    2. found in grandmother West's scrapbook Barry West from Leon Journal-Reporter Wm Sanders, Jr., of near Chariton was on top load of hay; Team knocked down Wm. H. Sanders, Jr. 34 cousin of Bill and Leonard Sanders of Leon was killed instantly Monday morning when struck by a bolt of lightning. Sanders with Bert Spoon and his son, Amos Spoon were putting up hay on the Sanders farm, 2 miles west of the overhead bridge on the Oakley road when the tragedy occurred. The farmers had nearly completed the haying and had only two more shocks of hay to put on the rack. The men were hurrying to get the hay up before the approaching storm. Sanders was on the top of the load and the other men were pitching hay to him. The lightning struck Sanders on the top of the head and went out through his left foot. His shoe was torn off and he was hurled to the ground. The other men were knocked down by the bolt and the team of horses also Injured. Besides his widow, he leaves two children and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Sanders and three brothers. Just 11 years ago, Sanders' brother, Howard was killed in a wood saw accident. Bill Sanders and son, Junior and Leonard Sanders will attend the funeral services which will be held at the Beardsley Funeral home at 2:00 p.m. today.
