Others put the money in a container dangling from a cord and pulley system and then yanked a handle to send the cash up to a cashier in a sort of balcony area or half second floor. And you could buy anything from a live baby turtle to an Ingersoll pocket watch. Rick

    3. I remember those "pulleys" from the 50's in J.C. Penney's. The clerk would put your mobey and receipt into the little cup, screw it on to the pulley and pull the handle. It would go "upstairs" to a clerk who made change and sent it back to the selling clerk. My, how things have changed!!!! 3. Hello Everyone, We had the pneumatic tubes in the late 1960's when I worked for United Airlines. In reservations, we also had something similar...We filled out a card with the customer's reservation information, put it in a tube or conveyer belt, pulled a lever and off it went "somewhere!" We also had something interesting at the end of each row...if we needed to talk with another UAL location, we had a device that we could speak into, something like a megaphone. I don't remember exactly how we accessed the other location and we definitely had to have permission to use it, but it was a pretty neat thing. In the early 1990's, I was teaching at a travel training school. This particular class was learning to use the airline computerized reservation system, which is fairly complex with a lot to learn. Like most things, it's easy once you learn it, but the learning process can be pretty horrific! I wanted to encourage the class and make them a little more comfortable with what they were going through, so I made the statement, "Before there were computers," and then was going to explain how I had learned to make reservations manually and then had to learn how to do it with the computer. The class was made up mostly of early 20-year-olds and when I said, "Before there were computers," I happened to be looking at one of the girls on the front row...her eyes got so big and her mouth literally dropped open and she said with GREAT wonder in her voice, "Before there were computers!!!" Like, how could that possibly be??? I couldn't help it, it was so funny, I burst out laughing and asked her permission to share her statement with the class. She was a very sweet person and said, "Sure." We all had a good laugh and it did help break the tension in the room...and I was able to finish my story, too. I also used the word, "Notions," with my great-niece this past week...and it was definitely a word she had never heard...just think, we have a whole new generation to educate!!! May God bless each of you abundantly during the coming New Year! 3. Even my son's generation (he's 31 tomorrow) missed out on a lot of great things, drive-in movies (went when he was young, A&W drive-ins (went when he was very small), playing outside & making up games (yes, it's the computer game age), playing board games with the "old" folks (that just didn't seem to appeal to his generation). There were too many things out there. I feel sad that he didn't have the same childhood we had. I cherish all the memories! Barbara (Kelley) Trammell Texas

    3. I, too, feel sad about our children not getting to enjoy our good old days ... however, I am now getting old enough to listen to them and their cousins bewail the fact that their children can't enjoy "their good old days" ... I guess the sadness comes to all of us. We might ask our children, nieces and nephews what their favorite memories are of their childhood. We might be surprised! (smile) They will probably select their favorite memories and try to show those to their children. For example, my nieces and nephews and daughters all see to it their children visit zoos all over the US. Still I have to admit, I miss seeing the kids out on their bikes and playing ball (with made up rules) in their back yards in our little town! Gayle in Kansas
