Thank you Jeannie! I appreciate the time you took to look for me. I know the Hore Murphy Funeral home was in existence in 1902 as they are mentioned in my g.g.grandfather's obituary. I grew up in Dubuque but have been gone since my marriage 24 years ago. I know that it didn't exist while I lived there and that it had gone out of business. I am hoping that their records may have gone to another funeral home or to the genealogical/historical society and that someone will know where they are. Jim, Thanks very much for the Mead/Mace info. It was who I was looking for. You are GREAT !!!!!!!! Robin Amerson
I have searched in every old Dubuque book I have ... 1877 City Directory ... History of Archdiocese of Dubuque ... History of Dubuque By Father Wilke among others and there is no mention of the Old Cathedral Cemetery anywhere ... I am sorry. To my knowledge there is no old cemetery by the Cathedral. Also I looked for Hore Murphy Funeral home and couldnt find that either (I looked for (note the spelling) HORR Murphy Funeral home also... One of Dubuque's founding fathers was a gentleman by the name of ASA HORR, he was a medical man. But there is no mention of him owning a funeral parlor. sorry I am not too much help but I tried. Hi Jim, would you happen to have a WILLIAM STAPLES or any "DORNES" listed in your book Nita
Sorry for joining this conversation late... I have the book: DUBUQUE: The Encyclopedia p. 62 The City of Dubuque map dated 1852, drawn and published by Joseph C. Jennings, indicated three graveyards within the present city limits. One of the three cemeteries was Catholic while the other two were public. The Catholic cemetery lay at the base of the bluffs behind modern Saint Raphael's Cathedral. The cemetery was bordered on the north by Third Street, the west by Outlot 723, on the south by Lots 698 and 698a, and on the east by Outlot 693. The cemetery had a width of 411 feet along Third Street and a depth of 382 feet. This cemetery was eventually closed by the bishop, and the remains and markers moved to Mount Olivet Cemetery. Mount Olivet Cemetery is in Key West and was originally called the Key West Burying Ground. For anyone interested, a little tidbit: Jackson Park previously was a city cemetery. Remains there were removed to the new city cemetery, Linwood, and the park was dedicated in 1856 and named Jackson Park in July 1857. This book is full of information about the Dubuque and surrounding areas. It was published in 1991 by the First National Bank of Dubuque and was written by Randolph W. Lyon. Hi Dick, No, I do not know for sure when Richard BAKER died. His wife, Elizabeth (Wall) Baker d. 1884 and is buried in Johns Creek Cemetery out near Cascade/Farley area. What you have certainly sounds like "my" Richard Baker. Wonder where he is buried....... there is no stone for him beside his wife. Was he living in Dodge Township, Dubuque Co. in 1900? Are you researching this family also? Thanks much for your help! Robin and Janet and others, I've had request for the following names, and was about to re[ly that I had no MACE, but notice that MEAD married a MACE. I found Henry REED, a lumber dealer that married Miss Lucy W. FREEMAN and C. A. REED, a grocer that married Miss August E. WOODWORTH. I did not find any REID, ORNSBY, or DeLORIMIER. The following are verbatum transcripts. Dubuque page 847 "H. H. Mead, dealer in groceries and provisions, 522 Julien Avenue, Dubuque; is a native of Delaware Co., Ohio, and was born in 1839; he came West to Dubuque in 1856; during the war he enlisted in Co. L, 1st L. V. C, and was in many fights and skirmishes; he was in the service three years; since the war, he has been engaged in business here. He belongs to the L. O. O. F. He married Miss Virginia Mace Sept 12, 1864; they have three children - Walter C. , Hilan H. and Leroy R. " Dubuque page 855 "Frank E. Ormsby, manufacturer of shirts, collars, and cuffs, and proprietor of the Steam Laundry, No. 890 Main street, Dubuque; is a native of Lewis Co., N. Y., and was born Feb. 10, 1857; he grew up to manhood in that State; he came to Chicago in 1876, and came to Dubuque in 1877 and established his present business, and is building up a good trade; he has the only steam laundry in Dubuque. Mr. Ormsby was united in marriage, Dec. 4, 1879 to Miss Stella Pyne, from this city." Dubuque page 805 "Prof. Januarius Higi, Principal of St. Mary's Parochial School, Dubuque; is a native of Germany, and was born Sept. 17, 1828; he grew up to manhood, and received his literary and musical education there; he engaged in teaching and continued for eight years; he emigrated to America in 1854; came to St. Louis and engaged in teaching; he also taught in Springfield, Ill., and at Peoria, Fort Wayne and Detroit; he came to Dubuque in 1871, and since then, has occupied his present position; he holds the position of organist in St. Mary's Church. In May, 1860, Prof. Higi was united in marriage to Miss Frances Mathias, a native of Germany; they have eight children, one son and seven daughters."
