Sarah, Could I possibly beg you for one more? There is family folklore that my gg grandfather, Jno (John probably) THEIS made it to Dubuque with son Theodore and married a woman, possible with the last name of LINEHAN or LENEHAN (etc)? There were 2 main THEIS families in Dubuque. Mine lived around St Columbkille's and St Raphael's Cathedral. The other was concentrated more around the Sacred Heart/Holy Ghost area. If that helps. They may have been related, but I haven't found a connection yet. Thank you so much. I called and Father Otting was very generous, but requested query's in writing. He prefers not to receive phone calls about genealogy. ÜÜÜ Shelly
May I ask what the proper procedure is to inquire? Does one offer money to look up records? I've been wanting to contact them but feel awkward. Thank you. To all who asked: I have used the Archives of the Archdiocese of Dubuque on many occasions and Rev Loras Otting has been very helpful and diligent in his search. I suggest you write him a letter to: Archives of the Archdiocese of Dubuque PO Box 479 Dubuque, Iowa 52004-0479 583-556-2580 Explain what it is you need giving as many dates as possible, location of your ancestor, ex: in the City, or a small town outside of the City, or the church you think would have the records, the nationality of your ancestors and of course the names you are looking for and what kind of records you are seeking. Be sure to send a self addressed stamped envelope and a contribution is always appreciated. The amount sort of depends on what you are asking. If I only need a marriage date for one couple, I might send a check for $10.00 but if I'm looking for the baptismal records for a whole family then $25.00. You be the judge. On the Dubuque County Gen Web page you will find the dates for many of the churches. There was a German Church in existence from about 1850 to 1860 in the City. Most of those records are kept at St. Mary's (which opened in 1860) and/or St. Raphael's Cathedral and Rev. Otting will research those records for you. If you are unsure of a location but have the name of a priest, he can usually tell where that priest may have performed services in a particular time frame. Many of the priests traveled to the smaller towns or shared duties with more than one church. He even found records for me at St. Raphael's back as far as 1843. I do not suggest writing to the individual churches as they don't have the personnel to do the research and would probably just refer to Rev Otting anyway. That of course is not true of churches outside of Dubuque. We were able to get my Fathers baptismal from Holy Cross by writing to the church there because we knew that's where he was baptized and the exact date. We discovered, however, that he was baptized with a first name that no one in the family ever knew. An interesting surprise!! It's what makes genealogy so fascinating. Hi Sarah, I am searching for Otto Smith and Julia Wyatt's marriage date. One of the children was born 1903 so I assume that it would have to be between 1900 and after. they had 3 children close together and i think this child was born the first child born. If you can find it I would appreciate it. I don't suppose the parents are listed with the marriage dates? Just checking. Thanks Penny
If you could look these up, it would be great: James LOUGHLIN/LAUGHLIN to Appalonia "Bessie" JOHNSON around 1893 Katherine "Kate" LOUGHLIN/LAUGHLIN to Allen or George BEACHLER/BEECHLER around 1904 Thanks. Ellen
Yes, please and thank you, Tom and Sarah! What a kind gesture. Searching for the marriage of David Pierce SMITH and Morinda (or Marinda or Miranda) BANKSON or BANKSTON. Many possible spellings, unfortunately. (Morinda was the daughter of Col. Andrew BANKSON/BANKSTON.) It would have been about 1845-1848, I believe. Many thanks! Just could not resist your kind offer, Sarah. So, if you have the time, I would appreciate information on these marriages: Andreas Gantenbein and Anna Maria Drutchman (around 1878) Louis Stolz and Ursula Haas ( around 1879) Thank you so very much. Ruth
Sarah, how wonderful of you to help. If you would be so kind as to check for the marriage of EHLERS, Henry and BEVERSDOR, Emilie Fredericka. I have estimated their marriage date to be 1870, give or take 5 years either way. Thank you very much. Helen Kemp

Hi Tom, Thanks for the lookup. I am serarching for what you are looking for. I did see an Otto Smith some where and am relocating it. I seen Otto cause Victoria and Lawrence Schmid had a son named Otto Smith. The last name was changed in that generation. But I am sure we don't have the same Otto but I think I have seen your Otto before.
Tom, Did your Otto have at least 2 children: Berthold 'Bart' Clemens Schmid and Titus Schmid? If so, may have a connection.
