I am not related to Mrs. Nelson and have no further information. Elaine Nelson, 74, of Mediapolis, Iowa, died Tuesday, July 25, 2000 at the University of Iowa Hospital, Iowa City. Friends may call after 10 am Thursday at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Mediapolis, where the family will meet with friends from 6-8 pm. The daughter of William and Ethel Hutchcroft Trostle, she was born July 9, 1926, rural Mediapolis. She married Paul Robert Nelson on Nov.4, 1944, at Muscatine; he died Nov. 6, 1995. Elaine was a 1943 graduate of Mediapolis High School. She attended Burlington Business College. She was a homemaker and had worked for many years at the Wapello Livestock Auction. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church at Mediapolis, the White Star Lodge No 388 Order of the Eastern Star, and a former member of King's Daughters. She had volunteered at the Great River Medical Center at West Burlington and also had volunteered for the RSVP. She was a former EMT for the Mediapolis Community Ambulance Service. She was honored as the Mediapolis Citizen of the Year in 1985. Elaine enjoyed her family, church, traveling, and was especially known for her homemade apple pies for birthdays. Survivors include four daughters, Vicky Rechkemmer of Mediapolis, Janice and Wes Zimmerman, Mary and Russ Smith, and Linda and Scott Jones, all of Burlington; three sons, Robert and Dale Nelson and Thomas and Darla Nelson, both of Mediapolis, and James and Cheryl Nelson of Sperry; 15 grandchildren, Dr. Lisa Rechkemmer, Dough Rechkemmer, Ryan Zimmerman, Haley and Nick Smith, Chad and Amy Reel, Tyler and Nathan Jones, Josh, Cody, Lauren, Adam, Brittany, and Brenna Nelson; and a brother, Maurice "Shorty" Trostle of Brenham, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Paul Robert; and a brother, Dale Trostle. The funeral service for Elaine Nelson will be held at 11 am Friday, July 28, at the First United Methodist Church at Mediapolis, with the Rev. John Caulke officiating. Music will be provided by Korkee Carruthers as the organist and Cody Nelson will present a special vocal selection. Burial will follow at the Kossuth Cemetery. The casket bearers will include grandsons, Dough Rechkemmer, Ryan Zimmerman, Nick Smith, Chad Reel, Tyler Jones, Nathan Jones, Josh Nelson, Cody Nelson and Adam Nelson. The honorary bearers will include Robert Gerling, John Hinson, Tim Hutchcroft, Jerry Strause, Paul Kuntz and Jeff Kerr. A Memorial Fund has been established for the benefit of the First United Methodist Church and the MEdiapolis Volunteer Fire Department.
