You might want to try St. DONATUS which is in Jackson County there was an awful lot of Oswald's who settled in that area. St. Catherine's which is in Dubuque County also had Oswald's as I have some of them in my tree.
Thanks so much, Kathy. There are records at St. Rafaels from some of the priests who traveled to the smaller towns and that's where I found the birth records for my G-Grandfathers 1st and 3rd child born in Iowa but for some reason there wasn't a record for the birth of the second child, Johann Oswald. I've been searching for churches North of Dubuque that might have been around in the 1840's. It's interesting that the church became St. Mathias as Mathias Oswald was my G-Grandfathers name. Thanks to those on Dubuque list and to your informative answer, I now have a new lead for a church I'd not heard about before. Betty
> Does anyone know how far back the records go for St. Martins > Church in Cascade. Also would like the address if anyone would be so kind. > The records appear to go back to 1847 at least. St. Martin's became St. Matthias In 2000 when I received copies of a few pages from a database that they have of the baptisms I had contact with the following person: Shellie Schlemme St. Matthias Secretary St. Matthias Parish Box 699 Cascade, IA 52033 The earliest record for our descendants off of the computerized list was 1847. I don't know if Mrs. Schlemme is still there but she had provided me with the following information: "We only have our baptismal records on computer. The marriage and death are still in their original books. Our records are pretty good, but take into consideration that Cascade is a town of a German Church and an Irish Church. They did not read nor write each others language. So for a lot of information, especially the mother's maiden name, it could be the same woman and her maiden name is spelled a half dozen ways. Come of the maiden names are not even close to the original maiden name, but end up being that person. Through the years, the books have become very worn and they are written in latin long hand by different priests. Some priests have very neat legible writing and others do not. I am told that the priests traveled around to many different towns on horseback and when they returned home they tried to recall all the sacraments performed during their travels, and some were forgotten or the information misplaced." There are some records on the Dubuque County web page for funerals and burials as well as obituary indexes. http://www.rootsweb.com/~iadubuqu/ The Dubuque web page has been invaluable for me. I am also especially appreciative to the late Adrian Aitchison who did most of the transcription and who had originally found obituaries and information for me on his own that led me to finding information on my McMullen family and a complete generation of McGinty's that I had no information on. I want to thank everyone that replied to my request for the address and contact information on St. Patrick's in Garryowen. Would someone be able to tell me how to contact St. Patrick Cemetery in Garryowen, Jackson County,IA. I am looking for the burial of my gggrandmother Sarah RITCHIE MCGINTY who died between 1856 and 1860 and for her son William Cornelius MCGINTY, b. 1842, baptized 1863 in St. Martin's Catholic Church Cascade. He was listed in the 1860 Census and I have not been able to find him after that date. He was listed in the baptismal records for the church with sponsors so I am assuming that it was not a last anointment. I would appreciate any help or a look-up if someone is close to the area and will be visiting the cemetery. Thank you, Kathy Stoneberg http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~kstoneberg/ourfamily.htm

Stephanie, What a coincidence that you should post your message now. I am a subscriber to the "Cascade Pioneer", which formerly had the name Cascade Pioneer and Farley Advertiser. Jus this last issue, April 17, 2002 page 3A, there is an excerpted reprint from a May 1940 article entitled "The History of Farley". I'm not going to type it all, just a few highlights. "In November 1851, Joseph G. Wilson came to Iowa from Illinois to make a house, and pushed his investigations into Taylor township. Here he found a plat of land that met his expectations and having entered it according to law, procured title from the government and became possessed of the entire territory upon which Farley is now built. ... (He built a house) This finished, he returned to Illinois where he remained until the fall of 1852 when he retraced his steps with his family and settled down to create ..Farley. ... The first marriage of residents occurred this year, (1857) but not in Farley. The contracting parties were Charles O'Connor and Miss Sabrina Wilson, who were united in matrimony at Delhi, in Delaware County. ... You can get the microfilm of the Cascade Pioneer through the Iowa State Historical Society, either at Des Moines or Iowa City. I think they are available interlibrary loan, but I'm not sure. Hello, my Gr Grandfather Joseph Wilson had a hand in building this Union Meeting House then called Farley Hall in 1863 in Farley, Iowa. It was to take the place of absense of churches. I was wondering if any old papers were kept from the meetings they had there??? If there is does anyone know where I can write to find some information? Thanks for your help. Stephanie kosmachenko@cyberlink.bc.ca
Hello, could someone please do two look ups for me???? I am looking for one obituary and one wedding announcement if they exist. 1. Obituary: Joseph Wilson, died Nov. 04,1864 near Farley, Iowa. is buried in the old Hogans' Cemetery in Farley. 2. Wedding Announcement: Alzina Wilson and Charles Corners or Connors. They were married on April 21, 1857 in Delaware Co, Iowa, but resided in Farley. As there was no one to marry them in Farley they went to Delaware Co. I am hoping that the Dubuque newspaper may have them. Thank you. Stephanie kosmachenko@cyberlink.bc.ca
Hello, would anyone have any info on this gentleman? Ira Ezekel Cribb was born in 1832 in New York state to Henry and Charity Cribb. Ira moved to Dubuque Co.Dodge township in the 1860's. There may of been one more brother that came with him. By the 1870's they moved out of state. Thanks Stephanie kosmachenko@cyberlink.bc.ca
Hi, would anyone have this gentleman on their Finn family tree? Anthony Finn was born around 1804 in Limerick Co. Ireland. He married Margaret last name unknown around 1835 in Limerick Co. Ireland. They moved to Dubuque, Iowa USA in 1848. He and his wife Margaret I believe are both buried somewhere in Dubuque. I would like to find out who his parents were and if any of his brothers and sisters came over to USA from Ireland with him and his family. If you have anything on this family I would appreciate any help. Thanks Stephanie kosmachenko@cyberlink.bc.ca
I do not have a street map with me, but recall a High Street in the 1950s, near Dodge Street, and very steep. High Bluff Street is fairly far from Dodge, and I believe it runs fairly level, that is not up a hill but "around" one. I think High and High Bluff are two different streets. -Patrick L Coleman At 07:46 PM 4/2/2002 -0500, you wrote: >I have found reference to High Street in the city of Dubuque during the >1885-1890 period. John, I have found High Bluff Street on the 1880 census - District 177. High Bluff is off Stafford Ave. It would run parallel with Lincoln Ave and ends at Ann Street. If this is the street you are looking for.
