GEORGE CALLAHAN CALLAHAN, ERB, LAYTON, ADMIRE, SPENCER, MCCULLAGH Posted By: David <railrider503@aol.com> Date: 1/9/2005 at 22:44:11 The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa Thursday, August 15, 1907 GEORGE CALLAHAN was born in Johnson County, Ind., March 10, 1831, and died at his home in Chariton, Aug. 9, 1907, aged 76 years, 4 months and 29 days. He moved with his parents from Johnson County to Brown County, Ind., when quite young, living there until November, 1854, when he came with his parents to Iowa, settling on a farm in Lucas County, where he lived until the spring of 1876, when he moved to Chariton, where he has since resided. He was married to MATILDA ERB, April 22, 1866. To this union six children were born, three of whom with the widow survive him, viz., JAMES E., of Memphis, Tenn.; EDWARD, of Redfern, South Dakota, and AMY C., of Chariton, the two sons being unavoidably absent from the funeral. He was the fifth child of JEREMIAH and HARRIET CALLAHAN. Besides the widow and children he leaves two brothers and three sisters to mourn his loss, viz , ANA N. and NEWTON, of Derby; MRS. ELIZA LAYTON, of Chariton; MRS. MARY ADMIRE, of Whitebreast Township, and MRS. TABITHA SPENCER, of Cleveland, MRS SPENCER being absent from the funeral. He was a kind and indulgent husband and father. He went to Minnesota in April of 1861, where he enlisted Dec. 31, 1861, in Co. F, 4th Regiment, Minnesota Vol. He served two years. He re-enlisted and served to close of war. He also leaves one grandson, WYLO CALLAHAN. Funeral services were held from the home at 5 o'clock Sunday evening by Rev. McCullagh of the Presbyterian Church. he was a member of Iseminger Post No. 18 G.A.R.
