    2. You have probably gotten these answers a bunch of times by now, but certainly the census, although the 1840 census will not give much info. Perhaps you already have 1850. Also look for Iowa State censuses, which were in the -5 years, although maybe not each decade. (i.e., 1845, 1855). If you know what church or denomination they were, look for the church records, as they would have baptismal & marriage records. Go to the County Courthouse,, as they may have some records, if I recall from those early years. The Dubuque City Directories did not start until 1857-8, but check those out as soon as they started. Even if you do not live near Dubuque, it will be worthwhile to contact or join the Dubuque Key County Gen. Society dckcgs@hotmail.com They have a newsletter, dues are small, and they have many resources. They Carnegie-Stout Library in Dubuque has all the City Dirs., a great Obit. card file, the State censuses, and the marriage indexes, which go back at least to 1860. Good luck, Jean

    2. JAMES H WOLFE
    3. Nicholas Lucas married Katherina Momper their daughter Barbara (my G.Grandmother) was born 10 Apr 1853 in Liberty Township Dubuque Co. I am trying to when they came to Iowa and if they were in Iowa before 1846. I don't have their marriage date or place but I don't believe Barbara was the oldest child. Since there are no birth certificates what records should I be looking for?

    3. Hi, Kevin, I was wondering what your thoughts might be on this. I can find my great great uncle - who was a pow twice, once in Andersonville. John Peter Hansen/Hanson from Dubuque IA. I sent to NARA for his records (giving them both Christian names but telling him that he went by Peter) and they can not find any records. I even had his dates of enlistment and when he was released, approximate birth date, wife's name. How can that be? A documented prisoner? Thanks for any suggestions you might have. 1. [Dub'que] Bethany & Mary of the Angels Homes - Thanks & Advice Request
    2. I want to state my appreciation for each of you who replied with helpful information on the question of the Bethany & Mary of the Angels Homes. It's particularly good to receive local perspectives on these homes. Thank you Kathie, Nancy and Jim! Now I need some advice. These twins were a mystery to our family members, and we only knew that Bertha had multiple birth children, without knowing if they were twins, triplets or more than one set. It must have been an emotionally painful part of her life, not to have shared more specific information than that which was passed down. I knew her myself. She was apparently married twice, and we didn't even know that, so we had no idea what surname her children would have been born with, if they themselves even knew it. For all the family knew, they were either taken by their father, who abandoned Bertha, or she had to give them up for adoption. I would love to get the facts. So, you see why I want to approach contacting the surviving twin with caution. Not knowing her background or circumstance, I wish to handle it as appropriately as possible. I wonder if phoning or writing to Bethany first would be better than addressing a letter directly to Elaine would be more prudent. According to her twin's obit, they had been in Mary of the Angels at about age 41 in 1965. I don't have a clue why. Could be a world of reasons. She'd be almost 79 now, and I wouldn't want to shock her with a letter of introduction or write something that wouldn't be understood. I sure would like to at least send her a birthday card. Your opinions, especially if anyone has experienced something similar, are gratefully received. 3. I would write to the Bethany home. Also, many single women found it convenient to stay at Mary of the Angels in the 60s. I had cousin who worked in Dubuque and kept a room there. On weekends, she would often stay with her mother in Cascade. jiminal ----- Original Message ----- From: <KinDetective@aol.com> To: <IADUBUQU-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, September 06, 2002 7:33 PM Subject: [Dub'que] Bethany & Mary of the Angels Homes - Thanks & Advice Request > I want to state my appreciation for each of you who replied with helpful > information on the question of the Bethany & Mary of the Angels Homes. 3. Bethany Home and Mary of the Angels, My wife, her mother, and I visited Bethany home about 6 years ago when her mother was considering an assisted living home. Although she ultimately chose not you go there, from all I could tell, it is a first class place. They have a considerable number of people that are able to be out and about, some even with theri own automobiles. For others, they have regularly scheduled bus excursions, etc. As far as Mary of the Angels, I am not sure what it is now. Years ago, it was a boarding house for wome that was run by the Nuns. Many single girls stayed there. My wife even stayed ther for awhile when she was single and working in Dubuque. ----- Original Message ----- From: Nancy L.
