    1. [IADECATU] DEATH OF JOHN S. COZAD
    2. Nancee Seifert
    3. Decatur County Journal Leon, Iowa Thursday, March 28, 1912 JOHN S. COZAD was born in Warren County, Indiana, May 3, 1843, and died at his home in Moulton, Iowa, March 16, 1912, aged 68 years, 10 months and 13 days. He came with his parents to Decatur County, Iowa, in 1854, where he grew to manhood. He enlisted in the 7th Missouri Cavalry, April 1, 1862 and served three years in the war. In July, 1886, he was married to REBECCA A. DALE, of Decatur County. To this union five children were born, three of whom are still living, EMMA MCELDERY, of Appanoose County, Iowa; WM. T., of Kansas; and A.F., of Decatur County, Iowa, and made his home there until his death. His wife died in 1874, and in 1876, he was married to SARAH A. SWANK, of Appanoose County, who survives him. His death came suddenly, from a stroke of apoplexy. He was in his usual health and was stricken and died in a few minutes, without regaining consciousness. He had been a member of the Christian Church for a number of years and lived an earnest Christian life, so we mourn not as others who have no hope." He was brought back to Decatur County and funeral services were held at the old homestead in Morgan Township, where his early life had been spent. Services were conducted by H A. Cowles of Pleasanton, after which he was tenderly laid to rest in the Dale Cemetery, there to await the sounding of the trumpet on the resurrection morning. ---------------------------------------------------------- Copied by Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert December 28, 2009 [email protected]

I connect collaterally via two of John Swank COZAD's siblings, William Courtland COZAD who m. Nancy Jane BRIGHT and Sarah Rosanna who married William Walker WOOD, all Decatur Countians. The siblings were children of Mr. Alice COZAD (1809-1868) and Emeline SWANK (1821-1902). My late cousin Floyd COZAD said Alice was a Scottish name, so perhaps short for Alistair, a popular given name in Scotland. Floyd, who died in 1971, was a font of information on oldtime Decatur County. Rick
