    1. [IADECATU] SHY & WOODMANSEE CEMETERIES.
    2. Nancee Seifert
    3. 'Cemetery Gypsy' here -- with another note about finding Shy and Woodmansee Cemeteries. Didn't have any problems finding Shy and the weather was really nice.. The steel sign is very nice, and can be seen from a distance. This is mowed, however, there are many stones that are down in the ground and have fallen over.. I did take my 'one handled' tire iron and dig up several that were in the ground, so I could take pics of them. I'm sure the mowing caretaker will not be pleased with me.. A whole box of white chalk and a sore thumb later, I looked for a grave for a friend, with my witching wires. . There are a lot of unmarked graves there -- as with all other cemeteries. The grave I was looking for was indeed that of a female, since my wires crossed and came back to my shoulders.. It is often strange when one of the wires will go off in another direction by itself -- looking for something.. They will cross and then go completely out in the opposite directions and then just move back and forth together - as if there are several force fields and the wires are trying to connect to all of them... Very interesting... So, I left there and decided I'd try to find Woodmansee Cemetery off Hwy 2, west of Decatur. My map still shows old road numbers - not the extended 911 numbers & names they now have. So I turned on the (what I thought was the first) road going north and drove around for a while. I knew I wasn't on the right trail, but did come across the old Elk School and old Elk Chapel, which I stopped to take pictures of.. So, I went back to Hwy 2 and tried again.. The first road to the north said 'dead end' and there was a house at the end of the road; it had a stop sign, so I headed north on it -- and after you go around the house, there sits Woodmansee Cemetery, where the road does, indeed, dead end. So, I took pics and chalked stones -- then ran out of picture card memory... So, will have to go back to get the rest.. In all, I took 253 pictures between the two cemeteries.. and had only a part of a piece of chalk left... The cemetery is quite nice and mowed, with a few stones down. It also has a nice steel sign that you can see from a distance. I wonder if I'll get all of the Decatur County Cemeteries perused this summer - which is my plan.. Will definitely have to purchase more picture memory cards for my camera.. I had just purchased 3 boxes of white chalk and they are ALL GONE.. And, yes, the ticks were out and hungry... Maybe I'll start a 'tick farm', you know, like an 'ant farm'... If I'd kept all the ticks I've picked off of me, I'd have a nice start.. Is human/animal blood all they eat? Irrelevant, I know.... My Best, Nancee - the 'Cemetery Gypsy'

I think Jesse Jr was told this by Cole Younger. This book is in Mid Continent Libraries. I also found an old Cameron MO newspaper article that reported holding Jesse s body, (while removing it to Kearney for burial) in the same railroad car that had previously held the body of William Westfall. Sometime toward the end of his life, Frank was put on trial in Gallatin MO, the town just east of the holdup at Winston. He was somehow exhonerated. I would imagine the killing of Mr. Westfall was brought up in that trial. There is information out there on that trial. I found this very interesting. Just thought I would share. Sharon

    1. [IADECATU] MANCHESTER CEMETERY
    2. Nancee Seifert
    3. Yesterday, I headed for the Manchester Cemetery -- with the expert directions Janet Jelsma gave to me.. I have a feeling she knows more about Decatur County than we are aware of.. (She seems to be pretty quiet... smile ..) Again, you can see the location of this cemetery on the Decatur Co. Maps; Eden Township, on the Decatur Co. website. The weather was not all that pleasant, having just had rain and the wind was blowing, with temps in the high 50s.. Of course, that does not deter me in the least. This cemetery is fenced and mowed, however, it is in very poor and declining condition. I took pictures of all the stones I could find (a couple I couldn't lift) and put them on the Iowa Gravestone Photos for Stacey to approve.. While I'm on the subject of the cemetery condition, I would be happy to forward some of the pictures to anyone who might want to see them.. I continue to try to share these things with others on the List, but am getting little or no response, which also disappoints me.. When I left Manchester Cemetery, I went on over to Meek to take the remaining headstone pictures I didn't get when I was there the other day. The lane leading to Meek is interesting and a bit difficult to navigate because of rain and deep ruts -- but, onward!!! I, then, decided to find Chastain Cemetery, which is just on down the way and sits back on one of the large farms there.. Not seeing any way to enter the cemetery, I stopped at the farm and talked with the owner, his son and a couple of other area farmers.. One thing about it, they have a sense of humor when they see an old lady in white sneakers who wants to walk over to the cemetery.... The young fellow said, "well, you'll have to walk in mud." I said, "how much mud?" Of course, what he was saying translates to -- "And just how much cow manure do you want to trudge through?" ha... Well, seeing as how I hadn't brought my 'hog boots' with me (and, yes, I do have them) I told them I'd come back later.. I can go through the white iron gates whenever I want.. They were busy -- but I think the young fellow would have taken me for a ride on/in his 'gator' thing over to the cemetery. I will go back soon!! They said it doesn't dry out until August.. while they all grinned..... The farm owner said he has to pay taxes on all six cemeteries in Eden Township -- he is also a trustee. I didn't want to take up anymore of their time, so we didn't really discuss anything else.. The ticks were out in record numbers..Of course there are always a couple that come home with me. So, I make another note of 'things to take when going to old cemeteries' -- camera, extra batteries, single handle tire iron witching wires, chalk, water to drink and wash my hands with, toilet paper, paper towels, snacks & coffee or coke, -- and -- HOG BOOTS.. Well, just an update from the 'cemetery gypsy'.... Nancee

She hesitated, uncertain how to classify herself. "What I mean is, " explained the recorder, "do you have a job or are you just a ...?" "Of course I have a job," snapped the woman. "I'm a Mom." "We don't list 'Mom' as an occupation, 'housewife' covers it," Said the recorder emphatically. I forgot all about her story until one day I found myself in the same situation, this time at our own Town Hall. The Clerk was obviously a career woman, poised, efficient, and possessed of a high sounding title like, "Official Interrogator" or "Town Registrar." "What is your occupation?" she probed. What made me say it? I do not know. The words simply popped out. "I'm a Research Associate in the field of Child Development and Human Relations." The clerk paused, ball-point pen frozen in midair and looked up as though she had not heard right. I repeated the title slowly emphasizing the most significant words. Then I stared with wonder as my pronouncement was written, in bold, black ink on the official questionnaire. "Might I ask," said the clerk with new interest, "just what you do in your field?" Coolly, without any trace of fluster in my voice, I heard myself reply, "I have a continuing program of research, (what mother doesn't) In the laboratory and in the field, (normally I would have said indoors and out). I'm working for my Masters, (first the Lord and then the whole family) and already have four credits (all daughters). Of course, the job is one of the most demanding in the humanities, (any mother care to disagree?) and I often work 14 hours a day, (24 is more like it). But the job is more challenging than most run-of-the-mill careers and the rewards are more of a satisfaction rather than just money." There was an increasing note of respect in the clerk's voice as she completed the form, stood up, and personally ushered me to the door. As I drove into our driveway, buoyed up by my glamorous new career, I was greeted by my lab assistants -- ages 13, 7, and 3. Upstairs I could hear our new experimental model, (a 6 month old baby) in the child development program, testing out a new vocal pattern.. I felt I had scored a beat on bureaucracy! And I had gone on the official records as someone more distinguished and indispensable to mankind than "just another Mom." Motherhood! What a glorious career! Especially when there's a title on the door. Does this make grandmothers "Senior Research associates in the field of Child Development and Human Relations" And great grandmothers "Executive Senior Research Associates?" I think so!!! I also think it makes Aunts "Associate Research Assistants." Please send this to another Mom, Grandmother, Aunt, And other friends you know. May your troubles be less, Your blessing be more, And nothing but happiness come through your door! AMEN!

    3. p.s. Paula said the cemetery must be identified as a pioneer cemetery and Decatur Co. has how many? Nancee? At least 5 that have been neglected and would qualify? 3. I was on the phone with Paula from the State Historical Society and mentioned the condition of the Cemeteries in Decatur County. This is the link she gave me, below. While at a conference for IAGenWeb Coordinators, Dan Clark with the Iowa State Historical Society was there. They are looking for information on Underground Railroads. If you have Decatur County stories about them, I'll pass 'em on. Please share here on the group, too, so Stacey can get it onto her Decatur County site. Maybe Bob would like them too for the museum. One more thing. The next council meeting in Kellerton is Tuesday, city hall, at 7 p.m. If anyone can & will show up in support of the move & salvation of the Foland School house, I can use all the live bodies I can get. If you can't show up, I can use all the e-mails in support I can get. If the council won't give me an extension on the deadline to move it (which I NEED because the grants won't come through until June & July) then we are done and we lost the building. THANK YOU!!! (E-mail me off-site for this, please.) Sharon R.
