    1. Father of Leon Farmer is Dead Mar 18, 1943
    2. Leon Journal-Reporter found in grandmother West's scrapbook Barry West Last Civil War Veteran at Council Bluffs Was Ninety-Seven ___________________________________________ Sylvester Ellis Flummer, 97, the last surviving Civil War veteran of Pottawattamie county, died at his home in council Bluffs March 10 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Bessie Grosvenor. He was the father of William Flummer of Morgan Center. Mr. Flummer left Tuesday of last week to see his father. Funeral services were held Saturday at Council Bluffs with interment in the Cedar Lawn cemetery. Miss Josephine Flummer, Albert Flummer and Mrs. Gerald Perkins of near Leon, attended the funeral services of their grandfather. Mr. Flummer is a past commander and for four years had been the sole surviving member of Abe Lincoln post No. 29, G. A. R. at one time one of the largest G. A. R. posts in the west. "My Civil War experiences were very unusual due to the fact that I was never in an active battle," he related at a birthday party held in his honor attended by more than 500 people September 19, 1940, in the national guard armory at Council Bluffs. He was on the march during the first six months of his service, most of the time with General Sherman. In his second enlistment of three years service he helped hold fort at Gallatin and Chattanooga, Tennessee. Because of improper food, Mr. Flummer's health was impaired. With his health growing worse, he and others who were ill were left practically uncarred for at Cumberland Gap, Tennessee. Ill, discouraged and homesick, Mr. Flummer left one day, walking and struggling, and arrived at a government post four days later, where a Mr. and Mrs. Ballard nursed him back to health in the attic of their log cabin. Mr. Flummer leaves another daughter, Mrs. Cora Hailey, Rea, Missouri. He is survived by ten grandchildren including Pfc. Will S. Flummer of Leon, now in action with the United States Forces in North Africa.

    1. Throckmorton
    2. Jean Belzer
    3. Hello Everybody, Is there any chance that there is a record of Wilson Throckmorton, (b in Ohio and came to Terre Haute, IA with his wife Emily and children Minnie, Sadie, Rose, Belle and Elmer) a preacher of M.E. faith, of his marriages, funerals, etc.? I suspicion that he married his daughter Minnie J. to Thomas Chasey but can't find any record of it around 1870. Thomas Chasey and Minnie Throckmorton's first child was Charles Chasey born 30 September 1871. According to Wilson's obit he came from Clarke County and was ordained in the M.P. Church in 1868 so he would of been a preacher to marry his daughter Minnie and Thomas Chasey. Thanking you in advance, Jean Smile And The World Smiles Too.

    2. Leon journal-Reporter March 18, 1943 Found in grandmother West's Scrapbook Barry West Bullet Broke glass in Both Doors of Fred Lysinger car Friday Night A stray bullet barely missed Mr. and Mrs. Fred Lysinger of Lamoni in the south part of that city on Highway 69 Sunday at 9:00 p.m. Mr. and Mrs. Lysinger were riding in their car enroute north toward their home when a bullet entered through the right hand glass within six inches of Mr. Lysinger head and went through the glass of the left door, also just missing Mrs. Lysinger's head. Glass was shattered for both doors in their laps. Although Deputy Sheriff John A. Fulton investigated the mysterious shot, so far, it has not been learned whether the bullet was fired from a gun in the hands of a boy, or whether is was of accidentally by an adult.

The balcony overlooked Graceland college's court at Lamoni. Hoffman, suffering from a torn muscle incurred while officiating at the Graceland-Centerville junior college game last week, refused to let the injury hamper him. Supplied with a megaphone and aided by Graceland's assistant coach, Walden, who handled the ball on the floor, Mr. Hoffman very efficiently refereed the remaining quarter of the game.

    2. found in grandmother West's scrapbook Barry West Former Leon People in Tornado When the tornado ripped across Ruskin Heights shopping center, 12 miles from downtown Kansas City, Mo., Monday night 38 were killed and over 200 injured. In the group injured was former Leon People. The daughter of Mrs. Anna Dingman of Leon and her little daughter are in a hospital recovering from injuries suffered in the tornado. Mrs. Dingman departed Tuesday morning to be with her daughter and family. The fate of the daughter of a Leon couple, Mrs. R. E. smith, 24, who lived at 10722 Newton Avenue, which was only a block from where the big shopping was flattened in the storm, is not known. Mrs. Smith, nee Miss Barbara Cooper, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. August T. Cooper of Leon, has not been heard from, or her husband and their two little children, a girl, 2 1/2 years old, and another girl, 1 year old. Mrs. Smith expects another child in September. Mr. and Mrs. Cooper attempted to telephone Kansas City, trying to find out if their daughter and family were injured or killed. The Red Cross was notified but Mr. and Mrs. Cooper, hearing nothing about their daughter and family, departed for Kansas City at noon Tuesday. When the Leon Journal-Reporter went to press yesterday afternoon the Coopers had not returned and no message was received here by relatives. (additional note- There was no basement in the home of the Smiths. I have only the first page and this article goes on about the sister of Chet Cartwright on page 4) *Does anyone have any follow up on the people mentioned above

    1. ALBAUGH DIARIES
    2. Passing this on as I know some of you are researching this surname. Stacey I just received a message from a Phil Smith who recently bought four old diaries of D. W. Albaugh. They date from 1900-1903. Phil is searching for a descendant to whom he can give the diaries. In the process of hunting for Albaugh families, he found the IAGenWeb Family Group Sheet for John Albaugh and Adelaide Reed (http://www.rootsweb.com/~iafgs/albaughj.txt), and is virtually certain the diaries are those of their son Daniel W. Albaugh (1876-1904). Daniel was born in Linn County and is buried in Monroe Township, Linn County. He married Flora Miller in 1903. Phil wrote to the person who submitted the FGS ("rayswork"), but hasn't received a reply. I'd like to help him and see that the diaries are returned to the family or placed somewhere safe and appropriate. If any of you recognize the names above, please let me know. Thank you!
