These are the McMahon's I found in various census indexes between 1836 - 1870. I don't have any of the actual census info - but having the page # sure helps when you go through the film. Good Luck. Hello, I am new to the list and am trying to find a Daniel McMahon who is supposedly in the 1870 Census records for Dubuque Co., possibly 1 W. Dubuque Twp. or Mosalem Twp. I am interested in knowing the family members listed with him. I am also interested in knowing the listings for any Speck family members in Dubuque, also in the 1870 census. Daniel McMahon supposedly took in an Ava Speck, who was born in Iowa in 1867. She is my ggrandmother and I am trying to find out who her parents were before Daniel McMahon and his wife Catherine took her in. I would greatly appreciate anyone who might have access to the 1870 Dubuque Co. census do a lookup for either McMahon or Speck family members. Thanks in advance to anyone who may be able to find this information for me. I am trying desperately to find her parents. Sincerely, David Anderson
Have you been in contact with Sister Millie from SS Peter-Paul? She may be able to help. There is a new translation of the records from 1865 through about 1900. I too have tried to find very old records from the original church at Sherrill with no luck. Apparently the records from 1852-1865 have been lost. My great, great, great grandparents are buried there. I recently erected a stone for them based on cemetery records supplied by Sister Millie. My,g,g,g grandfather Felix Schnering was buried there in 1853. My g,g,g, grandmother Anna Maria was buried there in 1886. >From: "Kortenkamp, Daniel" <dkortenk@uwsp.edu> >Reply-To: IADUBUQU-L@rootsweb.com >To: IADUBUQU-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: [Dubuque] church records for Sherrill's Mound at Holy Trinity/St. >Mary's, Dubuque? >Date: Tue, 11 Sep 2001 11:49:33 -0500 > >Hello Dubuque rooters. > >In the latest issue of the "Dubuque County-Key City Geneealogical >Society Newsletter" there is an article about Saint Mary's Catholic >Church, Dubuque (the second Catholic church in Dubuque). I'm so proud of my Grandson I just had to tell everyone. Joshua is 13 and and 8th grader at a Salem middle school. Friday, our national day of mourning, the children were told they could wear Red, White and Blue to show support for our country. Joshua wore his Old Navy t-shirt with a large American Flag on it. Shortly after arriving in school he was sent to the Principals office for breaking the school dress code. He was told to take his flag off and put on one of the shirts they had for violators to put on. Joshua refused. His parents were called to the school. On the way to school my daughter (his mother) called a local radio station and made them aware of the problem. The out pouring of support for Joshua was outstanding. After arriving at school My daughter and son-in-law demanded to talk with Joshua first. After establishing that he was not rude, but just respectfully demanding his right to honor his country, they went to see the principal. By this time the school was already getting calls from TV, Newspapers and Radio concerning the incident. They changed their minds and Joshua was allowed to return to class with his head held high and his Flag still being worn. Joshua spent yesterday with me and proudly walked our neighborhood with our American Flag. This morning neighbors who had not had a flag out before now do. First, Thank You to all of you from so many other countries, on the lists, for your condolences on the US tragedy. Second, I'd like all Americans, as a sign of support for our country to fly our flags in front of our homes for all to see. Let's do this until the cowards are caught. The picture in Wilkie's book (p.306) is an "architect's drawing, 1890's." Perhaps the hospital was built in the 1890s. Sorry, I really don't know when it opened. Dan Daniel J. The Dubuque Hospital for the Insane and Mercy Hospital are two different institutions. The Dubuque Hospital for the Insane name was changed to St Joseph's Sanitarium, but I don't know when. St. Joseph's Sanitarium closed about 10 or 15 years ago.
From: Jeannieg731@aol.com [mailto:Jeannieg731@aol.com] Friday, September 07, 2001 11:30 AM > The Dubuque Hospital for the Insane and Mercy Hospital are > two different institutions. > The Dubuque Hospital for the Insane name was changed to St > Joseph's Sanitarium, but I don't know when. St. Joseph's Sanitarium > closed about 10 or 15 years ago. According to my 1947 Plat Book of Dubuque County, there ARE two hospitals -- "St. Joseph Mercy Hospital" and "Mercy Hospital." Both are on Asbury Rd., but "St. Joseph Mercy Hospital" is farther west and includes much more land. In this Plat Book there is no "Dubuque Hospital for the Insane" or "St. Joseph's Sanitarium" on Asbury Rd. However, as I mentioned in a previous post, there is a picture of "St. Joseph's hospital for the insane" in William Wilkie's (1987) DUBUQUE ON THE MISSISSIPPI -- the caption says the hospital was on Asbury Road, and the picture is from the 1890s. I wonder if records for St. Joseph's Sanitarium survive. Dan Daniel J.
