Hello, I am new to this list, as I just discovered there is a Sherrill, IA.! I research the Sherrill surname and am very interested in learning more about Adam & Isaac Sherrill of this area. Adam & Isaac are two given names that have been passed down for many generations in our family. My 6th great grandfather was Adam "The Pioneer" Sherrill of Sherrills Ford, North Carolina. His grandson Isaac (named for his Uncle Isaac) was my 4th great grandfather. Seems that each child in each generation as had sons named, Adam, Isaac & William! I am excited that I have found out about two more!! Thank you, Tina McCarthy
Hello, one and all . . . I've just learned what most of you probably know by now. RootsWeb had some difficulties last night. Servers were down for about 12 hours starting about 3:30 am. The problems are fixed now but the nature of it caused all messages sent to a list during this outage to have been lost. So . . . If you sent a message to any list and have not seen it appear yet, you might want to repost it. Chances are your first attempt is out there somewhere in cyberspace where it shall remain for all eternity. --- Kathleen List Admin ~~~ Kathleen's Korner ~~~ woodside.1728@home.com
Thanks to Kate Spangler, I finally received more information on the death of my great great uncle, James Treanor. Makes for interesting reading. Thought you might enjoy. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- Dubuque Iowa Newspaper, about October 8, 1864 >From Idaho. From a private letter, received in town, we are permitted to make a few extracts concerning a party of Dubuquers who went to Idaho last spring. It says: Michael Henneberry was shot by an Indian in the side, between the hip and short rib, the arrow running internally along the back bone. James Treanor, with four others, was killed by Indians near Fort Benton, while driving a team. There is 1,500 men her, one third of whom are out of employment and are going back to the States. James McNear is here drifting in a gold mine for $10 per day; also Michael Cotter. James and William Hall, and M. Dowlan, are here in good health. Game was so plenty on the route as to hinder our progress. We killed 174 head of buffalo, 4 grizzly bears, besides a number of elk, deer and antelope, and feasted on trout and salmon. The part were continually annoyed by Indians, and during several fights lost 11 of their number. The letter was dated Bannock City, and written by Mathers Cullen. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------- Letter from Joseph Treanor to sister (probably Elizabeth Treanor Loughlin): 1864 Virginia City Aug 15th/64 Dear Sister. I hope that you have not forgotten my so far as to think that I am not in existence. For I write frequently, and receive no answer. Now but do answer this letter, for it will be a consolation for I feel that I am alone. with no kind word to cheer me. now unless it is from you as my dear brother and effectionate (sic) mother are in the other world. If you desire to (my? left?) me please let me know it, that I may seek a friend to console me among the strangers. Still I would like to hear that you are all well. In my letter dated Aug 14th to Father, you will see the account of our dear brother's death. Ah! It is heart rendering to think that he died at the hands of an infernal Indian and his body not found to receive a burial as would become him, This heard ? This hard, but God wills it. and after Job we should "Not my will O Lord, but thine be done be it done unto me according to thy word" May the blessings of heaven attend us all. >From your dear brother, Joseph Trenor (spelling and punctuation as shown, including signature as Trenor

Two summers ago on a visit to Dubuque, I discovered that Loras College also had an index to the papers for obituaries, etc. The index at Loras is different than the one at the library. Also the papers on microfilm etc. are different. There is alot of overlap but if you cannot find what you are looking at one place, it is worth the trip to the other library. This is especially true of older records. It looks like the Loras library's phone number is 1-800-245-6727 This library also has different hours from the one downtown. So when you have to leave the one you can go to the other. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp

Jean, I'm in Alabama , so I can't help you at the moment, but I do try to visit the library in Dubuque when I get back there. They have many of the local newspapers on microfilm. I have not checked it out, but you might be able to get copies through interlibrary loan. If not from the Carnegie Stout Library, perhaps from the Iowa Historical Society. I'd start by checking with the library. They do have a website. http://www.dubuque.lib.ia.us/Genealogy.htm Jim ----- Original Message ----- From: Ellen Elliott <eeadv@home.com> To: <IADUBUQU-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, November 13, 2001 2:46 PM Subject: RE: [IADubuque] Death Records > My experiences: > > I now live in Virginia and haven't been back to Dubuque > in several years. My experiences: I now live in Virginia and haven't been back to Dubuque in several years. What I do is e-mail my request to the library. They send me what they can find on the names I've given and charge $3 per sheet (page 1, subsequent pages are $1). Works out very well for obits and articles. I had called the courthouse and was quoted $1 and then $3 for death/birth certs. When I sent my names and $$, I received a letter from the manager saying they wouldn't provide the information via mail (walk ins might be different?) and that I had to go through the Des Moines office. -----Original Message----- From: Nancy L. The Dubuque Public Library on 11th and Bluff, Dubuque 52001 has all the obits in an index and you can usually find cause of death in the obit and all the information on the death certificate also. I would love to hear of a cheaper way also, but the only way I know of in IA is to go to the courthouse, when they are $1. Anyone on the list know any secrets? Jean Roberson
I need to obtain death records for several ancestors, and do not see a way to get UNcertified copies. I do not need certified copies, and in my state you can get simple photocopies for less money. Thanks for the help. Linda in Ohio
Kathy, I do not believe I have written to thank you for the obits you are sending. Regarding the Lavina Lambert obit, it might be interesting if she turns out to be a sister to Katherine Lambert. So, you might send it along if it is no problem. Please let me know how much I owe you for copies, and mailing costs, and the address to mail the check to. Again, Thanks. Ruth
Ruth, Have found obits on Joseph C. Moreland (age 96) who died Wed. Nov. 30, 1960; Mrs Carrie P. Moreland (age 79) who died Wed. Oct. 20, 1943; Vivian Palmer who died Sunday, April 7, 1929; and a short one for Mrs. Catherine Meyers who died Fri, April 28, 1939. Will send. Also the only Lavina Lambert indexed is one who dies in 1939. She was 76. Died in West Union, Ia and survived by 1 sister, Mae Lambert. Is this the right one? Let me know if you want that one. Linda, Do you know where he was married? If in Dubuque there should be a marriage license application that might state some info depending on the time period. Those records are on microfilm at the library and I do have access to them. Let me know if you would like me to check. Hello to all on the list. Hope someone can help me discover the connection between Meyers and Palmer during the period from 1870 to 1910. Would be very interested in hearing from anyone related to these two who are buried in the Farley cemetery. 1. Vivian L. Palmer, 1891 - 1929 2. Grace Palmer, 1871 - 1903 How were they related to the Meyers family? How were they related to the Lambert family? Was there a marriage between William Meyers, and a Palmer? Any and all information sincerely appreciated. Ruth Jenkins RuthJenk@aol.com
Hello fellow members of the Dubuque County list. Can use your help. I am looking for information on William H. Meyers who lived in the Dubuque County area from 1855 until l894, or later. He came from Germany with his parents to Iowa sometime in 1855. William H. Meyers married Martha Hinde, daughter of William and Jane Hinde on 15 Oct. 1870. Martha died on 20 Jan. 1874, leaving William with two small children, Martha J. and George W. William H. Meyers and the two children were living with his mother, Constance Meyers at the time of the 1880 census in Vernon Township. William's father, Michael (or Christopher) Meyers must have died sometime shortly before that census. William H. Meyers married his second wife, Katie Crawford, in Farley, Iowa on 16 June 1891. It was her second marriage. Katie was the daughter of John Wesley Lambert and Lovinia Smith Lambert. They had moved to Dubuque County from New York State. She was 43 at the time of this marriage. Katie (Mrs. William) Meyers is buried near Farley, having died on 28 Apr. 1839. Any information on members of this family would be appreciated. We are very interested in exact death date, and place of burial for William H. Meyers. Thank you for your interest, and all help. Ruth Gantenbein Jenkins RuthJenk@aol.com
