Decatur County Journal February 7, l90l MARGARET MAUDE STONE died in Lamoni Tuesday evening, January 29th, at l0:30 o'clock aged 2l years, l month and 2 days. She was the youngest daughter of JOHN and MARGARET STONE, and was born in Decatur December 27th, l879. The funeral services were held at the home of MRS. MARGARET STONE on last Friday morning at ll o'clock and were conducted by Rev. W.H. Ilsley, pastor of the Leon Presbyterian Church, who delivered an appropriate and able discourse. Excellent singing was furnished by a choir from Decatur City. A numerous crowd attended the funeral, and a procession composed of more than one hundred vehicles wended its way to the Shy Cemetery where the remains were laid at rest. The deceased graduated from the Leon High School in the class of '97. She was extremely popular among her associates and acquaintances, all of whom deplore her sad and untimely death. I've been getting the headstones put on the Gravestone Photo Site and came across one in Shy Cemetery that has me intrigued... This stone is laying in the ground and after chalking it, I believe the name to be ALLYBELL RAUCH, daughter of E.L. & S.H. RAUCH; died 1865; 11months old. The cemetery transcription has the name ?BAUGH -- which is completely understandable when these are so old and unreadable.. They continue to lay in the ground and are mowed over. I've magnified this stone as much as possible to try to read it better. Does anyone know who this RAUCH child might have been? Stacey has approved all the other cemetery photos that I've put on the Gravestone Photo Site; and is working on Shy (as I've been working on it) When she has it all o.k.d you can see this headstone and maybe help to identify who this is.. I'm also in the process of posting Woodmansee headstones.. "Rain, rain, go away; Come again another day..." Nancee
Mac - I am so sorry to hear of your mother's death. I always thought growing up that you had the prettiest mother in Decatur!! I didn't realize she was 89, but guess none of us are getting any younger!! Please give Denny, Bonnie and Patsy my condolences in her passing. I assume the burial was in Decatur? Couldn't remember if your Dad was buried in Decatur or not. What ever happened to Kenneth Meek, your mom's brother, that was the sheriff years ago?? Was he younger or older than your mom? I can't believe the Dinky Diner ran out of tenderoins - but they are great. I always have to have one when we are in Decatur. It doesn't look like we will make a trip to Iowa this year - we are leaving tomorrow for Branson for a couple weeks. Lee has his annual fraternity reunion north of Springfield (Jack is a fraternity brother of Lee's at Northwest Missouri, but he doesn't come to the reunions). We will stay at our home we have there until the 1st of June. At least I can get my tenderloin fix in Branson - have found several places that have great ones!! We do have internet at our home there and can keep up with my e-mails and the Decatur website. Nancee - I was talking to Wendell's wife, Helen, yesterday. You remember her from years ago don't you when we were all young and first married?? I told her we were related - our great grandfathers brothers - she was surprised and said she would tell Wendell. I understand. My husband's sister had Altzheimer's and was just not herself. This started when she was very young....in her 50's and she was regressing so fast, couldn't carry on a conversation and looked like a little old woman before her time. Sweetest person you could ever meet but she was a Christian so we know she's with all who have gone before her and they are all chatting, happily away!!! I know she was ready to be released! The farm the Chastain Cemetery is on used to be the Walton farm. I believe Mennonites own it now....not sure though. You probably won't need your "hog boots" in August but you will need a big fan and lots of water to drink!!! ' Jna
Sarah, In 1996 & 1997 the Clarke County Genealogical Society canvassed every cemetery in the county, and are published in 2 books, which I believe you can still get from the society. The books have maps of every cemetery showing how the sections are divided, and named or numbered, as well as driving directions to each. Row numbering starts on the west side of the cemetery (or section) and moves east, and the stone numbering starts on the north and runs to the south. therefore in any given section stone therefore stone 01-01 will always be in the north west corner of the cemetery or section. Keep in mind, new burials my have happened in the rows, & thereby throw off the stone count, but the following should get you in the right area. You may find the books in the genealogy room in the basement of the Osceola Library. Diane Shough, the children's librarian (I'm not sure of her hours but I think she still has Friday's off) is one of the founding members of the genealogical society, and if she's there she can show you where to find the books. If you go to the library on a weekday be sure to go before school lets out, as it gets quite busy. In the Maple Hill Cemetery in Osceola, > Farild and Donna Glazebrook: Section 4, Row 26, Stone 17. In the Murray Cemetery: > Keith Glazebrook: Section 3, Row 12, Stone 12 > William P & Doris Glazebrook: Section 2, Row 49, Stone 42 Hope this helps, Jim www.civilwarnotebook.blogspot.com

I will be visiting Clarke, Decatur, and Ringgold Counties over the Memorial Day weekend to visit cemeteries. I have been there before, and there are tombstones I am not able to find. Perhaps someone on this list who is familiar with the cemeteries can help me by telling me where in the cemetery I should look for the stone. In the Maple Hill Cemetery in Osceola, I want to find the stone of Farild and Donna Glazebrook. In the Leon Cemetery, I want to find the stones of Henry & Mariah C Quiett. In the Murray Cemetery, I want to find stones for Keith Glazebrook, and William P & Doris Glazebrook. I found an index that said what row they should be in, but was never able to locate them on my last trip. In the Grand River Cemetery, I want to find Mansel and Sylvia Brammer. It is said to be a flat stone. Can anyone help me with the location of any of these tombstones? Thanks very much! _________________________________________________________________ Hotmail has tools for the New Busy. There aren't any caretakers at the cemeteries I know of in Clarke, Decatur, Lucas, Union, or Ringgold Counties, Larry. I've had good luck by going to the local funeral home. Most of them have a plat map or know where to find one. I'm not sure about all of the counties and their cemeteries, but in the bigger towns like Osceola, the upkeep of the cemeteries falls under the duties of the Parks & Rec council. Going to city hall would be the best bet if you can't find a local funeral home. Sharon R. Maple Hill in Osceola is a big cemetery. Go to Kale's Funeral Home, about 1 block north of the intersection of Highways 34 & 69, they should have a plat map. Kale's is the big white building directly across the street east of the Christian Church. For Leon Cemetery, they have a plat map at city hall. This is catty-corner across the street from Loving Chapel and directly across the street from the library - at the intersection of Highways 69 & 2. I'm not sure where you can find a plat map for Murray Cemetery. You might ask at Kale's Funeral Home since they do burials there, too. Grand River Cemetery isn't that big compared to the others you mentioned. I don't know who to contact for that plat map. If you are in Leon before going there - you might ask at Slade-O'Donnel's Funeral Home since they do burials there. Slade's is located on the n. side of Highway 2 - (going by memory) about 3 to 4 blocks east of the Dairy Queen. If you are going to Ringgold County (none of the cemeteries you list are in Ringgold County), stop at the library at Mount Ayr (s.w corner of the square). They have a room packed full of genealogical materials and town centennial books. In there is Raymond V. Banner's book listing and platting out Ringgold County's cemeteries with burials up to the year 2000, I think. The librarians there are wonderful and can help you find what you are looking for. Hope this helps. Good luck! Sharon R. Sarah I have a friend who lives in Chariton and does all her genealogy in long hand and does not own a computer. Her Mother was a Glazebrook--Pauline Juanita--and Juanita married a Parmer. Is this your line?? I believe she has been in that area all her life and if this is your line she may be able to help you with grave locations.
