The Chariton Patriot Thursday, January 13, 1875 On Tuesday, about two p.m., a little stir was created in the southwest part of town by the smashing of a hand car by a freight train that stole upon the section hands unawares. The train was not discovered until it was too late to stop the car and get it off the track, so that all that was left was for the men to get out of the way, which they did by tumbling into the snow and rolling away from the track. They had barely got off the track when the engine struck the little car and made short work in demolishing it. The day train came up at the time, but was running so slowly as to be easily checked ------------------------------------------------------------- Copied by Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert December 8, 2005 iggy29@rnetinc.net My Note: When I read this article, I thought about how my great grandmother, Cedothia Weldon, had been accidentally shot below the knee, by a gun that was kept under the bed.. Long Creek had flooded and she went to retrieve the gun to keep it from getting wet. The only way they could get her out, and to a doctor, was by a railroad hand car. she lost that portion of her leg. When I was a kid, it was lots of fun watching two fellows pumping those hand cars down the railroad tracks...
