Hi again Stacy & all, Thomas and Margaret ROSS are in Mahaska Co., Iowa in 1850. The guess about the name Isaiah was correct--he's 4. If the supposition is correct that they may be the grandparents of Hannah Jane Ross you are seeking, the one of their sons was probably her father--perhaps killed in or he died as a result of injuries in the Civil War? The sons in the household in 1850 are: George W. age 19, Thomas 13 and Jacob 11. Any of these would have been old enough to father a child by 1862 or so. In the Civil War Pension collection on Ancestry.com there is a pension file claim against the service of a Thomas Ross Jr. by father Thomas Ross Sr., guardian. The younger Thomas served in the 29th Iowa Infantry, Company G. The pension was filed for on May 1, 1882. Of course you can get that file to get the details of the children's ages, marriage date, wife's name, etc. Looks pretty likely that the Thomas Jr. is probably the father of your Hannah Jane. For what it's all worth! Sandy
