Also, it may be far easier to order online and receive via mail than to try to do it these days as a walk-in. I was surprised how easy it was for me to get these military records, or at least most of them. Census records can be searched and obtained conveniently at several on-line sources such as Ancestry.com. It seems the 1880 US census is free and can be found several places for searches.
