Donald Ross Walker, age 77 died Sept 17, 2000 at the Kingsway Arms Nursing Home in Schenectady, New York, after an extended illness. Born Dec 1, 1922 on a farm south of Morning Sun, he was the son of Ross W. Walker and Vinnie (Westfall) Walker. He attended school in Morning Sun through eighth grade, when upon the death of his father in 1936, the family moved to Burlington. In 1943 he entered the United States Maritime Service where he served until 1946. He then worked for Finch Pyrum Paper Company. In 1956 he became a police officer with the Glen Falls Police Department, where he served with distinction until 1970. He then transferred to the New York State Thruway Authority and worked as a Traffic Supervisor until his retirement in 1978. He remained active with part time work throughout most of his retirement years. Mr. Walker was united in marriage to Carol Ann O'Keefe on November 19, 1966. In addition to his wife Carol, of Schenectady, New York, survivors include his brother Ralph Walker and wife Arlene of Urbandale, Iowa; his youngest brother, Kenneth Walker and wife Carol of Terre Haute, Indiana; a brother-in-law, Marlin Miller of Burlington and five nephews, all of who have fond memories of their uncle; Craig Miller, Richard Miller, Tom Walker, Tim Walker and Mike Walker. Donald will also be missed by two special friends, Bernie and Goldie Scherer, Schenectady, N.Y. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Lela Miller. Memorial services will be held at the United Methodist Church of Morning Sun, Iowa at 11 am Nov. 4, 2000. The service will be conducted by his nephew, Rev. Tim Walker of the First Methodist church of Central City, Iowa. (Donald was the grandson of the late S.N.Walker of Morning Sun and a nephew of Marge Kimble). Not listed in the obituary are Donalds two children: Katherine and Donald Ross Jr. Katherine is married to Gary MIller and has two children: Tauja and Christopher.
Hi cousins, I'm curious since my Walker's are from Des Moines county (but my branch left Iowa around 1914)....was this Mr. Walker a descendant of Francis Alden Walker (19th century), the wealthy farmer and merchant?
