Hi Everyone - I've had a few emails come through with these questions and I just want to clarify how this works for you all so that maybe there won't be so much confusion. I hope this helps you guys! I've run across some confusion about the Decatur County, Iowa Rootsweb Mailing List vs. the Decatur County, Iowa IAGENWEB Website. Just for clarification, the mailing list and the website ARE NOT connected. The Website is a part of the IOWAGENWEB Project and the mailing list is run by Rootsweb. When you change your email address on the mailing list by unsubscribing and subscribing under the new email address, IT WILL NOT automatically change your email address on the Website. To change your email address on the Website, you need to send me an email at _Momdit@aol.com_ (mailto:Momdit@aol.com) and let me know that your email address has changed and the Surnames you are listed under and also anywhere else on the Website that you might be listed, such as the Lookups or Photos Pages. The names that I have listed on the last email are those that are on the Surnames Listings but are not working. They are coming back to me with the message that they are unknown by the service provider (i.e. AOL, MSN, Earthlink, etc.). Since we can't send the person an email to connect with them on the surname they have listed I am going to remove the email addresses that no longer are working after I try every avenue I have to find them. By sending the list to our mailing list I'm hoping to be able to find a few of these people's new email addresses and by doing that, hoping that they won't have to be removed from the Surnames Lists. I hope that helps to clarify this a little bit for all of you! Thanks for your help! Stacey Dietiker momdit@aol.com Decatur Co IA List Administrator Decatur Co IA Website Coordinator
I was wondering if someone could help me out with finding further information on this family line? Perhaps obiutary lookups would be fine or census lookup. It would greatly be appreciated. I'm only halfway through the B Surnames List and I already have quite a list of unknown user emails. Please check to see if your name is listed here or if you know any of these people. Thanks so much for the very good response to my last email about changing your email addresses on the surnames lists! Wow! I've just completed changing and adding all of the listings received up to today - 2/19/05. There are several new Surnames so check them out! I've just sent out test messages to those on the A Surnames Listings. If you receive a test email just delete it. I'm only looking for emails that bounce back to me with a "user unknown" message. I will try not to send a message for every name you have listed but I may miss a few. If I do, my apologies in advance! So many names listed it's hard to remember but I'm making a list and checking it twice! Thanks so much for your help with this! It will help to clean out those email addresses that no longer work. Just a little reminder before I check out the email addresses on our Surnames Lists. If you have changed your email address in the last six months please check your listing(s) on the Surnames Lists for Decatur County, Iowa at _www.rootsweb.com/~iadecatu/surnames/Surnames1.html_ (http://www.rootsweb.com/~iadecatu/surnames/Surnames1.html) . I will be testing the addresses starting next week. If an email no longer exists it will be removed. Thank you for your attention to this matter! I am steadily working away at the transcription of the WPA Cemetery records. As soon as I figure out how I want to arrange the pages on the website I will start putting the information online. It will be arranged alphabetically. I will send an email when any of it is ready for your perusal. Some of the Surnames Lists have been updated today with a few new Surnames. Decatur Folks, A few may be interested in a Supreme Court Case of MO vs. IA ,165 US 118, where the State Line was in dispute. It focuses on the line running between the border town of Pleasanton and the border town of Lineville. There was a survey done in 1850 and then a court case in 1897. It also includes the words "a witnessed stone at the corner common to Wayne and Decatur counties, Iowa.". http://caselaw.lp.findlaw.com/scripts/getcase.pl?court=us&vol=165&invol=1 18 U.S. Supreme Court, Missouri vs. Iowa, 165 U.S. 118 (1897) I found it difficult to wade through the legal words and the survey terms, and I think most of the several names may be outsiders, however my gr-gr-grandfather FUGATE was the surveyor mentioned. He became the Mercer Co Surveyor in 1850. There was also a STOKES fence mentioned. Perhaps someone else with a background for reading things like that could fish out any other likely Decatur Co. names in that document. Elaine
Hello, Doing some transcribing for Jefferson County, Iowa and this piece was part of it. I have more on the Van Nostrand family that I transcribed if anyone is interested. There are other families also from Jefferson County included. The piece below did not say it was a "Portrait and Biographical Album" of Jefferson County, Iowa. Page 473, Portrait & Biographical Album, Pub. 1890. JOHN VAN NOSTRAND was born 1 Sept. 1800 in Westmoreland County, Penn. In Ashland County, Ohio, he married MISS. ELIZA GRIBBEN, native of Penn., but of Irish descent, her parents having been born in Ireland. His death occurred on the 6th of April 1859 after an eight-years' residence in Iowa. His wife was called home about three years previous, dying in November 1855, at the age of 54 years. They had four sons and three daughters, but only three are now living: WILLIAM, a resident farmer of Decatur County, Iowa; AMANDA, wife of JOHN BIRKHIMER, whose home is in Fremont County, Iowa; CLARK VAN NOSTRAND, Sec. 18, Buchanan Twp., Jefferson Co., was born in Ashland County, Ohio, Jan. 12, 1831; married, 23 April 1859, MISS SARAH WHITING. Their children: EMMA, married BENJAMIN L. GOSSICK, farmer of Buchanan Township; ANDREW B., Colorado; and LEWIS W. at home. Deborah
Thanks Staci for your work and for the information! One of my first genealogy searches in the early 1970's was in Decatur Co IA. It was wonderful to have those WPA Cem Records! In fact, they showed old tombstones for my great-grandparents (William A. and Minerva Ellen Riddle Curry) that my grandmother later replaced. There was more information on the old ones so I appreciated that discovery! Gayle in Kansas
Just wanted to let you all in on some new information coming out soon to both the Decatur County, Iowa website and the Iowa Genweb Website which includes Iowa as a whole. Several volunteers are working on transcribing the WPA (Works Progress Administration) Cemetery Records completed back in the 1940's for all of the counties for which it exists in Iowa. I am transcribing Decatur County and will be posting it to the Decatur County website as well as the Iowa Genweb WPA project page. These records are not extremely accurate by any means as often they were not obtained by actual survey of the cemetery but through court and county records, including information where there often were no stones to correspond. These records were typed on a manual typewriter and I can attest that the Decatur County section has some quite a few typos. Since it's a transcription I can't take the liberty of correcting those typos but I have tried to correct the name of the cemetery in parenthesis as often as I can. There are over 155 pages included in the Decatur County section and I have almost completed the "C" Surnames. I will begin posting these to the website soon. To read a very good explanation of the records and the project in general go to the following link: _http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ia/wpa.htm_ (http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ia/wpa.htm) And since I have your attention - There are many other special projects going on in the Iowa Genweb as a whole. Many of which you can contribute to on your own. Of course there is the wonderful Iowa Gravestones Project which is a wonderful way to not only find your Iowa ancestors but to also obtain and share photos of stones. You can find this project at: _www.iowagravestones.org_ (http://www.iowagravestones.org/) Another great project just getting off the ground is the Iowa Family Group Sheets project where you can submit your Family Group Sheets and search for others researching your Surnames. You can find this project at: _http://www.rootsweb.com/~iafgs/_ (http://www.rootsweb.com/~iafgs/) One of the newest projects is the Iowa Old Press Project. This is a project where you can submit and read transcriptions from old Iowa newspapers. This project can be found at: _http://iowaoldpress.com/_ (http://iowaoldpress.com/) These are just a few of my favorites. Other special projects can be found at _www.Iagenweb.org_ (http://www.iagenweb.org/) including Civil War Project, Orphan Train Riders Project, Iowa History Project, Iowa State Census project. When you reach the page, scroll down just a little and the special projects are listed on the left hand side of the page.
