    2. --WebTV-Mail-26047-143 Content-Type: Text/Plain; Charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7Bit Thank you, Tina! I was beginning to wonder if for some reason or other Carter Cemetery had been named something else. The answer that i got back from different people, out there, was mostly, that they had never heard of it, and to top it all off, i had lost my directions to it. My wife's gg grandparents and other family members are buried there, under a monument with the name "RITCHEY" on it. I have a snap shot of the monument. 1. [IADESMOI] Lydia Fleenor
    2. Hi Searching for information regarding Lydia (Fleenor) Fleenor, born ca 1792 in VA to Casper and Margaretha Andtes Fleenor. Married her first cousin Isaac Fleenor ca 1808 in VA. Children were Joel Thompson May Ann Hiram John William Robert Elizabeth (from who I descend) She married David L. Portlock Isaac died 26 Jul 1841 in Des Moines Co and is buried in Gallaher Cem (no stone). After that date I do not know what happened to Lydia. Did she remarry? I have found in several places the death date of 22 Dec 1893. Places range from VA to IN to IA. Being that all of her children were in Iowa IA makes the most sense. But did she really die at age 101? and if so where? No one I have spoken to has been able to give me a source for this date. I have also found where some people have confused another Lydia Fleenor with my Lydia Fleenor. If so did they also give one the wrong death date. Any help on this little mystery would be greatly appreciated. I would love to find where my Lydia is buried. At present they are waiting for state funds before they can precede (you know how that goes!) You can visit the SAPIC web site at the following link: http://sapic.org The SAPIC has identified 48 pioneer cemeteries in Des Moines Co. and each has been evaluated as to its preservation needs. Time really takes its toll on headstones and many cemeteries are simply overgrown with grass, bushes and trees. Maybe I'll volunteer next year when I go up to Burlington for a working vacation (and to visit Granny). 1. [IADESMOI] A success story!
    2. Tina McGarry
    3. Greetings! About a month ago I posted the following web site to our list: http://headstonehunter.com Three weeks later a woman, Nancy, contacted me and said that she lived in southern Louise county (just north of DMC) and would be happy to find my ancestor's headstone and take a picture. Two days later she sent pictures via email of my ggg-grandparents headstones and the old St. John's German Lutheran Church in Benton Twp. Was I ever thrilled! (I live in Texas folks :o) She was so nice. The cemetery is at the end of a dirt/gravel country road out in the country. What's more, she offered to go back if I wasn't satisfied with the results. I wholeheartedly encourage everyone to visit the site and leave a request - you have nothing to lose. Additionally, volunteer if you can to take a picture in a cemetery near you for another family researcher. Anyone need pictures from Fort Bend County, Texas? Happy Hunting! Tina list manager

Anyway, on the 1920 census Thomas and Lydia were in Burlington and the parents of Nellie, born about 1907, Louise, born about 1909, and Kenneth, born about 1912. Thomas owned a Hardware store. This family is part of a large descendancy project. Any help is much appreciated. Elizabeth Richardson, Ketchikan, Alaska erich@ktn.net

    1. [IADESMOI] List Admin - occupations
    2. Tina McGarry
    3. Hi listers, Sometimes when we're going thought the census records, reading obits or old newspaper accounts we come across occupations of our forbearers that we have never seen before. Some of these occupations are now called by another name. What is a Nimgimmer? a doctor! An actuary? - man who kept public accounts of business Others occupations no longer exist because they have been replaced by technology. What did a batt maker do? - made the wadding used for quilts and mattress making An archil maker? - made violet dye from lichens used in the textile industry You might need help interpreting an occupation at some point and I recommend keeping the following site handy: http://cpcug.org/user/jlacombe/terms.html Happy Hunting! 1. [IADESMOI] Cemetery Preservation Month
    2. Tina McGarry
    3. Good afternoon all, I apologize for the prior 2 empty messages sent to the list. I've have a little email trouble the last 24 hours. Hope to get it all straightened out soon! The State Association For The Preservation Of Iowa Cemeteries has a new web site up: http://sapic.org You'll find the associations mission, definition of a pioneer cemetery, laws protecting pioneer cemeteries, current projects, membership, interesting pictures and good links. The Des Moines County Commission will soon continue work at Carter Cemetery in Danville Twp and Porter Cemetery in Union Township. Cemeteries are a part of our national, state, local and family heritage. For genealogists they can confirm information from other sources, add information and sometimes are the only record left of our ancestors. The ravages of time, vegetative growth, land-use and vandalism take their toll on gravesites. I commend the formation of this commission and the hard work of the people who volunteer to preserve these cemeteries. The following site is also full of helpful links: http://www.potifos.com/cemeteries.html This free service tries to link people wanting pictures of their ancestors headstones with people willing to go out there and take the pictures. http://headstonehunter.com I'll keep you posted!
