from grandmother West's scrapbook Feb. 13, 1936 Journal-Reporter Barry West Marie Deemer, 13, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Deemer, who live thirteen miles southwest of here, was badly frozen Saturday afternoon when she attempted to return home from a neighbor's home a mile distant. Marie had spent Friday night with school friends at a neighbor's home. She was force to stop at the home of Charles Gibbons which was two-thirds of her way home. First aid had to be administered as she was nearly exhausted from wading in the deep drifts and suffering from frozen arms, face and feet. After she had rested for a few hours she resumed her trek home. Although her arms, face and feet were badly frozen and swollen, the blisters are healing nicely now.

A Narrative History of The People of Iowa Volume IV 1931 SPENCER H. AMOS was one of the veteran and honored members of the bar of Decatur County at the time of his death, which occurred June 22, 1923. Here he had been continuously established in the practice of his profession at Garden Grove during a period of nearly half a century, and he not only achieved success and prestige in his profession but was also known and valued as a sterling citizen of marked loyalty and public spirit. Mr. Amos was born in Ohio, February 2, 1850, and thus was seventy-three years of age at the time of his death. He was a son of William and Elizabeth (Bramble) Amos, and was a child when the family came to Iowa and established residence on a farm in Wayne County, his parents having passed the remainder of their lives in this state. Mr. Amos received the advantages of the Iowa public schools and also those of higher educational institutions of this state. He gave effective service a number of years as a teacher in the public schools, and in the meanwhile he initiated the study of law. He made rapid advancement in the absorption and assimilation of the science of jurisprudence, was in due course admitted to the Iowa bar, and from 1877 until his death he was engaged in the practice of law at Garden Grove, where he long controlled a substantial and representative law business that indicated popular appreciation of his professional ability and also his secure place in the confidence and esteem of the community. He was for many years a director and the attorney for the Garden Grove Bank, and for a time was editor and publisher of the Garden Grove Express. Mr. Amos was a stalwart and well fortified advocate and supporter of the cause of the Republican party, was an earnest member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, as is also his widow, and was influential in the Iowa circles of the Masonic fraternity, in which he was a Knight Templar and a Noble of the Mystic Shrine. He was one of the old and honored members of the Decatur County Bar Association at the time of his death, and held membership also in the Iowa State Bar Association. In Decatur County was solemnized the marriage of Mr. Amos to Miss Josephine Amos, who was born in Virginia, she having been a child when her parents, Albert and Caroline Amos, established their home in Iowa. Mrs. Amos received excellent educational advantages and prior to her marriage she had been a successful and popular teacher in the public schools of Iowa, Montana and Kansas. She was one of the organizers and charter members of the Garden Grove chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and served as its first worthy matron. She has continued influential in this branch of the Masonic fraternity and now resides in the Iowa Eastern Star Home at Boone. She has long been a gracious figure in church, cultural and social affairs in the Hawkeye State, and in her old home community at Garden Grove her circle of friends is limited only by that of her acquaintance. Florence, first born of the children of Mr. and Mrs. Amos, died in childhood. Daisy, the second child, is the wife of Robert G. Bennett, of Garden Grove, and they have four children: Mrs. Amy Rushing, of Rockford, Iowa; Miss Greta E., a popular teacher in the Marcus, Iowa, public schools; Lucille, a graduate nurse who is doing admirable service in her profession; and Roberta O., who remains at the parental home. The third daughter, Mrs. Nan E. Raleigh, resides in the City of Seattle, Washington, and she has one child, Eva G. http://www.iagenweb.org posted at this site with Debbie's permission

Hi all, I just got off of the phone with my father (who is 55 and has lived in the Decatur Co. area all of his life). After my maternal grandparents sold their land around the old Dekalb area, another "cemetery" was "found" by surveyers. It is suppost to be across the road from where the old school house sat and is in state hunting land now. Dad said he heard that there are gravestones, but who know what kind of condition they are in. I will be going home this Sunday, but my little sister is graduating from high school. I will be home for Memorial Day and Dad and I plan on donning on the Deep Woods Off, jeans, and hiking boots for the sake of history. Anyone interested in knowing more about this mysterious cemetery, please email me at cy_hick@yahoo.com. If I have time, I may be able to check out some other cemeteries in the area for anyone also. I am currently about 90 miles away at college, but I do go home often so I can scope out cemeteries for anyone if needed (provided that I have the time). I can take pictures, but would have to charge a small fee to reimburst my costs. I also have access to old census records via the Iowa State University library and I have the Weldon Centennial book (1880 to 1980), so I can do some research for you. Thanks and take care! I will venture into realm of "not minding my own business." Most computers (recent vintage) allow you to set/change time, month, etc. I do so by clicking onto START, CONTROL PANEL, DATE AND TIME. This takes you (me) to your (my) calendar and clock; then, set/change year, month, day, time, including "zone" time (PST. EST, etc). Also, some software allows an option to choose pre-setting automatic change when daylight savings starts/stops, and leap year. Note that when e-mail is forwarded, the original and succeeding forwards will retain their own forwarding date, and they will not change. As to Norton. I have used for years and have found Norton quality to exceed most virus protection software for "us small-time users" as compared to the "big-time pro user" software protection. (At a much less cost.). I cannot understand Norton changing your time. Some virus protection software will place time screened and certified "clean" prior to sending/forwarding, at the bottom of the transmitted e-mail. I keep my virus protection up-dated by using Norton's "Live Up-Date" almost daily. Actually, you can keep your original Anti Virus Protection indefinitely by paying the annual fee. However, all this does is keep your original version up-to-date, and you do not get the benefit of "new stuff." For example, Norton 2005 added much more in the worm protection area. Hope I have not up-set anyone!! There is a reason for this... I buy Norton Anti-virus for my computer, to keep my computer protected. BUT it expires 365 days after you install it, so I was going out every year and buying a new one to install. And I have found that when I buy the new one and install it as the other expires, for some reason it doesn't "take" (If for example, Norton was to expire tomorrow, and I go out and buy a new one and install it, it says that Norton will expire in one day. So, I just blew $30+ and my computer is no longer protected) but I have found that if, for example, Norton expires tomorrow, then I can set my computer clock back a year, and still be "safe" from viruses. Then NEXT year when it expires Norton WILL work on my computer. Don't have a clue as to why that is. Aren't computers wonderful? So, every other year I buy Norton, and the other year I have to "live in the past". I am sorry for the inconveniences, but I don't know of another way to do it so that my computer is virus protected. (Someone once mentioned that I could buy it on line...but using a credit card on line is not 100% safe~I have a story about that too~I went on line to a "very secure site" and spent about $20. (This was the ONLY time this credit card was ever used) Then about 2-3 months later I got a bill in the mail saying that I was in Paris and used the credit card 3 times to buy books, a surf board and another couple items. ) Wow, Paris! Which was kind of interesting, since I have never even been close to an ocean, let alone fly over one. The "good thing" was that when these items were purchased, the surf board was purchased on our anniversary. :-) I dont know if they ever caught the surfing-bookreader, but I do know that the credit card company fixed the problem. So, I no longer trust any website~even if they are "very secure") Gotta love computers! Any ideas how I can keep Norton and my date correct? Speaking of computers -- my Mother who is nearly 83, thinks they are evil... Sherry, I got a 'kick' out of your remark about your grandmother doing 8 loads of clothes, etc.. None of our ancestors would give these new-fangled computers any of their precious time.. Too much to do. Admittedly, it has been a great tool for finding ancestor information and communicating with others at the touch of a button.. Thanks for the humor. You can click on your "time" in lower right hand corner and it opens the "DATE AND TIME" properties. Then just click the year up to 2005. As for renewing Norton online, I wouldn't recommend it anyway.......I tried once, they took my money but I never got the update and couldn't reach them by phone. I contacted my credit card company and they took the charge off. Good luck! Hey Stacy---For whatever reason, MY e-mail program recognized your mailing in the current year. Notice--> Date: 5/17/2005 10:31:09 AM. I had dropped a note to Clif regarding this, then wondered why, going THRU the IADECATU site, it wouldn't automatically be updated. Looks like it just depends on the computer. Regarding what our grand-parents would think....I'll just bet mine would prefer washing 8 loads of clothes on a washboard to trying to "communicate" through a machine that KNOWS it's smarter than you are. :-) -Sherry > [Original Message] > From: Stacy Smith <slsmith@grm.net> > To: <IADECATU-L@rootsweb.com> > Date: 5/17/2005 10:31:09 AM > Subject: Re: [IADECATU] Grandmother West's scrapbook > > Hi Clif > My clock time is correct, but the date is a year off. Stacy, Is the clock set right on your computer. When you send an email to the list, it posts as a last year's message. Basically embedded way down in my messages. I see that it's "snuck" in deep and I suspect spyware or some such. Have a good day. Clif Hinds --- Stacy Smith <slsmith@grm.net> wrote: > You said "this was implemented after 9/11." from grandmother West's scrapbook Barry West Leon Journal-Reporter July 19, 1945 Weldon Farmer Injured Monday by a Cultivator Raymond Spencer Knocked Down by Tractor Dragged by Cultivator; in Hospital Raymond Spencer, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Spencer who live south of Weldon was badly injured at 5:00 p.m. Monday when a tractor knocked him down, ran over him and the cultivator attached to the tractor dragged him several feet. The farm youth was attempting to start the tractor when the accident occurred. The tractor had stalled and he jumped off the machine to start it. As he cranked the tractor the machine started moving as it was in gear. The tractor knocked him down and ran over his left arm. The cultivator dragged him for quite a distance before he was able to free himself. Although the tractor wheel with lugs had badly lacerated his body and he had suffered bruises he jumped up and turned the switch off on the tractor stopping it before it reached a deep ditch just a few feet ahead. Spencer was able by stopping to rest a few times to walk one-fourth mile to the house. He was taken to the Decatur County hospital for treatment.
