    1. [Dub'que] LANG-SCHEURICH; Bavaria > Jasper DuboisCo IN > Illinois > Sherrill DubuqueCo.
    2. Kortenkamp, Daniel
    3. After 12 years of research, I've had a breakthrough in tracing my LANG-SCHEURICH ancestors to their hometowns in Bavaria. Henry & Catherine [SCHEURICH] LANG settled on a farm near Sherrill, Dubuque County, about 1846. According to census records they had come from Illinois with several children (town unknown). I have many reasons to believe that they immigrated aboard the Bark Potomac, arriving Baltimore on October 18, 1836, and went immediately to Jasper, Dubois County, Indiana. Catherine SCHEURICH was born 1812, at Niedernberg (just south of Aschaffenburg), Unterfranken, Bavaria. Some other surnames associated with this migration to Jasper include GERLACH, HAAS, HARTLAUB, HOCH, HOCHGESANG, KIMMELSHUH, LECHER, PFEFFER, and SCHMIDT/SCHMITT. A later migration to Jasper, Dubois County, came from Pfaffenweiler, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Some immigrants to Jasper came from Reute, Baden. Does anyone have Dubuque connections with Jasper, Dubois County, Indiana? Connections with Niedernberg or Aschaffenburg, or Pfaffenweiler? For more info about my LANG-SCHEURICH ancestors see the "Lang Family History" at my website. It also includes other Dubuque County ancestors -- BECK, BERG, FABRICIUS, KISCH, OETH, REINFRIED, SCHIRRA, WEBER, WUNDERLE, and ZIEGLER. Dan Daniel J. 3. The Dubuque packing house was around in the 50's. I believe Armour bought it out at some point and I don't think it's around any more. A lot of my relatives worked there in the 50's and 60's but like John Deere they were put out of work. 3. Mary Lou, The meat factory you are referring to was most likely the Dubuque Pack. Among other things, they were famous for their Floure de Lei hams. They were sold and later closed most of their packing lines. At one time, they were second only to John Deere as the Dubuque employer. There was also a smaller company, Trenkles, that was primarily a sausage maker. I think your factory was most likely the Dubuque pack. jiminal ----- Original Message ----- From: <baby.lou@att.net> To: <IADUBUQU-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, July 23, 2002 2:31 PM Subject: [Dub'que] Nettie Eliza (RANNALS) MASSCEY/MASSEY > Anyone know of my G'ma Nettie Masscey/Massey? 1. [Dub'que] Altar Factory in Dubuque around 1910?
    2. Ellen Elliott Gill
    3. Over and over again, in the census, I see guys working at an 'altar factory'. They usually are described as carpenters. Does anyone know the history of this company? Did they in fact make altars? Thanks. Ellen

    1. [Dub'que] Did you read this??? And, I need a map!
    2. Ellen Elliott Gill
    3. First, thanks to Al and Doreen who responded to my question about the Y. I just read that on the corner of 9th st. 'H.L. Stout built his fine mansion about 1850. It is now (1909 part of the YMCA Institute, a gift from Mr Stout to the society some year in the nineties.' Probably most of you are familiar with Josiah Conzett's 'book' entitled, 'recollections of People and Events of Dubuque Iowa 1846-1890,' but I just discovered it on the Internet. Periodically I go to www.google.com and type in a relative's name. I'm getting desperately short of names, so I typed in the family name of Willging who married my first cousin, knowing that his family had been early settlers in Dubuque. And, I got this bonanza. (just type in Conzett and it's right there - the document is stored in geocities, but this is fastest for me to find.) Even if your relatives aren't listed in it (which may be a blessing since Mr Conzett tended to paint everyone very black or very white), you can 'flesh out' all those dry census' and city directories and start to 'see' Dubuque in those days. I was surprised at how sparsely built it was even by 1890. Perhaps, I better understand why (in my eyes, illustrious) ancestor Hugh Treanor (merchant and alderman) was not mentioned since his store was probably located in 'Dublin' Grocery store listed assist St and Main, or 1st and Harrison. Residences were 160 or 190 Julian and later 189 St Mary's (near the Cathedral). The Cathedral must have been on the edge of respectability. No mention of Kelly's Bluff, behind the Cathedral either. I had hoped some of my Vogel relatives, who cabinet makers and shoe/boot makers, would have been listed. Or Nicholas Hansen with his successful store that allowed him to have that beautiful pillared, brick mansion on Grandview Avenue. Well, I guess I just continue to hold out hoping I find someone infamous in my tree one of these days. Enjoy! Ellen

    1. [Dub'que] 434 Rush St - 1910 City Directory
    2. Ellen Elliott Gill
    3. Does anyone have a 1910 City Directory who wouldn't mind looking up who lived at 434 Rush St? In the census it looks like a George BEACHLEY 61, wife Katherine 48 (dad born in Eng, Mom in Canada), dau Katherine 15, dau Bernice 13. It sure sounds like my great aunt Katherine LOUGHLIN who I thought was married to an Allen BEACHLER/BEECHLER. Ages, children's names, places where parents were born. I have been having trouble finding any info on an Allen BEACHLER and this might explain it. Thanks! Ellen

    1. [Dub'que] YMCA - 1930 street location??
    2. Ellen Elliott Gill
    3. I'm searching, in vain, through the 1930 census looking for my father (and his parents). Herbert (Bert) VOGEL, son of Louis & Lillian They had been living on Windsor Ave next to his brother. But around that time, grandma and grandpa Vogel moved to California and dad lived at the Y. I don't remember what street the Y was on, 9th maybe??? I suppose they enumerated boarders there. Thanks. Ellen

    1. [Dub'que] LEIHLEIN / OEHLER in 1850 mortality index?
    2. Ellen Blackstone
    3. Hi! Does anyone have anything like this name in your lines? It was indexed as LEIHLEIN, but I'm thinking that it might really be my great-great-grandmother, Eve or Eva OEHLER. I've looked at the film and there is a lot of room for confusion. My Eva OEHLER did indeed die in May, 1850, of childbirth, around the age of 30.
