Mary Booth All soldiers serving in Iowa regiments during the Civil War are listed in "Iowa Soldiers in the War of the Rebellion," which was published in several volumes in 1910, and all Civil War vets living in Iowa post-war also were published in book form and without regard to the state they served from. I believe these rosters with regimental and company numbers are also now online for those without access to the original books. Rick, Merced, CA

    3. Anyone know who to contact in Mercer Co, Mo about land ownership and how to clean up an abandoned cemetery?  Yesterday my dad and I were going to the Eastin Cemetery about 2 miles south of Pleasanton.  The road back to the cemtery has fallen from a "B Maintained" Road to a farmer's field road.  It was not this bad just a few years ago.  :(    I'm sure Mercer County has written this off as an abandoned cemetery since the last buried would have been in the 30's or 40's, but we would like to try to clean it up as my great, great grandparents & ggg grandparents plus 5 of my great aunts/uncles are buried there.    We also looked for any remainders of the town of Saline, MO.  Nothing is there anymore along the paved road to Cainsville, MO.     Thanks in advance!   ~Tracie   TRACIE McBROOM Newton, IA    --- On Mon, 5/31/10, Stacy Smith <slsmith@grm.net> wrote: From: Stacy Smith <slsmith@grm.net> Subject: Re: [IADECATU] Off Topic? 3. Thanks Rick, I was going to re-submit for Samuel H. HINDS. Last time they sent me a file for the same name for a soldier in KY with the same name. I posted on GenForum, hoping to find that family so I could give them the file but I had no inquiries. I am hoping Samuel's file was mis-filed. 3. I'll definitely let you know. I have not gone this route before--a researcher suggested that I might find some information on these pension applications concerning my gggrandfather, Zebidee Palmer/Parmer. One of the soldiers is his son and the other is his son-in-law. Zebidee is my brick wall!! I'll keep you posted on anything I find. 2. Jan - My husband is part native Hawaiian. His mother was born in Hawaii on Oahu. Her father was in the Army Reserves at the time. They lived over Pearl Harbor and on Dec. 7, 1941 her father put her and her family under a mattress to keep them safe from the strafe going through their home and ran to help. Her mother saw a bomb go down the smokestack of the Arizona from their home that day. It's an amazing story. My mother-in-law was only 2 years old at the time. Eventually her father shipped them all by submarine to San Francisco and eventually they came here to Missouri. My husband's grandfather, Col Samuel Kamu Toomey, Jr., would have been in Honolulu on VJ Day. This is terrific and I've forwarded it to his family. They will really enjoy this. 3. I wanna also say that alot of my family lived on the land surrounding Payne cemetery. And if you look at census informatino, if you didn't know any better, you'd think they moved back and forth and back and forth from Iowa to Missouri...but the Iowa/Missouri line changed all the time back then and they really just stayed put. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sharon Becker" <srbecker@iowatelecom.net> To: <IADECATU-L@rootsweb.com>; <iaringgo@rootsweb.com>; <iowa@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, May 30, 2010 12:45 PM Subject: [IADECATU] Off Topic? > While driving around yesterday, we slipped over the line > into Harrison County, Missouri, taking backroads and looking > things over. 3. I would love to have a picture of the inside of the church. I have an article about why it's named Lone Rock..I will find it and scan it or type it for you Sharon. Has to do with the one lone rock that stood near where the cemetery is. (Wagons were coming through, and the tire hit the only rock in the area, knocking off the little ?girl? that was sitting in the back of the wagon. She is the first person buried there at the cemetery.) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sharon Becker" <srbecker@iowatelecom.net> To: <IADECATU-L@rootsweb.com>; <iaringgo@rootsweb.com>; <iowa@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, May 30, 2010 12:45 PM Subject: [IADECATU] Off Topic? > While driving around yesterday, we slipped over the line > into Harrison County, Missouri, taking backroads and looking > things over. 1. [IADECATU] Honey War
    2. Sharon Becker
    3. The little dispute between the Territory of Iowa and the State of Missouri turned into what is called the Honey War. Bill e-mailed me: I can't seem to paste an address pertaining to the border dispute on the IADECATU site. There was a lot of moving back and forth across that poorly defined line from before Iowa Statehood until after the states were admitted. My great grandfather Peter Cartwright Stewart homesteaded in Center Township, Decatur County in 1851. There many reasons for choosing Iowa over Missouri in the early days; among them the Missouri Compromise allowing Maine as a "free state" and Missouri as a slave state. I won't mention it on line and start another spat with Mr. McClure. However my great grandmother would have felt that her Quaker background would have had her ready to start something. So I will attach it here for your reading. William Stewart Ames, Iowa http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honey_War Quite a few early Ringgold & Decatur County residents thought they were settling in Missouri, were slave holders, then after realizing they were in Iowa, a non-slave territory, moved back to Missouri or sold their slaves. I wrote a piece about the Honey War for Ringgold County's site: http://iagenweb.org/ringgold/history/hist-beforestatehood-honeywar.html In all of my research, I've never found a single soul who served for either Iowa or Missouri in that dispute. Except for Luke Shay of Ringgold County. He's the only one I've found. Or the only one who admitted he served in that dispute. Sharon R.
