However, for Iowa Civil War soldiers the National Guard headquarters in Des Moines used to have files available to the public, and there is a nationwide online index of Union forces pensioners which shows if an application was filed and it provides the file number(s) which greatly simplifies a search at the Archives. You can access that roster via ancestry.com or a Google search. Typical Civil War pension files for Union troops are loaded with good info (marriage date/place, children's names, residence data and supportive comments from neighbors and wartime comrades). I have not requested a file from the Archives for many years but I've always found it worth the effort. Good luck! Rick, Merced, CA
Thanks Rick, I was going to re-submit for Samuel H. HINDS. Last time they sent me a file for the same name for a soldier in KY with the same name. I posted on GenForum, hoping to find that family so I could give them the file but I had no inquiries. I am hoping Samuel's file was mis-filed.
