So, any film that you seek, should fit that description. St, Mary's Mission at The Council Bluffs was opened in 1839 and was closed by Father Hoecken in 1841. I think you need to type in a search here on Rootsweb's Fremont county site for Hoecken and for St. Mary's and thereby hopefully increase your understanding upon some of your questions. His place was about two or three miles south of present Sidney, Iowa, if you could be looking for it on present day maps, but at the time was recognized as the very northern part of Holt county, Missouri. When those Indians left for Kansas, of course its relevance faded, so Hitchcock picked up his family and moved to Sutter's Fort, California. There (at one time) was an article on this wagon train by ?Rufus? Burrows/Burroughs, a relative of Hitchcock's, which I found on Google. Try googling those pertinent names and see if it still comes up......Too, as I remember, Hitchcock's wife was Nancy Rice: That family has a family genealogy somewhere: Perhaps you could find that. The Rice's had been army officers before taking a trade with the Indians.--Walter Farwell Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I have found the Mormons have something on two rolls called "Jesuit Mission and college records, 1832-1967" that seems a better fit. *** Could this be what you refer to with regard to the Greenwood children's baptisms in 1843? Related to this, I have actually found another record, the original, of this Father Christian Hoecken from June and July 1840. In that record, written in French, it notes that he was at Fort Union in June 1840 and at Fort Clarke (sic) on 4 July 1840. On 8 July 1840 he baptised my great great grandmother. She is listed as the sister of the woman of Mr. Greenwood. The same day he baptised two of her nephews, sons of Caleb, though the ages of these two are flip-flopped and he mistakenly thought their mother was of the Gros Ventre tribe. She was, in fact, of Crow heritage, as Caleb passed this information down in the family, and the Crow tribal elders themselves noted it in correspondence from the 1950s/60s. The godfather for all three baptisms is listed as "Mr. Harvey." I do not have the next page that might tell where he went from there, but the next entry was on 16 July, and the document is in date order. I believe this Fort Clark is the one later renamed to Fort Osage on the Missouri River east of Kansas City, and I assume it would have been easy enough for Father Hoecken to get up to the area around Atchison County / Fremont County in 4 days on a boat, as it would seem from your other posts that that is where the Greenwoods most likely lived. This Father Hoecken really got around! *** Does the name Mr. Harvey ring any bells? Thanks. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. It does seem that the Mormons have filmed the court records, at least from 1841 onward. I'll check into them. As you can imagine, there are many St. Mary records out there from all over. There is one I found in the LDS holdings that is decribed as, "Catholic Church. St. Mary of Victories (St. Louis, Missouri) Church Records 1810 - 1992" This one seems to include baptisms, but only from 1844 according to the index. The ones you referenced were in 1843. Did you see these on a film made by the Mormons? Do you think this might be the film I should look at? Thanks again. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The baptismal records for The Half Breed Farms are called the St Mary Registers; and Mormons have a microfilm copy of these registers. You will have to contact them, find out the film number and order the film from them. 2. As for the County Court records for Holt County, Missouri, a person would have to go to Oregon, Missouri, and look through the county court books and various court cases. You probably could make xerox copies of what you might find, there in that office. (Perhaps the Mormons have microfilmed these court records, but I really do not know.) It has been about forty years ago that I spent time in Oregon reading their county court records. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. In one of your postings you said, "on October 14, 1843, Hoecken (yes, the same Jesuit who had baptized the children of Murphy) baptized Sallly, aged 6 months, and James, aged 3 years, children of "Greenwood and defuncta" on the same day as he baptized children of Michael Allcott and Sidney Smith. This establishes Caleb Greenwood as living in the area around present Bartlett, Iowa; it tells us that Batchicka, Caleb Greenwood's wife, had died in Fremont county during the summer of 1843." I have not seen these records, but I would very much like to. Can you point me to them or provide a scan of the page(s)? Can you also let me know what records in Holt County might exist and how I might get copies of those? I assume "defuncta" is Latin for deceased as it is similar to what it would be in Italian, correct? Yes, a son of Caleb named John married Sarah Frances Eberman in 1847 in Atchison County. I'm also trying to trace that family, as they were close friends with the Greenwoods out in California and Oregon. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
