    3. that's very true, sharon, about mercer and harrison and decatur and ringgold counties comin' from one of the other counties. that's prob'ly because at one time iowa claimed part of mercer and harrison counties and missouri claimed part of decatur and ringgold counties..........so......there's a strip there.....'bout 13 miles wide......where folks were constantly in a state of flux as to which state and county they belonged to and owed taxes to. hell, the folks in missouri and iowa were ready to start shootin' their neighbors, kith and kin over this!.....mac ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sharon Becker" <srbecker@iowatelecom.net> To: <IADECATU-L@rootsweb.com>; <iaringgo@rootsweb.com>; <iowa@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, May 30, 2010 12:45 PM Subject: [IADECATU] Off Topic? > While driving around yesterday, we slipped over the line > into Harrison County, Missouri, taking backroads and looking > things over. 3. While driving around yesterday, we slipped over the line into Harrison County, Missouri, taking backroads and looking things over. We came across a country church - Lone Rock Church which is beside Payne Cemetery. I took some photos and then went to the door to see if the church was locked. It was. I started to walk back to the car when this lady and her husband pulled in. The lady asked if I wanted to see inside the church. I did and she had a key!! It was beautiful inside and I took some photographs. What amazed me was that inside with this cast iron wood stove - probably the oldest I've ever seen in real life. I've seen illustrations of those kind of old stoves. It was incredible. Anyway, if anyone knows anything about this church, please e-mail me off-list. I'd like to put up a road trip page about it but don't know much beyond what the lady told me. (A lot of Decatur & Ringgold County folks came from Harrison County & vise versa, so there might be a cross-over interest here.) On another note - the countryside is absolutely beautiful!! The trees are the fullest I've ever seen them in a long, long time. I enjoyed looking at the herds of cattle and horses as we drove by. Thanks!! Sharon R. 1. [IADECATU] Abt Cemetery at Grand River
    2. HI Everyone!! My husband, parents, grandparents, aunt, uncles and cousins all buried in Grand River cemetery. My place is there waiting for me. My husband used to tell people we owned property in Grand River, he just didn't tell it was in the cemetery! I live in AZ. so my sister who lives in Des Moines makes the rounds of the cemeterys in Iowa every year. She just called me, she had taken flowers to four cemeterys between Des Moines and Grand River today. She told what sad shape some of them were in, unmowed grass, untrimmed bushes, flowers that look like they were left from last year. She said she always leaves the one at Grand River till last so she can go home in an upbeat mood. It is always so neat and well taken care of. I thought I would like to tell all of you who live away and cannot visit how well taken care of it is. I don't know if they were put on the website or not but I sent pictures that were taken on Memorial day with all the flags up. It is truly a beautiful, peaceful sight. Happy Memories, Everyone Hazel

Where you went south to the Lentz Cemetery, if you had turned north and gone a mile and a half or so you would have been at their farm. I will probably see them at the end of June if they show up at the Woodland Reunion. If anyone wants to see what people from the Woodland area look like show up at the Barnum Community Center an hour or so before noon on June 27th and you will be able to observe a whoe bunch of us. Bring a hot dish and your own table service. Might want to bring a plate too. The reunion used to be held at the fair grounds in Leon but the price went beyond our groups modest means so it was moved to Decatur. Sometimes the donations to the kitty barely cover the expense. Barnum is a great facility. Judy and Fay Patton are responsible for the arrangements. Judy even put together a Woodland history book 3 or 4 years ago. mj

My Best Always, Nancee --------------------------------------------------------------------- Nancee: Glad you enjoyed the cemeteries of Woodland Township. Back in the early 50's my mom and I were the caretakers of the 5 cemeteries in Woodland Township for a few years. We had to put in a bid each spring with the trustees to win the job. Ususally about $325 dollars for the summer. The township furnished the mower and we furnished the labor. I mowed and Mom trimed around the stones. Trimming was quite a job before string trimmers so I had the good deal. I remember one time while mowing the Beavers cemetery the mower caught on fire. Fire was shooting out of the vent hole in the gas cap about 4 feet. I hauled out of there and watched until it was over. I was glad to see that one go. It had a Clinton engine and they sucked. Got a new one with a Briggs and Stratton. As you mentioned, the Shields and Lentz cemeteries were on dead-end roads. The Shields was just west of the Bert Adair place. A lane on the west side of the Shields cemetery went south to an old bachelors place, Charlie Johnson. He never had a car. Always went to Woodland in his wagon behing a team. The road to the Lentz cemetery was a through road at one time. When I was little it ended about a quartere of a mile or so south of the cemetery. The last family I remember living at the end of the road was the Mericle family.
