    3. I have this on a John W. LAYTON. Biographical and Historical Record of Ringgold and Decatur Counties, Iowa, (Lewis Publishing Company (1887)), p. 640: "J. W. LAYTON, farmer, section 27, High Point Township, was born in Putnam County, Indiana, April 28, 1831, a son of Elias P. and Sophia Layton, natives of Montgomery County, Maryland. They removed to Indiana, where the father died in1871, aged seventy-three years, and the mother in 1867, aged sixty-nine years. Mr. Layton was reared to a farmer's life, which vocation he has always followed. He was married in Putnam County, Indiana, to Phebe, daughter of Colonel James and Cassander Fisk, natives of Virginia and Kentucky respectively. She was born April 1, 1836. Their children are -- Cassander M., wife of W. W. Warrington; Lulie S. and Demarus. Cora M. is deceased. Mr. Layton has held the office of road supervisor two terms, and was elected justice of the peace, but refused to serve. Their early educational advantages were limited.
