    1. DEATH OF ORIN HAZEN WOODS
    2. Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert
    3. The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa Thursday, October 31, 1907 ORIN HAZEN WOODS, eldest son of L.N. and AUGUSTA WOODS was born in this neighborhood Dec. 3, 1869, and grew to manhood on the farm, receiving a common school education in the district school. From 1888 to 1892 he was a student in Simpson College, where by close application he soon became recognized as one of the thinkers of the institution, receiving the honors for the best oration, which entitled him to represent the school in the State Oratorial Contest held at Grinnell, in 1892. A year later he taught school in Utah, then made a voyage to the North Seas. He was appointed Principal of the Woodburn High School in 1896, going to Wyoming, in l897, he was appointed U.S. Court Commissioner and worked at surveying when not engaged in the duties of his office. On May 7, 1901, he was united in marriage to MISS OLA M. MARTIN, of Woodburn, and at once returned to Basin, to resume the duties of his office. He resigned his position as U.S. Commissioner in 1902 to enter the George Washington University at Washington, D.C., and graduated in law June 1, 1905, the fifth in a class of three hundred students. Returning to Wyoming, he at once began to practice law at Basin, where he proved his ability by an almost phenominal success as a lawyer and man of affairs, having in two years built up a large law practice besides being interested in a number of business enterprises. On October 1, 1907, he was taken sick with typhoid fever and Oct. 20 passed to the Great Beyond where with loving hearts chastened, and bereft by this Providence, we confide him to a loving Father until that glad morning when faith lost in sight, we shall know that which now we cannot understand. To the bereaved wife and to little CARL HAZEN, their only child and to the father, four brothers and one sister, the hearts of the entire community go out in sympathy in this hour of sorrow for the loss of a loving husband, father, son and brother, while all who knew him share in their sorrow in feelings of personal loss of a friend, an exemplary citizen and a true and upright man. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Copied by Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert January 9, 2005 iggy29@rnetinc.net

    2. Hello Diana (and other interested researchers), I too have the Riddle/Beaver/Rayn folks in my file. Most info is from the book sited by Gayle. My hubby, Larry, is 2nd cousin, 4X removed from Barbara Ann Beavers Rayn. Barbara Ann Riddle was also a 2nd cousin, 4X removed. She married James K. "Grimes" Beavers (he was also a 2nd cousin, 4X removed). James was 1st cousin to your Barbara Ann Beavers. Yes - it all gets very confusing in Decatur County. Lots of cross-overs. 3. The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa Thursday, September 19, 1907 Several of the parties from this city and vicinity who attended the Barnum & Bailey circus at Chariton on Tuesday of last week will long remember their outing, for it cost them considerable money, the result of the work of some smooth pickpockets. WADE LINDSEY was the heaviest loser, as his pocketbook was taken early Wednesday morning in a crowd at the depot where he was waiting for a train to come home. He lost $80.00 in cash and several checks but payment was stopped on the checks. MAC COX, of Eden Township, had his purse taken which contained $8.00. MR. COX was quite fortunate in not losing more for just before starting for Chariton he decided to deposit $90 in the bank at Leon which he had been carrying in his purse. WALTER CAMPBELL, also of Eden Township, had his gold watch and $10 taken. Rather expensive circus for those who suffered. -- LEON REPORTER. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Copied by Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert January 5, 2005 iggy29@rnetinc.net

    2. Hello List: I have gone back to some old emails of mine, and on 7/31/2002 at 10:20:31 Am, a Lady by the name of "Nadine Allen" emailed me and said that she had found our "Kier" name on the IA-DECATU-L@rootsweb.com Website. She wanted to know if we were related to Dwight Gordon Kier, who was a Band Director at the Frederick, Colorado School for some time. She was his Piano Accompanist there. I wrote her back on 7/32/2002 at 11:02:20 Am at the email address of "Oldcntymusic" that she had at that time, but I never received an answer from her. We are related to Dwight. Would anyone know of a "new email address" for her??? Was she or would she have been a possible subscriber to your Website??? I hope that someone can help me with a "Good email address" for her. Thank you kindly in advance for any help from anyone, Shirley

    1. BUSTED AN EARLY TRUST.
    2. Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert
    3. The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa Thursday, September 12, 1907 At the Old Settlers meeting at Derby, last week, PROF. RIGGLE acted as Marshall of the day. JOSEPH PARKINS attended the reunion of the 34th regiment at Grand River on the first day, but was present, Friday, and enlivened the occasion with his experiences. In his talk A.J. IRWIN eulogized the honesty of the first settlers, and said that locks and keys were things unknown and unnecessary. The only think they took which they did not hold title to was timber and that was a religious necessity and he honored them for being able to look out for themselves. In the first settling of that part of the country the land sharks got in and cornered all the timber and left none for improvement and fire wood. The sharks wouldn't file on prairie land at all but decided to form a timber trust. It was then that many of the settlers went in and busted the trust and in after years the sharks came out to view their possessions of barren hills and bald knobs they felt as badly as did John D. Rockafellow (sic) when a fine of twenty-nine million dollars was taxed up against him. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In another column of the same date: Talk about doing things! Last week the 34th Regiment of Iowa Volunteers held its reunion at Grand River, a small town of about 400, and they put up the best entertainment the regiment had ever enjoyed on a similar occasion. Everybody took a hand and each individual was a committee of one to see that it was a success. $800 was contributed by individuals for incidental expenses, and the stand privileges netted about $200 more. At least $1,000 was expended to show a local welcome to the veterans. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Copied by Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert January 3, 2005 iggy29@rnetinc.net

    1. Death of Sarah E. (Bulson) Bradley ~ daughter Minnie G.
    2. Hello all, This is message number 17453 at the LEE genforum board, posted by Carol Beattie-Selbiger. Deborah To any who are searching for information on Minnie G. Bradley Lea, the above meantioned article is correct in all it information except the spelling of LEE. . . The correct spelling is LEA. Minnie's husband was Reginald Nichols Lea from Morristown New Jersey. They had one daughter, Blanche G. Lea Combee who was born and raised in their house in what was then Caldwell New Jersey (now Fairfield). I grew up in that house. Blanche Lea is my grandmother. I am currently researching the Bulson family name as well as the Henlein or Hainline name as they married into the Bulson line with Frederick Bulson and Mary Deverre (DeVary) Hainline in 1850. If anyone has information on Frederick Bulsons family from Otsego,New York, please write me. Leon Reporter, Leon, Iowa Thursday, March l5, l923 SARAH E. BULSON, daughter of FREDERICK and MARY D. BULSON, was born near Victoria, Knox County, Ill., April 5, l85l, and departed this life March 3, l923, at the M.E. Hospital, Des Moines, Iowa, aged 7l years, l0 months and 28 days. She grew to womanhood at the old home and on August 2, l875, was married to OLIVER C. BRADLEY, at Rock Island, Illinois. To this union there were born six children, EDITH M. SPURRIER, of Killimore, Sask., Canada; MINNIE G. LEE, Caldwell, N.J.; MABEL V. THARP, Davis City, Iowa; MARY E. STOFT, Philadelphia, Pa.; BLANCHE ALLEN, Kellerton, Iowa; and ARTHUR C. BRADLEY, of Schaller, Iowa. All are living and with the exception of one daughter, MARY STOFT, were at the bedside when she passed into the larger life. She leaves to mourn her absence the six children, one brother and two sisters, ten grandchildren and the husband, who after almost fifty years of companionship here, is left to join her in that eternal home where there will be no parting. After their marriage, they lived in Illinois until l88l, when they moved to Davis City, Iowa, where they lived for about five years. They returned to Illinois, living there about five years when they moved back to Iowa, where they since resided, living in Kellerton for the last twenty years. She united with the Christian Church in l9l2, and by her true and beautiful life won many friends who are left to mourn her loss. She was a true mother and wife and by her constant devotion to her family, she thus leaves a monument more durable than marble or stone that will live in the hearts and finally be enscrolled in the Book of Life. Funeral services were conducted at the house by the Pastor of the Christian Church. Interment in the Mapel Row Cemetery. --Kellerton Globe. Deborah I have more on Eugene and Elizabeth Read on my website. http://fp1.antelecom.net/vredenb/vredenburgh_database/pafg22.htm#727 Or write me at lands@cybersurfers.net Larry Vredenburgh Leon Reporter, Leon, Iowa Thursday, September 1, l904 At the home of the bride's mother, MRS. HORACE BROWN, near Pleasanton, on Sunday, August 28, was solemnized the marriage of her youngest daughter, MISS MARY ELIZABETH READ and DR. NORMAN E. VREDENBURG, of Omaha, the ceremony being performed at high noon by Rev. Bingaman, Pastor of the Davis City M.E. Church, in the presence of about 35 guests. The bride is a well known Leon girl, born and raised here, a graduate of the Leon High School, who after completing her education in the public schools took up the study of music, in which she has met with marked success. For the past four years she has been a student at the New England Conservatory of Music at Boston, from which she graduated a few months ago, standing close to the head of a large class. She is a refined and educated young lady who will make a fitting companion through life for the man who has won her. The groom, while a stranger to our readers, comes from a highly respected family of Omaha, and during his short visits here has created a very favorable impression with all who have met him. He is now located at Moorhead, Iowa, where he is a practicing dentist with a lucrative practice. After the ceremony an elaborate wedding repast was served and the happy young couple drove to Davis City where they took the afternoon train for Omaha, where the parents of the groom tendered them a large reception on Tuesday evening. Many costly and useful presents received testified to the love and esteem of the friends of this worthy young couple, who start in life under most auspicious circumstances, with the best wishes of a host of friends who trust their voyage through life may be a pleasant one. DR. and MRS. VREDENBURG will be at home at Moorhead, Iowa, after October lst. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ -- Copied by Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert June 27, 2003 http://www.rootsweb.com/~iadecatu

The only words I can remember my mother singing is...False Lampkins Good A Mason that ever laid stone, oh He built the Lords Castle and the Lord paid him none, Oh he built it without and he built it within and H built a false window for Himself to peek in. The other song I can only remember this part: :Onedark and stormy night not a star was in site and all the passengers had gone to bed ,excepting one man with a babe in his arms who sat with a bowed down head." I have searched and searched for these on the net but no luck. You all are so good at finding things. I Had Come Down The Chimney With Presents To Give, And To See Just Who In This Home Did Live. I Looked All About, A Strange Sight I Did See, No Tinsel, No Presents, Not Even A Tree. No Stocking By Mantle, Just Boots Filled With Sand, On The Wall Hung Pictures Of Far Distant Lands. With Medals And Badges, Awards Of All Kinds, A Sober Thought Came Through My Mind. For This House Was Different, It Was Dark And Dreary, I Found The Home Of A Soldier, Once I Could See Clearly. The Soldier Lay Sleeping, Silent, Alone, Curled Up On The Floor In This One Bedroom Home. The Face Was So Gentle, The Room In Such Disorder, Not How I Pictured A United States Soldier. Was This The Hero Of Whom I'd Just Read? Curled Up On A Poncho, The Floor For A Bed? I Realized The Families That I Saw This Night, Owed Their Lives To These Soldiers Who Were Willing To Fight. Soon Round The World, The Children Would Play, And Grownups Would Celebrate A Bright Christmas Day. They All Enjoyed Freedom Each Month Of The Year, Because Of The Soldiers, Like The One Lying Here. I Couldn't Help Wonder How Many Lay Alone, On A Cold Christmas Eve In A Land Far From Home. The Very Thought Brought A Tear To My Eye, I Dropped To My Knees And Started To Cry. The Soldier Awakened And I Heard A Rough Voice, "Santa Don't Cry, This Life Is My Choice; I Fight For Freedom, I Don't Ask For More, My Life Is My God, My Country, My Corps." The Soldier Rolled Over And Drifted To Sleep, I Couldn't Control It, I Continued To Weep. I Kept Watch For Hours, So Silent And Still And We Both Shivered >From The Cold Night's Chill. I Didn't Want To Leave On That Cold, Dark, Night, This Guardian Of Honor So Willing To Fight. Then The Soldier Rolled Over, With A Voice Soft And Pure, Whispered, "Carry On Santa, It's Christmas Day, All Is Secure." One Look At My Watch, And I Knew He Was Right. "Merry Christmas My Friend, And To All A Good Night." This poem was written by a Marine (Name Unkown) stationed in Okinawa, Japan. ________________________________________ PeoplePC Online A better way to Internet http://www.peoplepc.com --WebTV-Mail-31591-90--
