Seeing the GORE family members listed reminds me that Elaine recently found a picture of CLARA GORE -- she was a grandmother, wife of HENRY TURPEN. (I'll be happy to forward to any requesting.) Until this picture we had none of either grandparent so this was a GREAT FIND. Now, we'll keep our fingers crossed that HENRY will surface. Since he was still living in 1935 or so I think our chances might be good. The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa Thursday, June 18, 1908 ALFRED BRANNAMAN, in a cottage near the Burlington depot in Chariton, took carbolic acid, on Tuesday, and when found in his room, life was extinct. He conducted a restaurant on what is known as the Levee, and said he would go to bed and sleep as he was up much of the time the previous night. This was about 1 o'clock in the afternoon and his little daughter went into his room about 7 o'clock in the evening and was horrified to find him dead. The alarm was given and others entered. He was lying in his bed as though asleep except the glassy stare in his eyes and his hands clenched across his breast. The odor of carbolic acid told the story. Drs. Dave Storie and Thede Stanton examined him and said that he had been dead for several hours. BRANNAMAN was a man slightly over 40 years of age and had a wife and four children. Several weeks ago they came here from Leon and purchased the Crips restaurant, paying part cash and giving a mortgage, secured on building for the balance. The business has not been good but that perhaps had nothing to do with his final act. It seems that he and wife did not get along well together -- in fact they quarreled much of the time and a few weeks since she began suit against him, through Attorneys Drake and Campbell, for divorce -- though living along together as before. Which was to blame is unknown to the public, but she spoke very bitterly of him and he seemed downcast and broken spirited. He left letters explaining his reasons for killing himself and charged in one of them that she was untrue to him. She said that his folks wanted him to take two of the children and leave him and let her go with the other two. Several here were acquainted with him in Decatur County and say that he was a good man and at one time owned a large farm but moved to town and lost about everything. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Copied by Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert March 2, 2005 iggy29@rnetinc.net http://www.rootsweb.com/~ialucas/Main.htm

Hello Freda Strampe I have lost some of my email addresses-please contact me if you would. I received a new scanner for Christmas and have some Shuck correspondence I would like for you to have for your files. Donna in OR
Hi All. Well, I got my pictures back from Leon. Some of the pictures were overexposed or something, so part of them didn't turn out as well as I had hoped. I "played" with those, and switched them to black and white, in hopes of getting a better picture. I also have a "before the fire" picture that I took a couple months ago (don't really know why I took that picture, but a good thing I did.) (My wonderful mother-in-law said "well why didn't you take a picture of*'just* the building, when you took that first one." If I would have known...) Anyway, the reason I am sending this e-mail to the list is because when I asked who wanted to see the pictures, I got several responses back. If you all don't mind, instead of e-mailing them to you, I will have Stacey put them up on the website ( http://www.rootsweb.com/~iadecatu/ ) I imagine when Stacey gets them up, she will let us know the direct link? If you would rather me e-mail you all of the pictures, send me another e-mail. (If you send me another e-mail asking for the pictures, let me know you have already read this e-mail~that way I will know if you are responding to this e-mail or to the first one that I sent saying I would e-mail.) Stacy
The "A's" are online! Here is the direct link to the Decatur County, Iowa WPA records that have been transcribed. The A Surnames are up this morning and B through E will be later today. Enjoy! Stacey _http://iowawpagraves.com/index.php?cid=27_ (http://iowawpagraves.com/index.php?cid=27)
This was posted to all county coordinators and to the Iowa-L list. This is a wonderful project. Decatur County, Iowa transcription is in process now. A through E should be up on this website very soon. Stacey We are pleased to introduce a new exciting tool for the IAGenWeb Project and, most importantly, for those of you researching ancestors in Iowa. Most everyone is familiar with the WPA Grave Registration Survey that was completed in the late 1930s in more than seventy of Iowas 99 counties. This large database, though it contains some errors and omissions, is one of genealogys greatest resources for early burials containing information on many gravestones that don't even exist today. The Iowa WPA Gravestone Registration Survey Online database, when completed, will blend every Iowa county into a single database and, like all IAGenWeb project resources, will provide **free access** to that data. It will be searchable by county, or by a state-wide search. Soundex features have been built into it as well. See: http://iowaWPAgraves.com We already have 20 counties loaded in the database, in full or in part, and more on the way. If we were to reach 100% of the available counties, we estimate the total records could total upwards of a million burials. We still have some finishing touches to do to the web site but we wanted to invite you to take a look and get acquainted with its features. There's lots of work to be done getting the data transcribed. We'll need dozens and dozens of volunteers, perhaps several from a county teaming up in some cases. If you would be interested in helping, please see the "Volunteer" section on the web site for further details. This is GREAT!! Found the ACTON (my ever elusive) LISTED with the click of one key. Would love to know how these ACTON'S connect. Hopefully, one day, someone will be able to answer whether or not WILLIAM ACTON, 1805-1881 was actually the brother of POLLY ACTON KIZZIRE! It would be great to hear from anyone that's "lined-up" any of these Acton family members. I'm guessing my "missing link" will be found in one of the TURPEN/HAMILTON connections, but I've not yet found it. The way this site builds and connects, I'm sure it's only a matter of time until I do. I would like to have the pictures of the fire. Thank You. Marie
There was a young family that lived in the apartment just North of Hamilton's business that lost everything. Mother, daughter and son. The little boys lost his dog in the fire and the daughter lost her cat. Lost their pets plus everything else. Mom and Dad are divorced but the family is staying out to Dad's place now. Loretta
I picked up on this Leon fire late and cannot pull up the video. Is there someone who can recap it for me? I have a dear friend who grew up in Leon who would like to hear more about it and if those are pictures you could e-mail to me, I would be very appreciative. I would put the info up on our Dorsey family site too. Jane Dorsey -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. I couldn't get the video to work so if you still take those pictures, I'd appreciate a copy. My cousin, who is recovering from the flu, knew Kathy Hamilton and her Mother. Said she'd just started a Christian book store in the building. But she got her old dog, Wrinkles, out of the fire. She said if she hadn't managed to get him out, she didn't think she could survive.
