    3. Thanks Jim - I don't know how long they were in operations before/after 1902. I had a note from a gentleman in Dubuque who says he remembers it as a child - about the 1920's and 1930's. Thank-you for taking the time to look up and send me the information below! 3. Karla, I checked my Bradtreets Book of Commercial Ratings, Volume 158 July 1907, published New York, The Bradstreet Company and did not find a Hore and Murphy Funeral Home. I did find a J. J. Murphy, undertaker listed. Other undertakers listed were: Frank Reinfied C. W. Walton M. M. Hoffman John P. Voelker Gregoire Bros. Dubuque Undertaking Co. 1. Re: [IA..Dubuque] Re: Hore and Murphy Funeral Home 1902
    2. Karla, I checked with the owner of the Siegert Funeral Home here in Dubuque to see if he could remember anything about the Hore Murphy Funeral Home. He told me that he did remember it. He said he thought it was located on 7th and Locust Streets, which would be right across from the old Roshek Building. He believed that it serviced a lot of Irish Catholics. He did not have any idea where the records would be from that. He suggested you try the churches or cemeteries in Dubuque. I will keep checking. Maybe I can find something else out for you. Kathy

    3. Karla, the Cathedral Cemetery was the Third Street Cemetery located on Kelly's Bluff. Just up third street behind the cathedral. There is no cemetery there today, but the bodies were not all removed from the property, a few years ago, when they were building a home on the site, remains were found and moved to Mt Olivet Cemetery. In Mt Olivet, section one there are several graves that were reenturned there after the cemetery was closed. The cemetery was closed because Bishop Loras did not want the Catholic Church to have to pay taxes on the land. He then ordered the cemetery closed. I have more information if you would like more, please let me know and e mail me pvtly at carolp@dubuque.net and i will give you more. al >From: "Karla VF Staudt" <staudt@cptelco.net> >Reply-To: IADUBUQU-L@rootsweb.com >To: IADUBUQU-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: [IA..Dubuque] Re: Hore and Murphy Funeral Home 1902 >Date: Mon, 4 Feb 2002 06:39:17 -0500 > >Thank you Jeannie! 2. Dubuque County - Key City Genealogical Society
    3. KArla, The City Cemetery or Jackson Park was closed shortly after the cholera epidemic. It is true that the bodies were moved or som of them to Linwood. If the family of the person buried had the money the body was moved. If no one paid to move the body, the city paid and the bodies were placed in the potters field at the cemetery. their is still the rumors that bodies are still there as in the third street cemetery also. The cemetery was not moved because of water problems it was moved because the city was growing and the cemetery sexton had placed bodies outside of the designated boundries. In the Globe Journal, they had an article about the building of St Patricks Church and finding graves when they were digging for the church foundation. >From: "Karla VF Staudt" <staudt@cptelco.net> >Reply-To: IADUBUQU-L@rootsweb.com >To: IADUBUQU-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: [IA..Dubuque] Re: Jackson Park Cemetery >Date: Mon, 4 Feb 2002 09:45:12 -0500 > >RE> For anyone interested, a little tidbit: Jackson Park previously was a >city > > cemetery. Karla staudt@cptelco.net "...but those memories I have will be gone all too soon, leaving this world at the same time I do... just as the memories of my grandfathers and great-grandmothers left with them, and unless they are given and passed on, it is as if those things had never been..."

    2. I hope this answers some questions about Jackson Park Cemetery. (flooding from the river would not reach the park its too far from the river... but according to the following article heavy rains were a problem) Its a bit of interesting Dubuque history. Quoted out of Dubuque the Encyclopedia by Randy Lyons. JACKSON PARK. Once Dubuque's first designated cemetery. The area now known as Jackson Park was used as a cemetery beginning with the early settlement in 1833. During a CHOLERA outbreak in 1852, demands for a new burial site led to the cemetery being condemned. In 1858 tombstones were removed. The bodies were reburied in LINWOOD CEMETERY in 1867. The first efforts to reestablish the area into a natural setting were not completely successful. Skeletons occasionally washed to the surface after heavy rains. On July 5, 1869, The Daily Times reported that thoughtless boys were allowed to play 'shinny' with leg bones pulled from piles left by William Rebman's renovation efforts at what was then called Jackson Square. The desire to improve Jackson Square led to the construction in 1877 of a music stand or pagoda in the park. .... Due to neglect, however, the pagoda only lasted twenty years before it was torn down and sold for scrap. A memorial fountain to honor Judge Benjamin Lacy was added to the park in 1813.

Remains there were removed to the new city cemetery, Linwood, and > the park was dedicated in 1856 and named Jackson Park in July 1857. > If I remember the tale correctly from my childhood - the reason the cemetery in Jackson Park was moved was due to flooding from the Mississippi causing many of the coffins and remains to float out of the ground.
