Have you tried contacting the Des Moines Co., Genealogical Soc. in Burlington? They have directories for Aspen Grove Cemetery and am sure they would be happy to look through their records for you for a very nominal fee. They are located in the Burlington IA library. Hi - Does anyone know if naturalization records for Des Moines County exist? My 2 greats grandfather, Mathew Bronson, came from Norway sometime around 1860 according to family legend. I first find him in census records in 1860 in Danville Twp. Des Moines County, Iowa living with the John Long family as a farmhand. I've been unable to locate information about his coming to America. Family legend also says that he was a crew member on a ship from Norway and jumped ship in New York Harbor in order to stay in America. He died before the 1900 census so I don't have any idea if he was naturalized or not. If he was it would have been in either Des Moines County or Decatur County, Iowa. Also, I'm looking for information on my Prettyman family who lived in Des Moines County, Iowa from 1852 to around 1878. There were a few family members who died in Des Moines County that I haven't been able to find in the cemeteries. John Prettyman died in 1861 and Charles Monrow died in 1867. Also there were several family marriages in the 1860's and 70's. Is there anyone who can help me with some lookups on these marriages? I'd appreciate any help I can get as I'm at a standstill on this family at the moment. They lived in Flint River Twp. in the 1860 and 1870 census records. William Prettyman and wife Elizabeth - children: Rachel Ann b. 1835 m. Peter Blayor 1854; John b. 1839 d. 1861 and possibly was married; Robert b. 1841 m. Mary Albertson 1877; Sarah b. 1844 m. Mathew Bronson 1866; Abby Jane b. 1847 m. Charles Monrow 1866 and had a child Francis b. 1867 - Charles Monrow died Dec 26, 1867; Arie b. 1850 m. John Watts 1866; William S. Prettyman b. March 10, 1859 and died July 17, 1881; also Mary Frances who was born about 1861 and was the grandchild of William and Elizabeth - she is listed with the Prettyman family in 1870 at age 9 and then with William as a grandchild in 1880 in Decatur Co. as Mary Collins so there was a marriage for her also, probably in Des Moines Co. I live near a large genealogy library and am willing to do lookups in return for help with my Des Moines County family if anyone is interested. I have all federal census records available as well as many, many books from all over the states and many other resources. Give me an area and I'll let you know what I can do. All help is greatly appreciated! Stacey Dietiker momdit@aol.com

Hi there, I have never been to Burlington nor Iowa and given that I am in Germany I probably won't for quite a while. Thus my access to census documents is virtually non-existent but I did find the 1856 census very helpful. My family is the Irish Welch line from Burlington and the 1856 census said that Steven Welch was there for a year and not yet married to Mary Murry (whom I have as a Murray but I presume it's the same person). Steven (whom I have as Stephen) and Mary had a son. That son was married to a Ferrick Sabina Mary. I have as of today been unable to find anything about the Ferrick family. I was told by a rather knowledgable fellow in Burlington (John Welch - whom one should certainly try to convince to participate in your efforts since he does know a lot about my family) that the Ferricks came over from Ireland on a ship called the John Wright/Bright/Bride or so. Has anyone any knowledge of such ship or maybe even about the Ferricks themselves? One of the Ferrick sisters - Mary - married a Mc Partland ... the other Anna someone from the Northern East Coast and was never heard of again, well and Sabina married the Welch son Michael Joseph of Steven/Stephen and Mary Murr(a)y. The parents of the 3 Ferrick sisters (they also had one brother Patrick and a twin of one of them that died at sea) were Patrick Ferrick and Bridget Mary? Daly. She died in 1902 in Burlintong Sabina in 1903 in childbirth (child died too) and Patrick Ferrick died supposedly around 1949. Oh, maybe -btw - it could have been Anna who married a McPartland. The Ferricks must have been in Burlington at the latest 9 months prior to 14 Sept 1884 (the birth of the first son of Michael Joseph Welch and Sabina Ferrick.) I certainly wished there were more census transcripts online. :(. Anyway. If anyone here has ever heard of these people. Please let me know.
Dear Mr. Webb, Thank you for sharing knowledge of your library with the list. Also, thank you for your generous contributions to genealogy. Greetings Don and to the list, I wrote to you over this past weekend with ideas on improving the site. I think if we all band together, we can make this a very informative site. For example: Send Don all of our family group information and he can post it to the site. We can make our own cemetery listings just by giving him the names of each of our ancestors and which cemetery they are buried in. I know I have several obituaries with other names on the paper, I can send them too. I know I have several Burnett-Wallen Burial Books, and I will send that information to him so he can post it to the site. I also have the 1930 Burlington City directory which I intend in sending to him to post to the site. I have several other references books I want to copy and send to post to the site. Over the weekend, I was going to start posting some things but didn't know where to post them. Let's all work together and build this website up. Your Friend in Christ, Jill
Nice to hear again from you Lisa. It was a man who offered a lot of information for the county site, said it would take me a lot more time to do it, but it would be worth it. To whomever it was, the time it takes me to enter information for a new DesMoines County project is immaterial, I will find the amount of time I need to do it. Of course I would not kid about this....I have two or three sites already with 90 to 100 pages each. I am very anxious to connect with that individual, but I don't know how. I just hoped that with his interest in the county, he might be a subscriber to this mailing list.
