    1. response to Barry's notes
    2. Barry, your obits copied from your Grandmother West's scrapbook certainly stir memories here. I run the risk of repeating myself on these following reflections but I hope you'll all bear with me. Frank Stewart - ran the Stewart Funeral Home and the furniture store for decades. I always thought he was the most dignified looking man in town, dressed in somber, dark suits with vests - even in hot weather. However, one day he came down the street with his fly unbuttoned and I was glad to see he was human. His daughter-in-law, Gene Stewart still lives in Leon. "Nub" Harris was a close neighbor and ran the radio shop. When I was in the scouts he worked me over for my radio merit badge. Good neighbor and good citizen of Leon. Hazel Hines - mentioned as accompanist on piano or organ at several funerals. A talented musician. She played first trombone in the town band and I played second trombone. Our favorite number was "Lassus Trombone" during which I'll bet SHE could be heard all the way down at the depot. Her husband was competing dentist to my dad and he directed that band. Their daughter, Laraine (sp?) married our music teacher, Richard Parker. Doc Scholty - honored veterinarian and next door neighbor (they lived just between Nub Harris and us.) I was a curious boy and he frequently performed surgery in his driveway and explained things to me. However, his first wife and I stayed at war. Steven Carter - showered honor on the town. However, I knew his older brother, Monroe Carter much better - both as scoutmaster and school principal. Wonderful family. The dedication of Nine Eagles - if anyone would like a copy of CD Scott's speech just let me know and I'll be happy to email it to you. Barry, pls say hello to your parents, both of whom were classmates of mine . jack
