My name is Nancy Albritton and I'm looking for any information on the Kalbs in Iowa - middle 1800's to the turn of the century. I had a Great, Great Grandmother, Elizabeth Wolfe Kalb who was committed to a mental hospital there in 1901 and she died there in 1939. I'm most interested in info about her and her family & husband, Ernest Kalb who later (after her commitment) moved to Peoria, IL (where I reside). If these names ring anyone's bell, I'd sure like to hear from you. Sincerely, Nancy Peoria, IL
Hi Jill, Couldn't believe my eyes when I saw "Moir Hall." My name is Evaleen Flanders Hoeller and I too went to nurses training in Burlington and lived in Moir Hall our freshman year of nursing. I graduated from training in 1956. Soon after they closed Moir Hall and then reopened it into offices and I believe offices for the city such as Sociol Services....I think. You may already know about the offices but I had not heard about it burning. So sorry to hear about that as it was originally a beautiful privately owned mansion of the Moir family. If you don't get a response from someone who actually knows what happened I can check with some of my nursing classmates and see if I can find out for you. I would be interested in knowing who your mother was. Let me know if you need me to follow up...my e-mail JHOE432@AOL.COM
Hello list, I was wondering if anyone could give me some background on Moir Hall in Burlington. My mom stayed there when she was in nurses training back in the late 50's and always talks about Moir Hall. I know it was damaged by fire in 1980 and was wondering how bad the damage was, did they restore it, and is it a private home or a museum of some kind now? Thank You, Jill
Hi, I am looking for information on Eunice Carkhuff, born Feb 2, 1906, died April 14, 1992. Her maiden name Crawford. Believe her father was Luther Crawford. Would appreciate any information. Last known to be living in Burlington, Iowa. CJ Shiber

Hi Tina, Thanks for answering my post and telling me about your experience with the Burlington Courthouse. I know a couple years ago I ordered a divorce record and they sent it to me but then I tried to order a second one and they refused to help. They figured out it was for genealogy but they wrote me and never turned it over to the genealogical society. By the way thanks for sending me their site. I think since I now have the book number and page number I will try the couthouse first and see what happens. If that doesn't work I can always write the Genealogical Society. Catch you later. We usually make one trip to Burlington each spring but all the family have died now so I have no idea when we will be going again or I could get my record then. Roberta Summers.
Dear Roberta, My recent experience with the court house was this: I sent a letter to the County Clerk for a copy of my ggg-grandfather's Declaration of Intent and Naturalization papers. I even had the exact court dates. 6 weeks later I received a letter from The Des Moines County Genealogical Society stating that the people at the court house did not have time to do genealogical research, but that the Society would send me copies for a fee. The total was $8, probably less than the courthouse would've charged anyway. Conclusion: I wouldn't waste your stamp and time sending an inquiry to the court house. The Des Moines County Genealogical Society web page is http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Valley/9825 They have compiled a lot of county data over the years and can probably help you. If you think you might be doing a bit of research in DMC you might think about asking them for a listing of their publications. Good Luck! Thanks, Dave, for taking the time to send this information. If you remember anything else about Nichols Hardware, I'd love to hear it. While Tom Nichols and his family (wife Lydia, children Nellie, Louise and Kenneth) are not my direct ancestors, they are an important part of a Thompson family history I'm working to bring current. Good afternoon! I recall reading somewhere that there was at least one German newspaper in Burlington back in the mid to late 1800's. Does anyone have information about this? I beleive it I saw it on a microfilm somewhere. That's all I remember. I know, thirty lashes for not taking notes! That was way back in my early genealogy days when I was green and just tinkering with it all and didn't know any better <BG>. Thank you, Tina

Dave, Thanks for checking on Shorty Gamble. Nice to have some confirmation of my Dad's recollections of family stories. Dave -- Is it possible you also know of a hardware/furniture store in Burlington owned by Tom Nichols? He was listed on the 1920 census as owning one, but I don't know the name of it. Tom would have been 55 in 1920. Thanks for any ideas on researching this, Elizabeth Richardson, Ketchikan, Alaska erich@ktn.net -----Original Message----- From: DELLSWAB@aol.com <DELLSWAB@aol.com> To: IADESMOI-L@rootsweb.com <IADESMOI-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Thursday, June 08, 2000 7:45 PM Subject: Re: [IADESMOI] "Shorty" Gamble, Joseph A. and William Tell >I remember "Shorty" Gamble's shop from many years ago. Has anyone ever heard of a wrestler by the name of "Shorty" Gamble who wrestled in Burlington, Des Moines Co., IA in the early 1900s? He also had a gunsmith and bicycle shop with my grandfather, Joseph A.Tell, during the same years. Also looking for a list and dates of the charter members of the Typographers' Union in Burlington. Great-grandpa William Tell (yes, that was his name) was a charter member of this union. He was a printer in Burlington in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Thanks for any leads. Susan
Julie; I don't know if you have found a Roy Fleenor that lived in Mt Pleasant, Iowa. My husband worked for him in the late fifties at a garage that he had in Mt Pleasant. I think he had a daughter, Mamie, that married my older sister's brother-in law, Lester Holaday. If so- they are both dead but I think that they had a girl that is around the age of my children. The name of Dresser is familiar to me. Margaret Parsons Forest lake, Mn
