I am hoping to coinnect with anyone having GRAHAMs or MARTINs from Burlington. The 1856 census lists a household composed of John and Giles Martin, in their 40s, Mary Martin, age 18, and John and Robert Graham, in their 20s (don't have the census in front of me). The Martins were born in Scotland and the Grahams in NY. I believe this Mary Martin was the one who married Thomas C. Clark in 1857 in Burlington. Their first son, Horace, was born in Burlington in 1858. Thomas C. Clark may have been a relative of James Clarke, third territorial governor of Iowa and founder/editor of the Burlington Gazette. Any information would be welcomed. Happy New Year to all, Barbara Archer
Hello All, Sorry for the trouble, but some kook sabotaged my e-mail subscriptions to the Rootsweb.com mailing lists. I can still receive postings to my USER683614@AOL.COM box, or here. I also have about a dozen screen names with two other Internet providers, so if those of you who I am helping will e-mail me privately, I'll give them to you. I hope this problem will resolve itself. Hello to the Great State of Iowa, I am searching for any information anyone can provide me with regard to the surname TARRANT and FEDEREN. Both families lived in various parts of the state, but spent quite a bit of time in the Minneapolis area. I am searching for PHILIP FEDEREN (1883) and his wife EDITH FEDEREN (1884) and their two children FABIOLA TARRANT (1897) and CECILE TARRANT (1893). They were last known to be in the Twin Cities area in 1944, but their descendants could be anywhere by now. They were relatives of GEORGE A. SHANNON AND ISABELLA (McDonald) SHANNON of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, and their son ROBERT D. SHANNON, who was last known around 1942-44 to be living in Spencer, Iowa. Robert's wife was named JESSE and his children were ANNABELLE and GEORGE, also of Chippewa Falls, WI. Any information regarding these families or their descendants would be greatly appreciated. A number of folks who have seen my webpages on the 1852 and 1853 Iowa to Oregon wagon trains have asked for advice on how to research their overland ancestors. To that end, I've just put up a new page on my website that gives some of that advice. I hope you find it useful. Sandy Wilbur http://pweb.netcom.com/~symbios/overland.html
Leslie Saint asked for information on Henry and Des Moines County people who went to the California Gold Rush in 1849. I've only begun to work seriously on this subject, so this is just a preliminary report. There were at least two groups that went west that year. (1) The "Mt. Pleasant Mining Company" trip left from Mt. Pleasant in early April 1849. Some of the party took most of their supplies by riverboat down the Mississippi and then up the Missouri River to St. Joseph, where they met the rest of the party. They crossed the Missouri about May 1. There were 15 wagons, 42 men, l woman and a child on this trip. There are two accounts that I have seen: (a) The journal of P. C. Tiffany (manuscript in the Beinecke Library, Yale University, New Haven, CT) - Tiffany gives these names for people who were on the trip: S. BLACK, John P. GRANTHAM, HERMAN, HIGGINS, Jasper HILL, L. S.HUTTON, LUSK, MOORE, PRESLY, RICE, RUCHE, RUCKER, and P. C. TIFFANY. (b) Jasper Hill's letters (published by D. Nunis 1964 as "The letters of a young gold miner, covering the adventures of Jasper S. Hill during the California Gold Rush 1849-1852) - Hill gives a list of the people on the trip; but unfortunately I don't have it in my files. The only name I have is of the one woman, Mrs. LOTSPEICH who had her son with her. (2) "Captain Ikenberry's" Company - Actually, the leader was Samuel Eikenbary/Eikenbery, who lived near Danville, Des Moines County, Iowa. His party consisted of 23 ox teams and about 65 men. They crossed the Missouri River at St. Joseph on April 20. The names from this trip that I've so far confirmed are: William DEARDORFF, Samuel EIKENBARY, Edward FORD, J. KELLEY, Peter KESSLER, (maybe) John D. LOVE, Asa McCULLY, David McCULLY, Samuel MILLER, __ MORROW, William PATTON, D. REDDING, William SCOTT, Amos STARKEY, John L. STARKEY, Samuel STARKEY, Charles W. WASHBURN, John Morrison WATERS, and William WATERS. I have some information on the Eikenbary company names, if anyone is interested. I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who can tell me anything about the people named, or anyone else you know who was on the trip. Sandy Wilbur http://pweb.netcom.com/~symbios/geneal.html Leslie W.
