTY SUN. July 9, 1908. "Death From A Dog Bite".-- T. R. Long, the solicitor for the Nonpareil, who was bitten by a vicious dog at the home of C. C. Knight, three miles south of Silver City, on June 18, may die as the result of blood poisioning which developed from the bite. Mr. Long came to Mercy hospital in this city immediately after the episode and although everything possible was done to check the spread of the poison the disease quickly developed and grew worse. Yesterday the man's condition was so crital that his family was notified and will arrive here this morning. Dr. Cole, who has been attending him, holds out little hope for his recovery. Mr. Long called at the house of Knight near Silver city and upon entering the yard was set upon by a dog and severely bitten on the right hand. The sight of the man being bitten by his dog the farmer laughed heartily, but offered no asssitance, according to Long's statement. LATER: Thomas R. Long who died from blood poison from the bite of a dog as stated elsewhere was the son of Benjamin F. Long residing near Bartlett. Tom, as he was called, was born and raised to early manhood in Hamburg. Several years ago the family moved on a farm near Bartlett where he resided with his parents and also carried on a farm. After becoming married he moved to Rulo, Neb., where his wife died three or four years since, leaving three small children. For three or four years he has been traveling solicitor for the Council Bluffs Nonpareil, and was engaged in that duty when he received the bite of a dog which caused his death. He was always a steady, moral and industrious boy and man. Death of such a one in the prime of life is a loss that seems hard to bear and under such circumstances is heart rendering. Less than a year since his grandfather, Rev. Parkhurst, and less than year ago his mother were buried in the cemetery in this city. The relatives have the sympat! hy of the good people of the community.--REPORTER.

This is the advice received by Postmaster Cupp from the Department officials at Washington. The Knox postoffice was established about 35 years ago and until the advent of rural free delivery was heavily patronized, being situated as it is in the heart of one of the thickly settled and most prosperous communities of the county. " 'Blind Tom' Dies in Poverty".-- New York, June 14,--"Blind Tom," the famous negro musician, marvel of three generations of playgoers, died yesterday in Hoboken, N. J., where he had been living for years in retirement and subsisting on charity. Thomas Wiggins is the name given in his burial cerificate, but the surname was one which the famous pianist adopted. He was born a slave near Columbus, Ga., about 1850. In early childhood Tom, who was born entirely blind and more than half idiotic, showed himself remarkably imitative, frequently stealing into the house of his master to reproduce on the piano music he had heard played by others. In 1861 he became so proficient on the instrument that he was taken to New York and exhibited as a phenomenon and later was widely heard in the United States and Europe. N.B.: I believe I have seen notices that "Blind Tom" had played in Fremont county. Too, I am thinking he was married either in Page or Taylor county, Iowa. Does anyone have something on him?--W.F.

"SIDNEY'S LIGHTS TURNED ON TUESDAY EVENING".-- On Tuesday December 1st occurred one of the most important events in the history of Sidney. On that day or evening rather, the long looked for electric lights were turned on and for the first time in her history, Sidney's streets were well lighted. We now have in Sidney, backed by Sidney's enterprising business men, one of the best lighting systems to be found in any town of its size in this or any other state. One that Sidney's people may well be proud of. The work, under the efficient management of Harry B. Day, has been pushed from start to finish, as fast as material could be gotten on the ground. When the building was started Mr. Day said, barring accidents he would have the plant ready for business by Dec. 1st. And though a part of the mechanism for the plant had been lost in transit and failed to arrive, Mr. Day was true to his word and turned on the lights at the time agreed on. Belated citizens will no longer be obliged to stumble along in the darkness or carry greasy foul-smelling lanterns. Sidney has come out of the darkness into the light. N.B.: The Farwell's lived ten miles east of Sidney, atop the rolling loess prairies in southeast Prairie township. During the hot, dry, 1930's, we could sit outdoors and see the Sidney lights in the evening, lighting up the skies atop the loess bluffs.--W.F.
