Hi, Nancee, Thanks for posting this. George A Chick was my third cousin, 2X removed. I didn't have this news article. We all get so much information from you. Thanks, Donna Wood CO Mr. CHICK had stopped at LYMAN ANDREW's house that day and had bought a repeating rifle of Mr. ANDREW. He had then driven his car on to the farm where he had formerly resided. The car was standing in front of the house with the water drained from the radiator when Mr. BRONSON and Mr. WOODARD went to the place to look after cattle. They thought it strange that the car should be standing there apparently abandoned and began an investigation resulting in the discovery of the dead body in the hen house. The neighbors were notified and the authorities called. It is the opinion of the majority of the people that Mr. CHICK committed suicide and that he had bought the rifle with that intention. Some hold the opinion that it might have been accidental death. He leaves a wife but no children. The bereaved ones certainly have the deep and sincere sympathy of all in the tragic death of Mr. CHICK. The funeral was held from the Presbyterian Church at Grand River Monday, Rev. Vanderpoole having charge of the services.

Summer Is on the way! It's a great time to get out and walk cemeteries, take photos of headstones, churches, historical sites, visit with county recorders and clerks, and transcribe records. All of the great information and photos you collect can find a home on an IAGenWeb county or project. So can you if you become a county coordinator. It's not necessary to live in Iowa to be a coordinator - just a love of Iowa's genealogy and the desire to help others. New coordinators are needed for *GREENE,* *LUCAS,* *MONROE,* *WEBSTER,* & *WAPELLO *counties. They can all be visited at http://iagenweb.org/state/colist.php . Read more about becoming a county coordinator at http://iagenweb.org/state/primer.htm . Looking forward to hearing from you soon! IAGenWeb has an extensive Civil War site for Iowa. There's a search engine on the site and the Regiment Rosters are listed on the site. http://iagenweb.org/civilwar/ For out of state Civil War soldiers, the two databases on ancestry.com are great and more helpful than the National Parks Service database at times. These two at ancestry.com are 'American Civil War Soldiers' and 'U.S. Civil War Soldiers profiles' along with the "U.S. Soldier Interment' database. Sharon R. On the 5 p.m. news they said a tornado ripped through Ringgold County this afternoon. We are in a tornado watch until 10 p.m. The rain keeps 'knocking out' the dish so I don't know if I can catch the 10 p.m. news. The news crew was supposed to be in Ringgold County, filming the damage. Here (Osceola, Clarke County), I was taking a nap with Sadie the mini-pin and Emma the kitten. There was a clap of thunder unlike any I've ever heard (and I'm not a spring chicken - lived through 2 tornadoes, too - one when I was about 4 and one when I was 15). The clap of thunder was like a triple one and sounded like it hit by the house. The mini-pin would have jumped 10 feet in the air but the ceiling isn't that high. The kitten burrowed under the covers. And we all huddled together when the still air whipped up into a frenzy. There's a cedar tree wind break on that side of the house and they were whipping around as was the elm tree by the bedroom window. Then it was instantly still and calm - which worried me more than the wind. If you've ever been through a tornado, you'd understand why a sudden still and calm raises the hairs on the back of your neck. The bedroom is on the 2nd story of the house. There wasn't time to get to the basement the way I move these days. But we're still here. Didn't see any 'flying' cows or wicked witches or a wizard. Still in Iowa. Sharon R. Tracie, You might try Keith or Victor Seymour as to the land ownership - they own north and south of there and I think they would know, if they don't own it themselves. They are in the Mercer or Princeton or Cainsville phone book, not sure which one. You may be able to Google their phone numbers or use White Pages online. As to Saline, the remants are certainly still there. If you go south on Mercer Co. B highway out of Pleasanton, past the Freedom Cemetery (church used to be there but burned down) (P highway goes left/east there) there is another road about 3/4 to 1 mile south from there, should be marked as T highway, and turn right on that. Go past the old Center schoolhouse on the right, down the hill and the road turns left - you will be in Saline. There should still be several old buildings and houses along the road and up the hill to the east. It was not this bad just a few years ago. :( I'm sure Mercer County has written this off as an abandoned cemetery since the last buried would have been in the 30's or 40's, but we would like to try to clean it up as my great, great grandparents & ggg grandparents plus 5 of my great aunts/uncles are buried there. Tracy, I also have relatives buried at Eastin Cemetery. At one time during 1980's Someone cleaned off the cemetery. I don't know who. It stayed nice for a while. I did contact the Stewart's (aren't they the people that have taken pictures of a lot of the cemeteries in that area? They did take pictures. The last time my brother and I were there, he picked raspberries and I picked off ticks. It was all grown up, but there were also a lot of flowers and it was very peaceful. I would like to see it cleaned up, but would rather see the it as it was that day than see stones knocked over or livestock. R.J. Cornett still lives in the area and I did contact him one year and the old road was so that a cousin and I could drive back to the cemetery in his pick-up. We have Owens, Kindred, and others buried there. Carmelita in Des Moines

I am putting the gravestone photos on the site for Lentz Cemetery, and came across a stone with names that are not on the cemetery list. Does anyone have the dates for them? DANIEL LENTZ & SERENA J. This is a hand lettered stone and has pressed leaves on the back side; quite unique and pretty. Help if you can... Thanks, Nancee

I have John Stockton Davidsons Civil War Files that were given to me - If anyone is interested - contact me personally Mary Cone Stewart ---- Richard Albright <kd6dkc@sbcglobal.net> wrote: > > On Jun 1, 2010, at 8:05 AM, Mom Wade wrote: > > >> > >> Donna, > >> > >> I hope it works for you. However, for Iowa Civil War soldiers the National Guard headquarters in Des Moines used to have files available to the public, and there is a nationwide online index of Union forces pensioners which shows if an application was filed and it provides the file number(s) which greatly simplifies a search at the Archives. You can access that roster via ancestry.com or a Google search. Typical Civil War pension files for Union troops are loaded with good info (marriage date/place, children's names, residence data and supportive comments from neighbors and wartime comrades). I have not requested a file from the Archives for many years but I've always found it worth the effort. Good luck! The problem with the National Archives is If you don't know the regiment and company of your enlisted person, you will get the first folder in the file with that name. If there are 20 folders with the same name, you will keep getting the wrong one until you finally get to the right person. With only a name for the person pulling the file, they don't have anymore information to go on. With the military regiment and company infor, they will look in each folder till they find the right person.(hopefully) The more information you can give the archives, the better the chance of getting the right file the first time. There is a website by the National Park Service http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.htm where you could possibly find the information you need to get the correct folder the first time.
