    3. Hi Nita, I have a Margaret Eliza Kephart who married Moses Archer in Dubuque Co., IA in 1856. Her parents were Jacob Kephart and Jane O'Neil. She had two brothers that I know about, James and Samuel. James and Samuel were farmhands on Moses and Margaret's farm in Chickasaw Co., IA in 1860. She died in Monona Co., IA in 1915. Bet they are related to your Kephart's :-) Email me at bjarcher@worldnet.att.net Bill Archer p.s. Any Archer or Flaherty families in the Dubuque Co. book? 3. Jim, Thank you the look-ups you are doing for us. I hope this isn't becoming a burden for you. Is there a biography of ERNSDORFF or THENO in your History of Dubuque? The ERNSDORFFs had a Buggy business in Dubuque in the 1890s. They were Luxembourgers - I have Nicolas Gonner's books. Are you a descendant of a Luxembourg immigrant? Margaret

    3. Hi, I am searching for Margaret Finn's marriage date and who she married. She was born around 1834/5 in Ireland to Anthony and Margaret Finn. They came to Dubuque, Iowa in the late 1840's. She married between 1850 and 1860 in Dubuque. If you have any info, could you please get back to me. Thanks Stephanie kosmachenko@cyberlink.bc.ca

    3. Ruth, Sorry, but no RANNAL or WADDLE in the History of Dubuque County. I did find one MASSEY entry. This is Frederick I. MASSEY, page 695 He was the European manager for Massey0Harris Company of Toronto, Canada. He was born in Lockport, New York 2 May 1842, the sone of Isaac Fredrick MASSEY. In the civil war, he mustered in at Batavia, NY Company A - 105th New Your Volunteer Infantry. Then transferred to the 94th NY. He was Commissioned a 1st Lt. in the Army of the Potomac. He fought at Chancellerville and was brevetted a major-colonel. He married Miss Alleen L. LANGWORTHY of Dubuque 2 October 1866. He moved to Dubuque in 1869. He died in 1908. I did not type the entry verbatum, but will if this is of interest to you. I also checked Nicholas Gonner's Luxembourgers in the New World. I found the following index for the Luxemburger Gazette, which is available on microfilm at Loras College and I think Iowas Historical Society. Arthur MASSEY 30 December 1913 page 12 I'm sure you are aware of the settlement on the Mississippi just south of Dubuque Massey Station. I think the MASSEY family was quite prominent in Dubuque in the early years. Hope this helps. 3. Ruth, I do not have any Gantenbein biography in the History of Dubuque County. This does not mean that there may not be some mention within the various textual parts of the book. Just that there is no biography. The book is some 940 pages. If you have access to the Luxewmburger Gazette, copies on microfilm and at Loras College, I did find the following Gantenbein references in Nicholas Gonner's Luxembourgers in the New World A. 3. Stephanie, I have the History of Dubuque County, published by Goodspeed Historical Association of Chicago. No publication date, but I suspect it to be in the 1890s. Page 516 has an entry for John J. FINN. He was born in 1844 in County Galway, Ireland, son of Thomas & Sabina FINN. The FINN family came to the US in 1851. They lived awhile in Dubuque. They were living in Dubuque when the cholera epidemic hit. Mrs. FINN died of cholera. The family then moved to Jones County, Temple Hill area. Temple Hill is about 7 miles south of Cascade. Later, the father moved back to Dubuque County, Section 20 of Whitewater township. He died there in 1883. Children of Thomas & Sabina FINN were: Patrick Mary Bridget John J. Ann Catherine. If this is any connection to your FINN family, I will type in the entire entry. I know there are still FINN descendants in the Temple Hill and Cascade area. 3. Hello, would anyone have any info on this family? Mr Great Grandparents came to Dubuque, Iowa in the late 1840's from Ireland. They brought three daughters with them, Margaret, Mary and Catherine, then had Julia shortly after they arrived. If there are more children I do not know of them. Any help would deeply be appreciated, thanks. Stephanie kosmachenko@cyberlink.bc.ca

    1. [IA..Dubuque] POORHOUSE Information
    2. Poor House Lady
    3. We would like to invite you to re-visit our website, The POORHOUSE STORY (a clearinghouse for information about 19th century American poorhouses) at http://www.poorhousestory.com We just posted a link to a page with the list of poorhouse residents from the 1880 Census for DUBUQUE County. DIRECTIONS: At the homepage (link above) click on POORHOUSES BY STATE, then on IOWA on the table of states. If you will scroll down to the section on Records, you will see the entry (with a yellow NEW arrow). (NOTE: If you have visited the site recently, you may have to click on REFRESH on your browser to see the new information.) There are other pages on the site which may give you some interesting perspective on poorhouses. They are off the homepage and include: the HISTORY page and the LETTER TO GENEALOGISTS as well as FEATURED ARTICLES. There are great tips for researching poorhouse records for yourself on the RECORDS page; and you might want to subscribe to our (almost) monthly newletter (which you can do in the lower right corner of the homepage). The information on our site will only grow through the submissions of generous readers. If you would like to e-mail me ... please do so off-list because I cannot maintain subscriptions to as many lists as we post messages on. (You can use an e-mail link off one of our web pages.) We hope you enjoy the site! Thanks, Linda Crannell (aka=The Poorhouse Lady)

    3. As you probably already know, the books published by the Dubuque Society are indexes to the actual declarations held in the court house. As recently as 1998 I wrote to the court house and they sent me a certified copy of the declaration I requested. You must provide book and page. I don't recall if I enclosed a check or sent one upon receipt. Suggest you call the Clerk of District Court in Dubuque to inquire. Sorry I do not have the number at hand. 1. Re: [IA..Dubuque] Records - RESPONSE
    2. With reponse to Craig... The Declarations of Intent to Become a Citizen, DO GIVE THE AGE upon arrival, and the DO state what Country they are from... With all due respect, Craig, I have gotten the records from Dubuque in 1998, and when did the courthouse seal the records? (nice piece of info to know?) For all, you can also write to Loras College, or Des Moines to obtain these records. Much success and lets get moving on a positive note to alternative options to locate this information for all.... Respectfully, C.Ehlers Mithrus1@aol.com
