    1. Re: [Dub'que] Immigration information
    2. Well, Dick has the correct explanation for the "PA", rather than me, but the papers I have from my ancestors show that the first document, (the Declaration) was the one which only showed their name and that they renounced their King. I have this one from my g gf, filed in Wisc.in 1898, but he never got around to filing the Naturalization, as his brothers did. The documents I have from his brothers definitely show the earlier document (1888) entitlled Declaration, and the Petition for Naturalizatioon dated 1917.

    2. Depending on how much you know about citizenskip, this may be review for you, but I believe I was told that it meant the person had filed his Declaration of Intent, or filed his "PApers". This was the first step to becoming a citizen, after which there was a waiting period, which varied from 2-5 years, at different periods.

    3. Thanks Jeannie - now I remember. Hartigs was on one corner and the Okey Dokey 'kitty corner'. I moved to Cedar Rapids when I was 25, then KY at 30, TN, VA, CT, VA, SC, VA. No wonder I can't remember Dubuque's layout. Thanks again. 2. Couler Ave and Clay St are now Central Ave. Clay Street was from 1st street to about 18th or 19th THEN it changed to Couler ave. and goes all the way to NORTH till you reach the highway. Hope that helps clear up your mystery. Are you still in Dubuque?

    3. Eagle Point WAS the name of a street, Nancy. I know it was renamed but I don't know to what. I have run across Eagle Point Avenue again and again in the census data and city directories. It states that Sacred Heart Church is on it. I grew up one street over from Xavier Hospital and went to Sacred Heart, got married there, but I can't remember the name of the street that SH faces. (The priest house was facing Windsor). Somebody wrote that they thought it was changed to Kaufmann Ave, but I don't think that is correct since Kaufmann is several blocks from Sacred Heart. I think that might have been what was originally COULER . Anyone else??? -----Original Message----- From: Nancy L. Windsor Ave crosses over Rhomberg, goes past Sacred Heart Catholic church and ends at the old Xavier Hospital running past Linwood Cemetery. I grew up on a street off of Windsor. 3. Ruth, You will see these initials on various census' regarding immigration status. Al, (alien) Pa. (petition applied [for]) and Na, (naturalized) The naturalization was a 2 step process. After a person had been here for a certain period of time, he would file his Pa. This is the one you want to obtain for it MAY contain his port of entry, date, and perhaps a residence in his birth country. Remember, I said MAY. Then, after a period of about 2 years, he could file his final, or naturalization papers Which usually only gives his name and that he renounces allegiance to the king or queen of his native country. This does not have to be done at one place. He could arrive in NY, move to Ohio, file his Pa, and then move to Iowa and file his final papers. Dick May you live to be a hundred, with an extra year to repent. 3. Michele, I have Jacob HENKEL in my database. You can read everything I have in my "Lang Family History" at my website (in my signature). Just do a "Find" for HENKEL. Thanks for the maiden name of Jacob's mother. I did not have that. Perhaps you can fill in some other blanks for me -- Where in Germany was Jacob born? When exactly did he immigrate? Where did he live before moving to Dubuque? Also, I am still trying to learn the hometowns in Germany for Mathilda LANG's LANG ancestors. Dan Daniel J.
