He had undergone surgery for a brain tumor at the hospital. Mathews was the son of Perlee L. and Anna Belle Ramsey Mathews and was born at New London on June 16, 1901. He was a member of the New London Presbyterian church. Mathews never married. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Belle Mathews of Mt. Pleasant, and a brother and a sister, Virgil Mathews, Oakdale, and Mrs. June G. Anderson, of Danville. Services will be held at the Elliot Chapel at 2 p.m. Saturday. Officiating will be Rev. Edward D. Byrd, pastor-elect of the New London Presbyterian church. Burial will be in Burge Cemetery.
