    1. Re: [IADESMOI] CLARK, MARTIN, GRAHAM
    2. Barbara Archer
    3. Hello, list, The families I am researching in Des Moines County, Burlington area, are CLARK/E, MARTIN, and GRAHAM. Records show that my gggrandparents, Thomas C. Clark and Mary Laura Martin, were married in Burlington in 1857. Their oldest son, Morace Milton Clark, was born there in 1858. An 1856 census record for Burlington shows a family named Martin living there; it was composed of John Martin, age 47, Giles Martin, age 45, a Mary Martin age 16 (wrong--she would have been 18, but this could be a transcription error), and two young men named Robert and John Graham, of New York. Mary's mother was a Graham and had apparently died before 1850. I am guessing that the Graham boys were cousins. I do not know which Martin, John or Giles, was her father, but they were probably brothers. They are listed as being from Scotland, while Mary's birthplace is given as England. Family tradition has her as Scottish, so I am assuming the Martins came from one of the Border counties. Thomas Clark may be related to James Clarke, b. 1812, the third territorial governor of Iowa, who founded the Burlington Gazette. He died in about 1846 during a cholera epidemic. I do not know why Thomas was in Burlington in 1857 and the 1856 census shows no entry for him in Des Moines County. How he met Mary Martin is a mystery like many others. Any information would be appreciated, Barbara Archer

    1. [IADESMOI] BRONSON, PRETTYMAN
    2. I am researching Mathew Bronson who was in the 1860 Federal Census for Des Moines Co. as a farmhand for the John and Elizabeth Long family in Danville Twp. I have census records, etc. but am looking for naturalization records for him as I don't find him earlier then this. He is a brick wall for me - no parents or siblings, not on any passenger lists from Norway, his birthplace. Possibly he may have changed his name. The other family from Des Moines Co. I am researching is the William and Elizabeth Prettyman family. Children listed in the 1860 census are John, Robert, Sarah, Abby and Asal. All children except the last who was 10 yrs of age were born in Ohio. I am looking for John, Robert's family, and Abby's family. Abby married a Monrow. Robert and Abby moved with parents and sister Sarah to Decatur County Iowa and are there in the 1880 census. Sarah married Mathew Bronson in Des Moines Co. in 1866. I have copy of marriage document. Thank you for any help you can give me. Stacey momdit@aol.com

    2. Phil Fleming
    3. I'm Phil Fleming, and I've joined the list to find more information on three families: Fleming, Carson, and Cook. I am descended from Michael Fleming, who as born in Mitchelstown, Co. Cork, Ireland in 1823 and came to Burlington with his wife Bridget Maher Fleming and some of his children (others were born in Burlington) via Louisiana in 1858. I have a lot of information on Michael, but not on all of his children or descendants. Michael's grandson, my grandfather, married Dorothy Carson, the daughter of William and Louise (Cook) Carson (see below). I am also descended from William Carson, who was born in Eau Galle, Wisconsin in 1859 and came to Burlington as an adult to take part in the timber business. He married Louise A Cook, daughter of Lyman Cook (see below). They were my great-grandparents. I am also descended from Lyman Cook, who was born in Licking Co, Ohio, in 1820 and came to Burlington in 1840. He married (1) Octavia W. Lorain in 1846 and they had two children, Mary Frances Cook and Harry T. Cook, neither of whom I have been able to learn much about. Octavia died in 1856. Lyman then married Lucia G. (Williams) St. John, widow of a Rufus St. John, in 1861, and they had two children, Lyman C. Cook, who died in infancy, and Louise A. Cook, who married William Carson (above). There's plenty of information on Michael Fleming, his son John Joseph Fleming, and even my grandfather, Philip B. Fleming, as well as on William Carson and Lyman Cook, but the records I've been able to look at don't have much on their families I'd like to "flesh out" the information I have, and trace the siblings families. -- Phil Philip B. "Phil" Fleming Canton, Illinois, USA pfleming@TheRamp.net Researching: Barclay in NYC area, Bracken and Braden in Pennsylvania, Carson in (lower) Canada, Wisconsin, and Burlington,Iowa, Coles in New England, Cook in New England, Licking Co. OH, and Burlington IA, Edmonds in Schuylkill Co. PA and NYC/New England Fleming in Co. Cork Ireland, Louisiana, and Burlington, Iowa Ulman in New York City area and related families of all the above

    3. My search has just taken me to Iowa. The primary name I know, at this point, is RANBARGER and variations of that name. Part of the family was in Illinois from about 1825 (Lawrence county), and eventually in the Rock Island county area. Some of the family remained in Kentucky. We have them there from the late 1700s. 3. My Des Moines County ancestors are Thomas Boswell Ratliff, born 13 Dec 1805, Louisa Co, VA, died 14 June 1891, Des Moines Co, IA. His wife was Sarah A. Henderson, born 25 Feb 1813, Pickaway Co, OH, died 6 Jan 1892, Des Moines Co, IA. They are both buried at the Pleasant Grove Church cemetery. Their children were John Westly, David Calhoun, Mary Jane Needham, Elizabeth May Bown, Lucy Ann Fitzgerald, Lewis L., George W., Thomas P., Franklin P. and Francis M. I believe Lewis L. was the only child who remained in Des Moines County - he and his wife are also buried at Pleasant Grove, but I don't know if they had any children. Michele Cragg

    3. Good evening, We have gained about 14 new subscribers in the last few weeks. If you have not already done so, please post a message letting us know about your surname interests in Des Moines Co., IA For that matter, I think it would be great to hear from any of our subscribers. Although I not have found many ancestors in the Rootsweb mailing lists, I have discovered many new resources and problem solving strategies by reading how others have conducted their research. Would anyone like to share a recent breakthrough? Has anyone found a Des Moines County resource particularly helpful? Lately, I've come to appreciate the newspaper obituaries. I discovered the married names of two ggg-aunts by finding my gg-grandfather's obituary in The Hawk Eye. You know how it is, the girls eventually disappeared from the census and I didn't know if they married or had died. As it happens, Dorothea Drebenstedt had become Dorothea Eckermann and moved to Alhambra County, CA and Mary had wed William Young and moved to Mt Pleasant. I am now close to locating their living descendants. Perhaps pictures or stories have come down their branch of the family tree that would be of interest to me. http://www.familysearch.org has microfilmed copies of mortuary records for Des Moines County although I do not think that they go back further than 1880.
