IOWA OFFICIAL REGISTER 1933-1934 BIOGRAPHIES OTHER STATE OFFICERS BURGESS WILSON GARRETT, LEON. - Clerk of the Supreme Court, was born on a farm in Van Buren county, Iowa, February 24, 1872. When a small child his parents moved to Davis county, and later, to Decatur county. Mr. Garrett was educated in the public schools, Simpson college and St. Joseph university, from which institution he graduated. He taught school for a number of years, being principal of the Decatur high school. Has been chairman of the county central committee; member of the senatorial and congressional committees. He was pardon secretary under Governor Cummins. Served in that capacity until July 4, 1907,when he became the first secretary of the board of parole. He resigned to become a candidate for the office he now holds. During his first term the office was made appointive; he has been five times appointed by the supreme court and is now serving his sixth term. Was temporary chairman of the republican state convention in 1916. Was temporary and permanent chairman of the state judicial convention in 1928.
