Posted on: Des Moines County Iowa Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Ia/DesMoines/98 Surname: Graham ------------------------- My GRAHAM ancestors were early settlers of Iowa; they came from Ireland. My great-great-grandfather, their son John Graham, was born in 1820 and died in Iowa in August 1850, while building a mill on a river; he had pneumonia. In 1840, he left Iowa and came down to Union Co., Arkansas and married my GGGrandmother, Elizabeth Langley, daughter of Simon Langley, Sr. and Judith ?. Elizabeth was born April 23, 1823 in PA or KY and died Oct. 18, 1890 in Friendship, Bienville Parish, LA. She and John had 3 children to die young in Iowa: Wm, Bolen and Lucinda. Jasper Newton Graham was born in 1847. When John died, Elizabeth was expecting my great-grandfather, John Wesley Graham. The older Mr. and Mrs. Graham died and John's four brothers left Iowa on horseback. Two went one way and two went another. It is believed that possibly two of them went toward the Carolinas. Elizabeth came back to her parents' home in Ouachita Co., Ark., where John Wesley was born March 9, 1851. My great aunt, John Wesley's daughter, told me they lived in Plymouth, Iowa but I have never found a town or county even sounding like that. Maybe it was a town then. Why did she name her son Jasper Newton? Did they live in one of those counties?! After John died, Elizabeth and Jasper lived with her wealthy relatives in Iowa before coming back to Ark. There were two old-maids and a bachelor. If you have any information on this family, please email me. Thank you so much, Shirley Burks Wells

I have updated and expanded my webpage covering the wagon train captained by Samuel EIKENBARY, that left the Henry - Des Moines counties area of Iowa in March 1849, and arrived in the California gold country in August 1849. I've included information on the people known for certain to have been on that trip, plus a long list of people who might have been on the train. A number of these 49ers later came to Oregon to settle. If you have any information or questions, drop me a note. Sandy Wilbur http://www.netcom.com/~symbios/eiken.html
I am researching the Iles and associated families of Des Moines Co. and the adjacent counties of Henry and Louisa. Several members of my Iles family lived in these areas most having moved from Ohio in the mid 1800's. Though many later moved further west some remained and are buried in Jagger Cemetery near Danville as well as Pleasent Grove Cemetery just a few miles to the west in Henry Co. I would appreciate hearing for anyone with any information or connection to these families. You can checkout my WorldConnect database for these and other Des Moines Co. families at < http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=seli5& id=I39> Also, check out my photo gallery of all Jagger Cemetery tombstones at < http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumList?u=851789> Dwight Iles email - Ciles@aol.com websites - http://www.my-ged.com/iles/ - http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=seli5&I11.x=30&I11.y=7

I am searching for the name of the place where four of my ancestors would have been born. I'd also like to verify the birth dates of these people. I have the following information: Mary Crook born Sept. 1883 - Des Moines, Iowa; Florence Isabella Crook born June 28, 1885 - Des Moines, Iowa; Elmer Aaron Crook born April 1888 - Des Moines, Iowa; and George Eldon Crook born Dec. 19, 1890 - Des Moines, Iowa. I don't know if this is referring to the County of Des Moines, or the town/city of Des Moines, but my guess is that it probably is the County. Is there an index to birth registrations available? Were birth announcements publicized in newspapers? Are there baptism records available? If not, can anyone suggest some ideas as to how I can find out what township this family may have been living in? Thanks for any help or advice you are able to give me.
