I think they use to call the four corners over east of Leon at the Humeston, Corydon corner on Highway 2. It was a 4 way road and that is the corner where 4 of us kids in high school in the 40s had our wreck. I doubt if this is the one that you are inquiring about, MOM ----- Original Message ----- I also found a four corners up near Osceola (sp). Barry
Will someone tell me where the Overton School was located. It must have been in Clarke County........I haven't heard of it before. Then, where was Four Corners? from Irma Overton

I wonder if this could be the Dr, Reid from Davis city or the Dr Reid DO. from Eagleville at that time (Bethany later) I kind of think the Dr, Reid from Davis City was dead by this time. These articles have certaintly touched a lot of people, note from Mom, if anyone knows the above, email me.
I want to thank everyone who responded to my plea for someone to photograph my 3rd great grandfathers gravestone; Levi Sherman James of C company, 11th Iowa Union infantry, at Palestine Cemetery. A special thanks to Irma Overton, Tracie McBroom & her father, Betty Wallace, Bob Bixby, Cleone, Mac (rmclure). Your volunteering spirits mean a lot to me, especially having folks willing to photograph a broken old gravestone of a civil war vet on Memorial day weekend, your willingness, its inspiring! God bless all of you! Thank you! James Wallace 630 S. Main St. Columbus, Wisconsin
sending twice as not seeing it go through from grandmother West's scrapbook Barry West from the Journal-Reporter Feb. 13, 1936 (This article mentions some relatives of mine from Van Wert) Patt Fulton or anyone know if C. M. West is a son of Isaac West? We wish to make a correction in the last issue of the Four Corner news. The item read: Mrs. C. M. West received a letter from her uncle, George McConnell of Snyder, Colorado, dated Nov. 22. It should have read Jan. 22, instead. Well, fold, who said that the ground hog didn,t see his shadow. Anyhow it is snowing to beat the band this Monday Morning. Mrs. Sam Carpenter and son Leland visited Wednesday in the Clinton Carpenter home. Van Wert callers Saturday were Will Lewis, C. M. West, and son, Aaron Fry, Stewart Glen, Mr. and Mrs. Will DeVore and family. Sunday dinner guests in the Stewart Glen home were Mr. and Mrs. Sam Carpenter and Mr. and Mrs. C. M. West and sons. This community was deeply grieved to hear of the passing of Dr. Tallman of Van Wert, on Saturday morning, Feb. 1. We extend our sympathy to the bereaved wife and relatives. Feb. 3rd found that Overton school had not been closed during the severe weather. We are looking forward to some new pupils the first of March. We are having a blizzard this Saturday morning. Don't look as though we would get out until in the spring. Our mail carrier is still having to go on foot and carrying the mail. Everett Brown has been delivering the mail on this route. On Feb. 1 it being Stewart Glen's birthday, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Carpenter and son Leland, Mr. and Mrs. C. M. West and sons, Dale Dewain and Laver all went in for a surprise on him and, was he surprised, is only putting it mildly. The evening was spent in visiting and listening to the radio. At a late hour ice cream and cake were served. All departed for their homes after midnight wishing Stewart many more happy birthdays. Laver West spent Saturday night with Mr. and Mrs. Stewart Glen. The men folk in this neighborhood are kept real busy gathering up the wood to keep the home fires burning. Well, thanks Weldon, for giving us a tip on feeding the little birds. We put out some beef. There are a few of the little snow birds that come up to eat, but the jay birds are boss. We have a nice bunch of quail that have been feeding in our corn crib all winter and also the pheasants come to the barn for feed. How's that for feeding the birds. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Fry and Oscar Reed were Van Wert callers Friday. Miss Phyllis Lewis got orders to close the Overton school on account of the drifted roads and the bad weather. We are still on the job and trying not to shirk with the news, but as the roads are full out here and they have been unable to do any shoveling to get them open since the big snow. We are doing our best and so is the mail man who is walking and carrying the mail to deliver it out this way.
B. R. West and Decatur Detectives, > the last issue of the Four Corner news. What are the Four Corners? I mean, not the newspaper, but what 4 towns, borders, or areas coming together? Learning a lot, Elaine

Wanted to write and tell you all that I spent Memorial Day in and around Leon and went to 4 different cemetaries where my relatives are buried. The most interesting aspect was that James Wallace who lives in Wisc. had ask for someone to photograph his 3rd gr grandfather's stone in Palestine Cemetary. It just so happens that I always go to Palestine and told him I would try to locate the stone. My first attempt to find it was not successful. Then, I remembered that Lois Slade in Leon had mapped and listed the stones in all cemetaries in Decatur County. So I called and ask her help in finding this particular stone. She looked in her records and told me exactly where to find the stone, so then I went back to the cemetary and found it immediately. I was excited that I found it and took pictures which I will send to James later. I always go to Franklin cemetary where grandparents, George and Phoebe Scott are buried and also gr grandpa Stephen Scott. While in that vicinity we went to the little Cobville county park just north of the cemetary a short distance. It was named for Lewis Cob I believe who lived in that area. It is a nice little park with a shelter house and outdoor grill and a very pretty, peaceful place. Also went to the Hamilton cemetary in Pleasanton where all of the Overtons are buried. Was told by Steve Puckett that this cemetary was named for his grgr grandparents, so that was interesting. My husband, Willard Overton, and my parents Steve and Sada Scott are buried in the Leon Cemetary. It was so beautiful there with all of the US flags waving along the road into the cemetary. Maybe some others will have something to write about how they spent Memorial Day this year. from Irma O

The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa Thursday, March 18, 1909 MRS. MARY HAWK died at her residence, 709 East Linden Ave., on Saturday, March 13, at 4:00 a.m. of pneumonia. Her illness was of but few days duration. MARY GABRIEL was born in Muskingum County, Ohio, on Sept. 7, 1825. In early womanhood she married ISAAC HAWK and lived there until in 1870, with her husband and family she moved to Lucas County, Iowa, settling in Benton Township. Seventeen years ago death claimed her husband, and she and her devoted daughter, MISS CIDNA, removed to Chariton and have ever since lived in the little home where she breathed her last on earth. Seven years ago she met with a terrible affliction in the loss of her sight, and in all these years of darkness no word of complaint or repining at her sad lot crossed her lips, but rather it was no unusual thing to hear her sweet aged voice raised in songs of praise. It can truthfully he said that she had not an enemy in the world, and all who knew her can testify that she has been a lesson in patience to all who came in touch with the sweetness of her life. At the age of fifteen she united with the M.E. Church and has always been a loyal Christian woman. Sister HAWK was ever true to what she deemed to be right, she was a devoted wife, a loving mother, a true friend. She leaves to mourn her loss a half sister and half brother, seven children, twenty-one grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. But they sorrow not as those who have no hope; she was ready and waiting for the change, and could sing as she looked into the grave and beyond it: "We shall sleep but not forever, There will be a glorious dawn; We shall meet to part, no never, On the resurrection morn." The children who today mourn the loss of a good mother are: MR. G.W. HAWK, Berdan, California; MRS. ELIZA WAGONER, Des Moines, Ia.; MRS. ELIZABETH SPRAGG, Sonora, Ohio; MRS. MARTHA DOUGLASS, MRS. SUSAN SCOTT, MISS CIDNA HAWK, Chariton; and MRS. EVA ARNOLD, Garden Grove, Iowa. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Copied by Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert May 30, 2005 iggy29@rnetinc.net
The contact person for Oak Hill Cemetery was (and possibly still is) Monte Baker; 641-773-5292; RR, Grand River, IA 50108. You could call him and find out.. Hope this helps.. Nancee ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Marie Sellers Hollinger I got your email off the Grand River, Iowa site. I hope you can help me. We have found the marked grave of my ggg grandmother Rachel Blair Vance in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Stanley plot. I am trying to get permission to place a small DAR emblem in front of her tombstone and I need to get permission from the owner/authority of the Oak Hill Cemetery to come onto the cemetery and place the emblem. Also, a short ritual will be made by descendants (I am at least one of them). Could you possibly know/find if this cemetery is private/public. Who would have authority to sign a letter stating permission is granted. It takes a long time to go through the process but I am anxious to mark my Rachel's grave with a DAR recognition as a daughter of John Blair, a Revolutionary War Soldier. Thank you.
