Hi Stacey, we just missed you at RoseHill! My sisters and I spent some of friday morning and afternoon there looking for Harps. We had elected to cool off and have lunch and then go to the library to see if they had a map which they did of sorts. Did you have a map or are you photographing section by section? It isn't an easy cemetery to look through and we found several stones turned over and one of ours John Greenberry Harp overgrown with a bush. It is fair game to trim the bushes back or do you have to get permission? Sorry you had such an unpleasant experience reaching Union Cemetery in Morgan Township. I tried to find it back in the 1980s while on a one-day visit and finally gave up ... maybe I was lucky (grin). A more adventurous cousin later found the cemetery and snapped a few photos of the Bright and Wood markers in our ancestral line. Your "marble orchard" adventures in Decatur County would make an interesting booklet to be sold at the museum and/or tourist stops in Leon and Lineville. Thanks for all your efforts to help us preserve our heritage. Rick Albright, Merced, CA
In my last post, I said I'd tell about a very interesting headstone in Union Cemetery: Fleetwood Dau Of E. & J. OHarra Died Mar. 14, 1884 Aged 11ys 1m 10ds Below this it says: Was taken sick Wednesday morning at 10 oclock, died Friday morning at 4 oclock. Her remains were borne to the grave by her school mates, Grace Bolan, Nora Biggs, Corra Biggs, Etta Dillon, Rosa McDowld, Lucy Barr, her last words was BE HAPPY MA.
It was hotter than a 'fire cracker' when I headed for Decatur County the other day.. I wanted to stop at the Chastain Cemetery and get photos - so I put my 'hog boots' in the trunk of my car, armed myself with my trusty map (uh, huh...) water, and everything else on my visiting cemeteries 'LIST'.. You might remember that I wanted to go to the cemetery a few months ago, and Mr. Yoder said the cow lot you have to walk thru wouldn't be dried out until August. It was dried out o.k. -- and smelling really good after a few days without rain. There are a number of headstones that have fallen over and it hadn't been mowed for a while. I headed on to find Union Cemetery, Morgan Township. Should have spent a little extra time on the map, as I got completely turned around and went a few miles out of my way.. Ended up in Lineville and a couple of guys drew a little map to show me the area it was in.. So, I headed back and on to County Road J66. I followed the map and was still lost and frustrated; talked to a fellow in a log home, who told me I hadn't gone far enough. . . so I continued on.. I turned on the gravel road that the map showed and drove a ways (too far)... So, I stopped at a house where a little boy was playing in the yard and I asked him to find his Mom or Dad so I could talk to them... His mom came out and she said she knew where the cemetery was, as she had gone with her dad, Mike Andrew, to mow it and the others in Morgan Township when she was younger. Wow, I was tickled.. She said she would drive to it and I could follow her -- so that's what we did. Now, for the "rest of the story" as Paul Harvey used to say. There is no sign on the road for Union Cemetery, so if you didn't have a clue where it is, you'd never get to see it. You have to drive into Rex Stutz' drive; thru the side yard and on back on a short dirt road to get to the cemetery. They have planted a field of sweet corn, which you have to drive around. When we got out of our cars, here came Mr. Stutz on his 4-wheeler, having a hissy fit' that we hadn't stopped and cleared it with him to go back there. Then his wife came on another 4-wheeler and was even more 'verbal' about it. I explained that I was just there to take pics of the headstones and would be on my way. Apparently there has been a 'feud' of some kind between Mr. Stutz and the lady who showed me how to get there. They don't want people driving back there and complained that we drove too fast (WHICH WE DID NOT). So, the lady left and I proceeded to get to the picture taking -- and it was so hot, all I did was sweat... Then came the Sheriff's Deputy - who was friendly - to tell me about the 'feud' that had been brewing since Mr. Stutz had bought the property that should have had access to the cemetery. Then Mr. Stutz came back on his 4-wheeler and was quite friendly to me -- and said I should stop for a glass of lemonade (YEAH RIGHT!!) and shook my hand. while the Sheriff's Deputy was still there. Wish I'd had my blue "Garden Queen" hat with the feathers, on, with my bright pink Iowa T-shirt --- I'd have just claimed to be "stupid"........ I have to say that I'm very glad this is the last 'out of the way' cemetery I have to find. This wasn't a pleasant experience and doesn't look like it s going to change any time soon. The trustees have wanted to put the Union Cemetery sign on the road, but Mr. Stutz wants to be a 'land baron' and control, control, control.... The Sheriff's Deputy said the original plat shows a 'trail' going back to the cemetery, but the sweet corn patch is planted there now. When the Law is on his side - what happens then? I thought there was open access to all Decatur County cemeteries; even when you have to cross someone's land to get there.. Who knows!! There is a very interesting headstone that I will tell about in another email... As Always, Nancee

Amen, Sherry! I enjoy reading the postings, but have little time to follow-up on the research myself. Thanks to all who not only do the research, but are so willing to share the information with all of us! Besides most of the ones listed below, I'm also interested in Butcher, Cozad, and Evans. While driving through Nebraska earlier this week, I noticed a town on I-80 named "Cozad." Does anyone have any info about it's origins? We just returned about two hours ago to our homes in MO, but I thought I'd try to look into this week. Had never heard of the name until I began doing a little research a few years ago for my family name of "Gore." Received this post on the Coordinators List. I know many of you have been discussing this very issue regarding some of our Decatur County and Crawford County Cemeteries. Date: Fri, 9 Jul 2010 19:15:02 EDT Subject: New Rootsweb Mailing List - CEMETERIES-HISTORIC-PRESERVATION My cousin David Reed, the List Adminstrator for _Maine@rootsweb, _ (mailto:Maine@rootsweb, ) _New-Eng-Gen@rootsweb_ (mailto:New-Eng-Gen@rootsweb) ) and I have had many online conversations about how sad it is to see old historic cemeteries fall into disrepair and neglect. We have done a lot of research on what can be done to preserve these places that have such significant genealogical value. We decided to ask Rootsweb to establish a new list that covers historic preservation of cemeteries. There are Rootsweb lists that answer queries about cemeteries in specific states, but nothing that covered methods of preserving and restoring cemeteries. If asked whether we have all the answers, of course the answer is "no", but hopefully, we can find answers through the sharing of information, and resources. This is the description of the group that David and I have created, although Rootsweb had to shorten it a bit to fit the space they have available: "Discussion and sharing of information by individuals interested in saving local history and culture through the preservation of historic cemeteries that may be the only remnant of information regarding early settlements and the pioneers who link us to past history and genealogical information. Discussions shall include: Preservation of historical information about cemeteries, identification of groups interested in historical cemetery preservation, research techniques on how to locate historic and abandoned cemeteries, methods to photograph historical tombstones, research documentation suggestions, computer databases for organizing databases for organizing research, potential funding grants (USA), the safeguarding and distribution of transcription records and hopefully, the creation of new groups with a commitment to cemetery preservation and the preservation of local history and culture in areas where none exist. Queries regarding specific ancestors and local cemeteries should be referred to: _http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/other/Cemeteries/_ (http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/other/Cemeteries/) _ Although a single Administrator must be named for a given Rootsweb online list, David Reed and I will share the responsibilities equally. As of today, the list is "open for business". To make it easy, if you will send me a PRIVATE e-mail at _Scrapcat2@aol.com_ (mailto:Scrapcat2@aol.com) _ and tell me whether you want the digest version of individual messages, I can press some buttons behind-the-scenes to make it easy for you to join. Or you can join through the regular sign-up method.

Had a great trip to the museum today! Stopped at Rose Hill Cemetery in Lamoni first and took pictures until my memory card was full. Still only a small part of the cemetery. Will have to go back with more memory cards and upload to my laptop as I go. Stopped at the Welcome Center and Amish Country Store before we left for Leon. We spent 4 hours at the museum and I didn't even make a dent in looking at the new records. Tax Lists from 1873, 1874, 1875 and 1897 were at the top of my list. Piles and piles of school records - attendance and examination records. Some ledgers of payments from school treasurers to board members, etc. Lots of years of info for many townships and individual schools. They are working on great projects like a list of people at the County Poor Farm with additional info on each of them. Very interesting stuff! I spent the whole time at the one section of shelves. Didn't even get to anything else. If only I could live there for a month or so! Oh well. I will make one more trip this summer if I can. Sharon Becker came by and it was great to meet her and get a chance to chat. Great to finally meet you cousin!!! I recommend that everyone doing research in Decatur County make a stop in Leon at the museum. There are endless pictures, record books, etc., etc. It's great and the lighting and work space improvements are great! Stacey Dietiker
