    3. I don't have travel details, but my Irish families from County Down came quite directly to Dubuque in one or two large groups of McCARTAN, DOUGHERTY, SAVAGE and others. The Irish were used to farming in season, and mining at other times, digging shallow tunnels on their property to extract ores. I've been told that Dubuque County was a deliberate destination because of the mining. I don't know if they bought land before or after arriving. Diane Hettrick dhettrick@earthlink.net

    3. Diane, Your post interests me. I have a DOUGHERTY connection in Dubuque. A younger sister of my g-grandmother, Ann CONNOR(S) married James DOUGHERTY. Ann and her other sister, along with my g-grandmother and her husband first arrived at Baltimore. They lived there a few years, where some children were born. Then my g-grandparents traveled to Iowa by way of McGregor and lived in a small town of Frankville in Winneshiek County for awhile. My grandmother was born there. Then on down to Dubuque County a few years later. In the mean time, Ann CONNOR(S) had married James DOUGHERTY. They lived in Dubuque and had 9 Children: John Thomas born 7 SEP 1863 Washington, DC Thomas born 2 NOV 1864 Mary Ellen born 6 JAN 1868 St Louis James F. born 14 SEP 1870 Dubuque Sara Ann born 15 DEC 1872 Edward Timothy born 7 MAY 1877 Catherine born 6 JUL 1879 IA Margaret born 16 AUG 1882 William Patrick born 30 DEC 1883 The St Louis connection is also interesting as there was a brother that drowned in the Red River of the North. His wife had a daughter, Mary A., born in St Louis 9 JUL 1868. I have not found any death information, but this daughter was living with my g-grandparents in Dubuque County in 1870. I wonder if Ann went to St Louis to care for her sister. I am telling you this to shed light on the travels of our early ancestors and also to inquire if we may have a common connection with the DOUGHERTY family.
