Jim: Cascade and New Melleray are not that far a part. I would say there is a good chance they were related. There are not any McGovern's in the Cascade phone book. Thank You! I am sure there are probably other siblings, eg there was supposedly another brother named Martin who may have had a son named Thomas........ I will keep this info in my files, so as I uncover info, I can find it! Shelly
My Thomas was born in 1878, and died in 1911 as mentioned at the New Melleray Abbey. This McGovern line is very elusive!!! Shelly
Some more infor on the McGovern family in Jones county. Not sure if there is a connection to the New Mellory family or not. >From Volume II of History of Jones County. William McGovern, born in Ireland 1825. Jane Heery, born Ireland 1819. They arrive separately in US in 1837. Married at New York 1853. Went to Jones County 1854. William died 1900. Jane died 1906. Couple had 8 children. Two living in 1910: William and Thomas. William married Nellie Hogan, who was born at Castle Grove, Jones County, daughter of D. M & Catherine Hogan. William and Nellie had 4 children: William L. G. Mary J. Denis M. Agnes C. Hope this helps your McGovern search. Jim in Alabama
This may or may not relate to the McGovern family in Dubuque County. I find Thomas McGovern listed as the clerk for Richland township, Jones County from 1891 to 1906.Richland is the township immediately adjacent to Dubuque County. Cascade is in both counties. This listing is on page 539 of The History of Jones County, Volume I, published in Chicago by S. J. Clarke Publishing Co. Jim in Alabama
I have a Thomas McGovern that married Philomena Moes at Cascade 11 OCT 1911. Thomas was the son of William McGovern & Jane __?__ , born 15 NOV 1878. This family was living on a farm in Richland twp., Jones County per the 1920 Federal census. There are several decsendants of this family in the Cascade area. I do not know how or if this McGovern relates to the family around the New Mellory / Placid area. Hello Daniel, Thank you for the information! Adam, his father, William and Adam's sons and their families went to North Carolina from Maryland (with a short time in Virginia on the way). They forded the Catawba River and built tempory housing, a form of stockade in 1747, they built a house in 1754. The house was standing with Sherrill descendants living in it until it burned down in 1954 (date may be wrong, I'm going by memory). When the bounderies for the state of Tennessee changed some of North Carolina became apart of Tennessee, that's how my gggg grandfather came to be in TN. Then a group of them moved up thru Kentucky, some stayed there, some spread out to other Southern States. One of the groups came up to Indiana and a few of our Indiana Uncles went to Ohio and Illinois. I know that Almima Sherrill and her husband Andrew Jackson Chandler, her nephew, William Henry Sherrill and his family moved to Illinois. We are missing another branch, Isaac B Sherrill (they spell it Shirrell/Shirrel. We are also missing Jonathan "John" (married Rebecca Davis) and his brother Jeremiah "Jerry" (married to Elizabeth "Liz" Truax) Sherrill/Sherrell/ Shirrell. I'll see what I can find and will get back with you. Hello, Tina. There is a book about the history of Sherrill, Dubuque County, Iowa: Schmitt, James H. (1995). SHERRILL: THEN AND NOW. It says Adam & Isaac SHERRILL came to Galena, Illinois, around 1830 from Madonnaville, Monroe Co., Illinois. They were born in Kentucky. They then came to Dubuque County in 1833. Isaac returned to Illinois and married Ellen WALKER on 13 Aug 1847 in St. Clair County. In 1852 they moved back to Illinois. Most of this info is from notes I took from Schmitt's book when I was at the Dubuque Public Library. The marriage info is from: http://cyberdriveillinois.com/cgi-bin/archives/marriage.s There are a lot of Illinois SHERRILL weddings indexed at this site.
